Amazon.com Review

How many dimensions do you live in? Three? Maybe that's all your commonsense sense perception perceives, but there is growing and compelling evidence to suggest that we actually live in a universe of ten real dimensions. Kaku has written an extraordinarily lucid and thought-provoking exploration of the theoretical and empirical bases of a ten-dimensional universe and even goes so far as to discuss possible practical implications--such as being able to escape the collapse of the universe. Yikes. Highly Recommended.

The first book-length exploration of the most exciting development in modern physics, the theory of 10-dimensional space. The theory of hyperspace, which Michio Kaku pioneered, may be the leading candidate for the Theory of Everything that Einstein spent the remaining years of his life searching for.

I’ve read a few of Michio Kaku’s books and I’ve really enjoyed them, which is why I decided to read this somewhat “older” book. Dr. Kaku is an excellent popularizer with a lucid and down to earth writing style and he has a modest and open minded way of approaching a subject. As the book is a little bit outdated at this point and because I have a couple of objections I rated it four stars, but it is a very “mind opening” book that I strongly recommend. The book takes us on a journey through the discovery-history of higher dimensions and the quest to unify the laws of physics. It introduces us to Riemannian geometry and explains how forces can be viewed as consequences of geometry in higher dimensions (Hyperspace) a concept that was later used in the General Theory of Relativity, Kaluza-Klein theory as well superstring theory. The laws of physics become more unified, simpler and more beautiful if you add a few dimensions. He convincingly makes the case that you can discover the secrets of the Universe by peering into Hyperspace. The book also discusses topics such as the history of modern physics, relativity, quantum physics, the standard model, GUTs, super gravity, black holes, the big bang, parallel universes, etc. Towards the end of the book he is discussing the fate of the Universe and the fate of human civilization, and the threats we face from the potential of nuclear war, global warming, and possible collisions with asteroids. The book does not go into depth on any of the multiple topics discussed. It is not that kind of a book. However, on some minor topics I found it to be misleading, particularly on the topics of parallel universes and “Schrödinger’s cat”. For example, he states on page 261 “To Schrödinger, the idea of thinking about cats that are neither dead nor alive was the height of absurdity, yet nevertheless the experimental confirmation of quantum mechanics forces us to this conclusion.” The last part is simply incorrect. This is an interpretation issue, not an experimental issue, and it is sorted out in different ways by more modern interpretations of quantum physics such as the ensemble interpretation and the relational interpretation of quantum physics, or via "decoherence". As for me, when I as a young student taking classes in Quantum Physics at the end of the 1980’s I adopted what was essentially a pre-cursor to the relational interpretation because of what I noticed when I tried to perform Galileo transforms on quantum wave functions. There’s no real contradiction and there are no multiple worlds (universes) needed to explain this. I’ve seen other popularizers confuse people the same way, and I think it just turns people off.Anyway, other than the above minor complaint, I think this was a very enjoyable and interesting book that I am very glad that I’ve read.

