I am a parent that is design obsessed and have a bit of a chair collection and FINALLY there is a children's book that reflects our home/family in this unique interest. I suspect there are more of us out there. I am excited that my daughter will be able to read about some of the chairs in her nursery (Eames) and pieces we have in our home. It's never too early to teach the little ones about timeless and unique designs. I also love that this book features both designers and architects such as the late Zaha Hadid. Definitely 5 stars and I hope to see more of these types of books in the future. Buy it!

Super cute for those MCM loving parents. Also looks cute on book ledge in the play room.

Wonderful book, got one for each of the grandchildren. You’re never too young to start learning the important things in life!

Great book for children and adults! Graphics are wonderful. Very thick resistance paper.

So well done! I bought this for a client who just had a new baby. He and his wife love architecture. They said this was one of their favorite gifts. It is enjoyable for any age. Brilliant idea.

This was a gift for a friend's son. She's an interior designer and loved it so much she took it to her office to share with her coworkers. I may have to get her the whole series!

Super sweet book with great illustrations

Perfect for young architectural historians.

SuperMutant Magic Academy, by Jillian Tamaki

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up—This quirky solo work from Caldecott- and Printz-winning graphic novelist Tamaki collects strips from her long-running webcomic about a school for mutants and witches into one mostly cohesive anthology. Riffing off popular phenomena, such as Harry Potter and the X-Men, this title sets teen angst-y situations in a world populated with cat-eared prom queens, the Everlasting Boy, and superpowered jocks. Most of the strips are a page-long, with the exception of the never-before-seen 40-page story arc that concludes the series. While at times these snippets may confuse readers because of their brevity and often weighty existential themes, these snapshots often center on the same cast of characters, each of whom teens get to know more deeply by the book's end. The mostly black-and-white art is divided in a range of single, full-page to six panels, and rare bursts of color are deftly used to moving effect. Marsha, the misanthropic witch with a crush on her female best friend; Frances, the boundary-pushing artist; and Cheddar, the athlete trying to find the meaning of life, among others, stand out as the more fully developed protagonists, but readers will find bits of themselves in many of the realistic characters. Poking fun at the "Chosen One" mythos, Tamaki has created a stellar graphic novel that combines her slice-of-life expertise and clean, uncluttered art style. VERDICT A must-have volume reminiscent of Alan Moore's Watchmen (DC Comics, 1987) and her and Mariko Tamaki's This One Summer (First Second, 2014) in sensibility and Raina Telgemeier's works in appearance.—Shelley Diaz, School Library Journal

Review

“Tamaki's sense of comedy and pacing owes a lot to Charles Schulz's "Peanuts," although her subject matter is decidedly less innocent. And she delights in breaking her own rules: Her artwork is black-and-white except when she throws in impish splashes of color, drawn with broad, rough brush strokes except when it's composed of felt-tip scribbles or shimmering digital gray.” ―New York Times“SuperMutant Magic Academy... exudes an irresistible wit.” ―The Guardian“This collection is a great read for comic fans and genre newbies alike.” ―Bust Magazine“[SuperMutant Magic Academy] is smart, thoughtful, and too hilarious to gobble down in just one sitting.” ―Bitch Magazine“When it comes down to it, this is one of the best books... of any kind to come out in a long time.” ―Autostraddle“The humor [in SuperMutant Magic Academy] is sometimes slapstick, but more often it offers ultra-dry observations on modern disengagement. Tamaki is playful and loose with her art, unafraid to be experimental as she draws us into a world where true feelings are the greatest danger.” ―Publishers Weekly Starred Review“Though Tamaki's black and white panels shift from detailed and realistic to dreamy and atmospheric and back again, she consistently and expertly captures subtle emotion and subtext with only a few strokes of the pen. [SuperMutant Magic Academy is] simultaneously heartbreaking and hilarious.” ―Booklist Starred Review“SuperMutant Magic Academy will reassure teenagers that high school is a weird place, even for humans, and will remind adults that it is an experience we never really outgrow.” ―Winnipeg Free Press

Love Jillian Tamaki's work. Not as good as This One Summer or Skim - and it's not a single complete story but a series of short stories - but worth owning nonetheless.