It is hard to criticize much of the work which is conversational and lucid. And yet, there are substantial problems here. The author, a respected major scientist, is far from neutral here and is rather dismissive of the fact that there is no available method by which to prove the String Theory which he devotes a good part of the book to defending. It is true that the presumed 10 dimension model supports many different areas within Physics. Yet, consistency in giving the correct answer is insufficient to prove a theory. Newton's Laws worked well until Maxwell and later Einstein questioned the Principia's absolute standing. The Universe of Ptolmey in most ways, or the Geometry of Euclid were absolutes of their time. With few easy contenders, String Theory is definitely worthwhile, but the author has not chosen to show any scruples about it.Whether from the standpoint of increasing the interst of a segment of readers or not, the author also choses to digress to references to Star Trek and other Science Fiction a bit more than this reviewer feels to have been relevant. Some of the references may be seen as useful and others verge on fantasy, if not crossing well beyond the boundary.Scenarios of differing types of cultures, from our present 0 to I, II or III seem generally a bit optimistic in speculative nature at the least. The Earth and Universe might be doomed. Perhaps this is even in the purview of Physics, but projected escape measures would seem to reflect poor editing on top of some manic flight of fancy. At one point a human culture is perhaps to move through a wormhole to a fresh Universe.[I am sure that we can mess up the Universe there much less than we have here!]What I cannot fathom is whether we can transfer enough animal and plant matter with us to make some feasible ecology. What is it that we are to eat? What is it that we are to do for fabrics, for pets, for handling wastes. Perhaps as a type II or Type III civilization we have passed the need for pets or clothing or provision of Oxygen. Perhaps we can use the energy of a local Black hole emissions or some other astral energy, but what of petrochemicals for clothing materials (synthetics) or plastics. Are we to assume that culture can survive on a few Billion 'ready to eat' meals that have been brought along, if we have no ability to grow sufficient crops or herds of animals? Are we to live long as cannibals instead? And are we as such an advanced culture to thrive as a single species? Transporting a Biome to a different planet or Universe would entail logistics that have not really been addressed with any thought here or elsewhere and discussion of such fancies is so far 'over the top' as to have produced a cackle or two from me in the reading of this book.

#85,201 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Fascinating. I've been trying to read some non-fiction that deals with big events that I vaguely remember from my childhood or teenage years. I remember seeing snippets of news coverage regarding Ruby Ridge and then explanations of it as I got older. And I know that this event motivated Timothy McVeigh to carry out the Oklahoma City bombing due to the fact that he saw the government encroachment on private citizens as abhorrent and unacceptable. This book is all you really need in my opinion to get a clear picture of what took place on a secluded mountain ridge in northern Idaho. This is a case where all parties were at fault in some measure and the result was death and disaster. Excellent account and very well-written for those who want to know more about this event in our history.

I never realized that the incident at Waco involving Koresh & the Branch Davidians occurred during the criminal trial against Randy Weaver. On the fifth day of Weaver’s trial, the judge actually had to instruct the jury to disregard publicity about the Waco case. I certainly recall these incidents but details like this are one reason why this book was so readable. I think the author was very even-handed with a story that lends itself to lopsided views – either anti-government or anti-white separatist. The author is skeptical of many decisions that were made at the time of the arrest and trial, but he avoids most value judgments. The story (and the cast of characters) is interesting enough without injecting his own opinion. Well done. There is a photo insert towards the end. Once again (I’ve complained before to no avail) there is no mention of photos in the table of contents.

Walter has written one of the most detailed accounts of our Ruby Ridge Massacre as is out here. Everyone who reads this account will be held to the pages turning one after another unwilling to stop reading until the last page where most of us will breathe deeply, sigh, and shed a tear for each person murdered that day especially for Sammy, a boy of early teen years. Certainly I will read anything Walter has written about any topic, since I know the text will be adequately documented and written so well as to keep me reading marveling at how great it feels to read beautiful writing. His account of the shooting is among the best writing I have read.Walter is less focused on the courtroom details. Probably a good idea since most readers could not follow legal intricacies anyway. Clear enough summary though to understand the agents of ATF, U. S. Marshals, and FBI thug behavior. And clear enough to understand prosecutors' function has devolved into a function of deceit, abuse, and outright illegalities. Accountability absent to reign in actions of prosecutors, which has become essentially legalized thug behavior. I learned that the Judge of the case, on a spectrum, mirrors extremism that he accuses the Weavers of being. This Judge in his position as a Judge did not function in accordance with our Constitution that established the Judiciary branch of our government. This Judge functioned based upon his hate toward those with whom he disagreed. And he violently disagreed with Randy and Vicki Weaver. If the leaders and agents of FBI were held accountable for destroying evidence, withholding vital evidence, refusing to act legally, telling and spreading lies, and abuse of power, then each one of these goons would be charged with a felony. Then charged with murder. The sniper included. This guy should have been tried for murder.Walter's Ruby Ridge should be taught in every high school class of American History, Government, and Literature in America; of course, I know it will not be taught much less read by too many high school students. If I were still teaching, I would trace a particular history from the Constitutional debate about the various notions of the role of a federal government through to the present. Two books must be at the top of the list for study: Orwell's Nineteen Eighty Four (1949) and Walter's Ruby Ridge (1995). I am speaking about "thought control", Orwell's term. For the time period of our modern American history, I will use Foucault's notion of power and the exercise of power through the absolute management of discourse. As an overlay to these two texts, one fiction the other nonfiction, Foucault's notions describes how easily duped are federal government agents. In other words, well meaning American people working as agents in ATF, U.S. Marshals, and FBI from within their profound ignorance of basic Constitutional principles become brainwashed self-righteous, and violent crusaders of their own peculiar mind-set far outside human reason. Once duped, these federal agents fail to understand that they are wrong and they will even use snipers to murder those who disagree with them. This federal agent mind-set threatens our American way of life established by the principles of our Constitution in a far greater sense than do these crazies who believe in white separatism, white supremacists, or, in fact, in other kind of pure race claim including Zionist Jewish belief that they are chosen as the pure race of God - notice these purists and their actions in America and in the Middle East region. Our Constitution establishes equality. Let's try to maintain this principle and hold accountable these out of control federal agents. When we sane and decent Americans prosecute leaders, for instance, Freeh, Reno, and others, we will see less of this insanely illegal behavior.Walter's Ruby Ridge should be in every family household.

My opinion of the book and author nose dived when he attributed feelings and thoughts into the heads of William Denton and Vicky Weaver, both of whom were killed. You want to pass something off as real then don't engage in a creative writing exercise with dead people's emotions. We do not know what Bill and Vicky thought or felt during their final hours.I believe during the mission the Marshalls acted in a cowardly and pathetic manner. It was not their greatest moment that is for certain.

Once I started this book, I could not put it down! It was distubing and sad on many levels. Poor decisions and intransigence on both sides. I recall this tragedy as it unfolded and appreciate the in-depth look provided by the author.

A good account of a sad and unnecessary event. Well written because it is sympathetic to no party, protecting neither the careless and vicious government agents, nor cowardly, racist and and weak-willed Randy, nor his foolish and self-deluded wife. A good study on how putting bad people together gives an ugly result.

It came! How’s this?Patrick Van Rosendaal’s book, BE NY, is a little gem in this great big city that can so easily become overwhelming, even for the native New Yorker. I love how he delivers his wisdom through the eyes of actual real New Yorkers of all different calibers living in the city, doing it their way. Each story pulls you into a stranger’s life and makes you feel as though you know them. I especially loved the sections with little tips from each of the interviewees and from Patrick himself, zooming in on the highlights of NYC thru the eyes of the people who live here. It is beyond a doubt the most innovative and interesting tourist book I’ve ever seen and a “should be staple” for every single NYC dweller as well!

Excellent guide to New York both for the seasoned New Yorker and those visiting for the first time. Lots of interesting tidbits and along with stories from several real New Yorkers and their favorite haunts. Highly recommended!

Best guide to NYC! !! Includes great tips, walking tour suggestions, etc. Leave your Loney Planet, your whatever guide, and go for this one!

What better way to get to know new places in New York than getting to know them through people that actually live, work and go out in New York. Be it your first time or refreshing your memories of your love for the city, the book provides you with the right suggestions for many different occasions.

I am obsessed with New York and I own several tour guiding books. This one is my favorite! I love how it is structured and the design is excellent. Definitely a must-have for locals and visitors, a lot of useful tips.

I have lived in NYC for 20 years and I have to admit that this book is really complete and hold some of NYC best kept secret.Trendy places, outlines itineraries, hidden spots, this guide can be used by tourists and New Yorkers.Highly recommended to those who want to experience New York like a New Yorker.