Jillian Tamaki's SuperMutant Magic Academy is a collection of a gorgeous and gorgeously weird webcomic. Ostensibly the story of a group of super powered/magical/gifted teenagers at a boarding school, it's most described as a mash-up between Harry Potter and the X-Men, but really it's nothing like these. It's its own strange little thing.I love that you can tell it began as an excuse for Tamaki to just let loose on the page. Tamaki is known for her crisp and clean line art that she uses for her books, but the art in a lot of SuperMutant strips -- and especially in the early ones -- are rough, almost sloppy, as if they were done quickly and in the moment. It fits the throw-away nature of the humor. The art style starts to get tighter as the strip goes on, and the light gags begin give way to darker jokes and meditations. Tamaki never chooses to permanently stay in one form or the other, though, neither in terms of art or story -- they never stop fluctuating. This gives the comic a kind of fluidity that make the strips range from the relatively straightforward to the surreal and the somber -- more or less on a strip-by-strip basis.(My favorites of these are the ones featuring Everlasting Boy, her immortal, silent character, whose strips consist of what I can only call playful existentialism.)The strips are mostly self-contained, one-shot things, although the last few dozen that end the collection feature a poignant take on the Chosen One story that is so wonderfully and beautifully done that it borders on frustrating (it is so short). It's so good that it could have been expanded to it's own graphic novel. Maybe one day.

First off, I love overall the presentation of the book. It's in black and white but tells the story beautifully. The actual paper is thick and it's fun just to have a copy - and I say this as a primarily digital reader.I love that, until the end, each page is related but individual. It makes it digestible. That said, I still read it in one day because I was interested in know what happened to the characters. The mini-stories are like most comics, lessons contained within pop culture references. You'll relate to some, fist pumping the characters, while others you'll roll your eyes at because you totally know someone LIKE THAT.When the overall story ended, I was screaming I NEED AN EPILOGUE, which the author provided. Neat little bow tied up all pretty!

We bought this book based on Amazon’s reviews for our 12 year old grandson for Christmas. He read it in one day, and when we asked him how he liked it, he replied, OK, but he didn’t like the “F” words. His mother informed us later that there were story frames depicting frontal nudity and a suicide where one of the characters puts a gun to his head and pulls the trigger. In a day of increasing suicides, especially among teens, this is deplorable. Though some may find this book to be humorous and creative, we were offended by the vulgar language, inappropriate pictures, and violence shown in such a careless manner. If this book were a movie, it would be rated “R”. Certainly not a kids book. Amazon needs to put a disclaimer on their description of the contents of this book.

I used this book for an assignment in my MLIS program and I really enjoyed it. I liked the 'Sunday Comics' style and how the use of color was done with intent. I also really enjoyed the wit and realism in a book about supermutant teenagers. This is a great book for introducing graphic novels to girls (a vastly underused medium because "comics are for boys" which is such crap) and to encourage reading in those who don't enjoy it.Fair warning: there is some cursing so maybe wait until they're 12 or 13 to offer it.

Haven't splurged on graphic novels in like a decade. Review on NPR drew my attention and immediately it went to my wish list. Then I gifted it to myself for surviving my son's fourth grade year at school. Worth it. Poignant observations of life.

I read all of the comics on the website. Then I bought the book and read them all again, plus some extra fun goodies at the end. It is a magical world full of angst and more angst that Jillian Tamaki has created. I can't wait to see what she does with the series after this or what other projects she will work on but she is definitely someone to keep an eye on.

Although the art varies in quality depending on the time of the section presented, Tamaki offers a story and a quirky set of characters that engage consistently. The book contains the occasional bit of humor too.

I love this graphic novel. The art is fantastic, and Jillian Tamaki does a great job of writing high school students who are believably optimistic, cynical, and foul-mouthed. This is maybe the best book I read in 2015: it made me laugh, cry, and want to draw comics. Highly recommended for teens and fans of YA/graphic novels..