One needn’t be educated in the Greek classics to know that somewhere in this trilogy there is a man who gets intimate with his mom. However, the common conception of Oedipus —as in the Oedipal Complex—probably has more to do with Freud and Freudian psychoanalysis than it does with this story. The three plays of this trilogy are “Oedipus the King” [a.k.a. “Oedipus Rex” or “Oedipus Tyrannus”], “Oedipus at Colonus,” and “Antigone” [pronounced “an-tig-o-nee” rather than “anti-gone.”] Of the three plays, the first is the most well-known.In “Oedipus the King,” the titular character is facing a crisis in his kingdom. When the oracles are consulted about how the calamity might be brought to an end, Oedipus is told that he must banish the killer of his predecessor, i.e. the previous king of Thebes. Oedipus consults his own oracle to find out who the ne’er-do-well is who murdered the last king, and the fortune-teller tells Oedipus that he’ll never say who committed the killing —but acknowledges that he does know who it was. Oedipus mocks and threatens the oracle until the fortune-teller gets fed up and tells the king that it was he, Oedipus, who killed his predecessor. Oedipus doesn’t believe it at first, thinking it’s an attempt to facilitate a coup. Far ickier than the accusation of murder is the fact that —if true— it means that Oedipus has been getting busy with his own mother and has even sired children with her. Oedipus calls for an investigation. When a peasant who saw everything is called to testify, his story strikes Oedipus as disturbingly familiar. It turns out that Oedipus’s blood father (the previous king) had been told by his own oracle that his son would kill him and steal his wife, and so he had baby Oedipus sent away to die. Oedipus (who had been rescued from being staked up on a mountain) was coming through Thebes, not knowing it was his homeland, when he had a skirmish on the road with the man that he didn’t realize was both the king and his father. Later, Oedipus marries the queen (apparently there were no busts or portrait paintings of the last king anywhere) and becomes the king without knowing that the man he’d killed in self-defense was the last king / his father. When the truth revealed, everything goes south. The queen kills herself, and Oedipus’s response is almost as severe. Oedipus gouges out his own eyes and goes into exile. Antigone, one of Oedipus’s daughters, says she will be the ex-king’s guide, and because the old man is blind and not familiar with where he’s going, he doesn’t have much choice but to accept. In “Oedipus at Colonus,” Oedipus and Antigone arrive at neighborhood on the fringes of Athens, i.e. Colonus, and are planning to take up residency. The locals are welcoming until they find out the blind man is Oedipus. The story of the ex-king who killed his father and got it on with his mother has spread far and wide. The townspeople agree to call in their king, Theseus, and let him decide. Theseus decides to shelter the Thebean ex-king, being moved by his story of how Oedipus was unwittingly ruined and how the former king accepted his punishment when his offenses were brought to light. Theseus’s support becomes more complicated when Creon, a royal from Thebes, shows up and says they need Oedipus back because an oracle now says that the location of his burial will determine the outcome of a future conflict. Oedipus says no way, and Creon has Antigone and her sister (who joined them at Colonus to warn Oedipus) kidnapped. Theseus faces a serious challenge because now his actions might bring the city-state to war, let alone offending the gods. However, he sticks to his guns and rescues the daughters and agrees to personally oversee Oedipus’s burial (so that no one can grave-rob and move Oedipus’s body to a position that would create a more pleasing forecast from the oracles.)“Antigone” takes place after the death of Oedipus. The dutiful Antigone is now back in Thebes. When her brother Polyneices is killed and Creon orders that the prince not be buried, Antigone refuses to accept the decree. She steals the body and gives it a proper burial. Antigone was engaged to marry Creon’s son, Haemon, but Creon decrees that the woman will be imprisoned in a cave for disobedience of the king’s order. Haemon asks his father to be reasonable, but Creon will have none of it. Eventually, the words of an oracle convince Creon to change his mind, but he finds himself too late. Like Oedipus, various ruin then befalls Creon. While the details of the story may strain credulity in places, these works are powerful morality tales. The recurring theme is that one can’t make an end-run around fate by way of vice and neither can one otherwise manhandle events to achieve a desirable outcome. Oedipus’s father sends his son to be killed, but the outcome remains the same. Creon can’t plant Oedipus’s corpse where he pleases and neither can he deny a man proper burial. It’s almost a karmic tale. Perhaps, the path to pleasing the gods is through virtue, and not through finagling one’s way to compliance with forecasts.I find it fascinating how crucial a role is played by oracles throughout the three plays—and what that says about human nature. The fortune-tellers are always right and are always heeded. In a sense, this story tells one about humanity’s fear of uncertainty, what people are willing to do to allay that fear, and how the world is ultimately too complex for those attempts to work out. The law of unintended consequences remains ever present.I enjoyed these plays. They are brief, stirring, readable, and thought-provoking. I would recommend them for any reader—particularly those interested in the classics.