#702,187 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I am currently working on the Data Science professional program by Microsoft and am taking the Analyzing Big Data with Microsoft R for one of the course options (note: this book isn't required for the class--I just like having reference books that supplement what I'm learning). I've bought several R programming books but this is the first and so far, only, book I've been able to find about SQL Server Machine Learning Services with R.I've read through 5 chapters already and I wish I had it months ago when I was getting started programming in R because I had issues here and there with my machine set-up and the book covered some of the problems I had.If you're new to R programming and machine learning--I'd recommend reading other books that go more into detail about the specifics of the R language, data preparation, modeling, etc. This book doesn't go into the R programming language enough for someone new to the subject to get a handle of the kinds of objects in R, what you can and cannot do with each, etc. Nor does it go into the differences of the different types of regression, how to interpret data to determine features to include/not include in your model, etc.The book does a great job of going through everything in the machine learning process in a SQL Server environment from setup to deployment. I'm glad I've got it on my desk.

Many of the code examples in the book will not run. I'm using SQL Server 2017. Also, in almost all cases the author states the high level purpose of some code, presents the code, but gives little or no explanation of how the code works. I'm very disappointed.

I am one of the program managers who worked with the release of this feature in SQL Server. (I received a copy this book from the author in exchange for my honest opinion). This book does an excellent job at providing an end-to-end guide to SQL Server Machine Learning Services, covering the feature in the context of the full data science process. It targets the different roles involved in a successful deployment of a Machine Learning project and contains very useful content for each of those roles. The roles I am referring to are Data Scientist, data engineer and database administrator. Another thing that makes this book practically very useful is that the authors provide the code files covered per chapter. This makes this book a great training material for anyone who wants to thoroughly learn how to leverage R and Python in SQL Server.

I got this book for free for my honest review. I agree with other reviewers on the pros of this book. Unlike other general R books, this is specifically designed for SQL Server. The usage of this book is straightforward. The book is written in a smooth way in terms of context. This book is not beneficial for someone who wants to learn R or statistical learning. For example, the definition of NOVA is not given but how to use it is illustrated in the book in terms of coding as well as the result with sample data! However, I feel this is written in a hurry. There are lots of formatting issues that editor forgot to correct. Lots of figures have no title,... and the text and script of codes are brought together without proper spacing...

I am one of the Microsoft developers that contributed to some features described in this book (I got this book from the author, for free, but that doesn't have an effect on my review). Therefore, before reading this book, I didn’t expect to see much I didn't already know. However, I was pleasantly surprised. This book not only tells a complete story – which starts from basic things such as installation, user creation, permission setting and goes all the way to extended features such as Polybase – but also comes with a lot of practical examples that can be utilized in various scenarios. To me that’s the most valuable part, as I am not a data scientist (I did study R for my work but never solved any real problems with it) and I am happy to see that using our product people can do so many things with their data! The book also introduces functionalities from different Microsoft products which help the data scientists on machine learning/data mining tasks (some of them I only heard of and never used myself, and it is very helpful to see detailed instructions and screen shots). Following this book step by step, one can easily learn how to use all those tools and mine their data. I especially like the organization of the chapters – from basic to advanced, each chapter clearly defines prerequisites, provides instructions and examples and gives precise comments. IMHO this book is a good reference for people trying to create their data science solutions.

This is a great reference for those who work with Microsoft Machine learning server and SQL Server on a regular basis. It is all you need to know in one place. The writing style is very clear and concise, there are a lot of examples that are easily reproducible if you want to try them on your own.

Reading Mill at this particular moment in our history is to be reminded not only of the source of our most cherished ideals of liberty and political liberalism but also of the powerful logical and moral reasons supporting our idea of individual freedom and responsibility. Both the writing and the supporting arguments are models of clarity, intellectual modesty and common sense. What a sad contrast to the empty headed slaganeering of today's political and moral discourse.

John Stuart Mill is one of the giants of political/practical philosophy. This book is very densely written; you get a full page worth of reading on each page. The book was written in 1859. So the language is a bit more formal and strange compared to contemporary writings. But it's very readable. He explains the thought process behind his opinions. They're very logical. If be reading And think "Gee, never thought of it that way" Or "so that's why things are the way they are". And, for a book written 160 years ago, it is surprising my relevant.TheHighly recommended!!

A solid work that everyone should read, regardless of political alignment. How do we balance societal well being with personal liberty? In an ideal democracy, the will of the government becomes the will of the majority, so how do we protect the minority? Why are free speech and diversity (even eccentricity) so desirable in the first place? Mill has some ideas.Pros: One of the most practical pieces from the utilitarian thinkers of the era. Almost prescient on a number of matters (his genealogy of christian morality, proto-feminist thinking, religious diversity as including atheism).Cons: I don't think that Mill ever fully resolves the concept of social tyranny in this work, which he rightly gives serious thought. Additionally, there is some (unsurprising) apologia for imperialism, and his assumption that Parliament is, or will become shortly, the will of the people, seems a bit overly optimistic.Regardless of these quibbles, I think this is an important read for anyone interested in political philosophy.

Amazing insight into the human condition with regard to thought processes, how one's ego can convince the mind that it is the only acceptable opinion. Appearing to have been in print for over a hundred and fifty years the author had an incredible clarity in explaining how the body politic encouraged opposing views in that day and age. The purpose of which was to sound out the reasoning of each opinion. Today this man would be heckled off the stage or assaulted for disagreeing with the far left, if that were to be the case. A mind opener for sure

Mill was an atheist and decidedly anti-Christian, and I state this for those who need to take this into account before reading an essay on world view. Despite this fact, John Stuart Mill would be most displeased with how Christians and religious conservatives are being vilified these days. He is definitely NOT in favor of shutting down dissenting opinions or open discussions, and the book has some potent quotes that could be applied to today's "politically correct" shenanigans. He makes a very strong case against the type of soft tyranny we are seeing today with regard to prevailing opinions on controversial topics. He clearly states that protection from government tyranny is not enough; there is also the tyranny of popular opinion toward unpopular opinion, and that people should be protected from this as well. Timely and relevant. Warning: the book is short, but it is not an "easy read." Well worth it nonetheless.

I ihave read Mill's On Liberty three times now. The Bromwich and Kateb version is the most helpful, as we not only get to read Mill's essay, but 6 supplementary essays - two "introductions" and four sometimes critical "reinterpretations" by respected theorists.Milll's basic point is simple: people should be left free to think and do as they please unless what they are doing causes actual harm to others. Mill's essay is spent both giving reasons for this principle, and exlporing what the principle means in practice. He offers a plurality of reasons for his libertarian ideas, some utilitarian in nature and some based on (what some might call) natural law. Not only does freedom of action and thought encourage innnovation, keep public discussion vigorous, and lead to a more effective social network than government incursion, but people just-plain prefer directing their own lives to being directed from outside.Mill gets into sticky territory, however, when he talks about the libertarian principle in concrete terms, as his distinction between what is private and what is public is often less clear than he might want. Should persons be free to tell others to do harm to themselves? Yes. Should parents be free not to educate their children? No. Should "vice-merchants" like bars, gambling parlors, and pornographers be free to conduct business without heavy government regulation? No. Should people be free to marry a plurality of spouses? If mormon, yes. If British, no.My biggest criticism - and a criticism offered in Richard Posner and Jeane Bethke Elshtain's essays - is that Mill is all over the map when his principle is "put to the real world" because the distinction between public and private is just-plain fuzzy. Another interesting criticism, brought up in Elshtain's essay, is that Mill demonstrates a very unjustified bias in favor of experiment over tradition (where the former seems always presumed inferior to the latter). In short, I like Mill's essay but see it as an edifice built on not-quite-solid sand. Mill relies on seperate categories, public and private, that are just not clear and distinct enough to be distinct. (While Dewey may have gone too far in the "all acts are social" direction, I think Dewey hit closer to the truth.) This is why the six supplementary essays in this edition are a nice touch.