There’s a pattern with many of these Greek tragedies. Through the sad tales of cursed families, they illustrate the evolution of Western civilization. Fifth-century Athens was a light in the dark, a young democracy, and the Athenians used tragedy as a tool to preserve history, learn from it, and document their growth. With The Oresteia, we saw Aeschylus tackle the ideas of law and respect for the state, and Sophocles continues along those lines, but places the focus on another great philosophical problem–free will vs. fate.Though heady, the plays also had an entertainment value. The Spring festival celebrating Dionysus provided an opportunity for playwrights such as Sophocles to compete and put on a performance for thousands of spectators. Tragedies usually ran in the morning and the more lighthearted comedies toward the end of the day.Being tragedies, lighthearted these three Theban plays are not. They adhere to the Greek tradition of dramatizing the lives of a cursed family, but instead of the House of Atreus, we gain a jagged view of humanity’s affliction through the House of Oedipus. The first play, Antigone, is actually the last chronologically. Oedipus is dead, yet the curse continues. Thebes has defeated an onslaught of Argosian warriors, led by Polynices, the exiled son of Oedipus. He was killed, along with his brother, Eteocles. Antigone, daughter of Oedipus and sister of both Polynices and Eteocles, wants to bury the body of Polynices, but her uncle and Theban King, Creon, threatens anyone who does so with death. I think you can see where things are headed…Next comes Oedipus the King, the shining star of the three plays–the painting within the frame. Each piece has its own beauty, but we move back in time to that dreadful moment of discovery. It’s through Oedipus’ actions that we see an evolution in Greek theater. The plot builds perfectly according to Aristotle’s Poetics and is the cornerstone of many a modern story. Oedipus represents the everyman, marching forward, thinking destiny is within his control, only to discover that he is a mere puppet to fate.A plague has struck Thebes and the only solution is to bring the killer of Thebes’ last king, Laius, to justice. Through plot twists and turns, Oedipus dedicates himself to finding the killer, only to discover that he is the killer, and that he has fulfilled a prophecy which he has tried to avoid all of his life. The truth is too much. His wife and mother, Jocasta, kills herself, and Oedipus gouges out his eyes, his one act of defiant free will. Finally, we are presented with Oedipus at Colonus. Many years have passed and Oedipus has become a wanderer, guided by the loyal Antigone. He finds himself in the town of Colonus, just outside of Athens. The oracular prophecy makes its next move: Oedipus has arrived in the place where he must be buried. This play is an ode to Athens, and by being buried just outside the city, it will be protected for all time. Thus ends the Theban trilogy. Similar to my Aeschylus readings, I picked up the Robert Fagles translation. Sophocles’ writing flows easier and is less dense than that of Aeschylus, so if you had a tough time with The Oresteia, you may find Sophocles to be more in your wheelhouse. From Freud to soap operas, you’ll certainly begin to understand the many references to this bit of dramatic history.

If you are already familiar with the Oedipus Trilogy, this is a fantastic free digital edition. The formatting is easy to read, the text reads easily. My chief complaint with this copy is that there is no navigable table of contents to easily move from one play to the next. If you are completely new to the Oedipus series, do yourself a favor and read it out loud as you are reading it. It may sound silly, but plays are meant to be heard out loud and not read silently. Anyone having a hard time understanding the language will be greatly aided by the rhythms and sounds of the spoken word. Classical reading. Required reading for most high school/college literature classes.