I have been stung by T. E. Lawrence's legend, myth and enigma ever since my Father bundled myself, Brother and Mother together explaining that he had just seen the newly opened film Lawrence of Arabia while on a business trip. That very next weekend we went down to Hollywood to see the three plus hour movie (I was bored to tears). Being surprised and seeing my Father's enthusiasm I began to read more about Lawrence and World War One and the Arab Revolt. I saw the film several more times over that year and began what has been a lifelong hobby as I have collected books, articles and research on LAWRENCE. So anytime there is a new Lawrence biography I am pleased in the expectation that others too will discover this unique, flawed and mysterious man. This month we have the release of Scott Anderson's new book LAWRENCE IN ARABIA which for some reason felt it important to replace the word OF with the word IN. And although I have some concerns with some of Anderson's characterizations and his depiction of Lawrence especially in his post war life I think the book is a tremendously good read that takes on a much broader scope than just being a Lawrence biography.Anderson gives us a broader picture of how the Arab Revolt and Lawrence's roll tied into other World War I campaigns. There is a good section on how Lawrence and others proposed early in the war that the British attack the Ottoman Empire (who controlled the Middle East) at Alexandretta (near Aleppo which is much in the news today). But instead Winston Chruchill and the British war planners attacked Gallipoli resulting and a lost opportunity and a crushing defeat. If Alexandretta had been captured and the Ottoman Empire split in two there may have been no need for an Arab revolt. The book tries to be a biography of Lawrence asking how did Lawrence do it (answer no one was looking) and three others: Curt Prufer a German spy who tries to get Arabs to attack the Suez Canal, Aaron Aaronsohn the Jewish Zionist who along with his sister set up pro-British spy ring in Palestine, and William Yale who working for Standard Oil traveled the Middle East. The problem with these three other individuals with the possible exception of Aaronsohn is that they are at best interesting footnotes except that they do help expand the readers understanding of people and events beyond the scope of the Lawrence story. And although I liked Anderson's structure I thought the Aaronsohn story was better told in Ronald Florence's 2007 book LAWRENCE AND AARONSOHN, T.E. Lawrence, Aaron Aaronshon, and the Seeds of the Arab-Israeli Conflict (Anderson quotes Florence in several of the Aaronshon sections). As to Prufer and Yale I don't recall ever hearing about them before this book.Anderson's book justifiably spends a lot of time discussing the Sykes/Picot treaty between Britain and France and the person of Mark Sykes who was a major political player and is a major character in the book. Much more so than even Aaronshon. His personal and political story really is what the book's subtitle is about.... Deceit... Imperial Folly... and the making of the modern Middle East. Add Sykes/Picot with the Balfour Declaration and you have the unbelievable colonialism arrogance that Lawrence opposed in his support of an independent Arab nation. What the Arab's hoped to gain by their revolt. This brings me to a point in Anderson's book that really disturbed me when I read it. The fact that Anderson calls Lawrence out as a TRAITOR. This on pages 270-271, "....in any wartime army at any point in history - The divulging of a secret treaty to a third party was considered a consummate act of treason, one sure to win the offender a long prison sentence if not an appointment with a firing squad. Yet a some point during those early days of February in Wejh, Lawrence took Faisal aside and did precisely that, revealing to him both the existence and salient details of Sykes-Picot." No one doubts that Lawrence at this time knew of the treaty but I am hard pressed to see any evidence that Lawrence was a traitor. There are many other numerous explanations about how and when Faisal first found out about the treaty. If Lawrence was in fact a traitor I would have thought the French at the very least would have pressed the point with their British allies. I don't believe any other biographer has made a point of this issue. Anderson then even ends his book in the Epilogue by saying, "Everything T.E. Lawrence had fought for, schemed for, arguably betrayed his country for, turned to ashes....." This is a heavy handed indictment. The interesting thing about Lawrence is that many things about him are elusive and will always remain a matter of conjecture. But I for one feel Anderson has gone over the top on this claim. (Much the way prior biographers have made the point that Lawrence was a homosexual. No one will really know for sure but then does it matter.)Lastly, I take exception to Anderson's brief depiction of Lawrence in the Epilogue diagnosing Lawrence as having had Post-traumatic stress disorder. Anderson further says, " ...it is hard to escape the image of a sad and reclusive man, his circle of friends and acquaintances steadily dwindling to a mere handful...".No doubt Lawrence had a unique and difficult personality to understand. How many Britain's would turn away from being knighted by their King during the actual ceremony? None before Lawrence. John Mack in his Pulitzer Prize winning book, THE PRINCE OF OUR DISORDER: The Life of T.E. Lawrence (1976) devoted a whole book to doing a psychological study of Lawrence (One of the best books on Lawrence). In Michael Korda's recent book, HERO: The Life and Legend of Lawrence of Arabia (2010) Korda paints a more convincing picture than PTSD where Lawrence having sought fame, having become a celebrity as big as say Diana today, found he did not like living with fame. Rather than leverage his fame like most people would be expected to do Lawrence hid from it. I always thought the fact that he grew up keeping the secret that he was illegitimate in class contentious Britain that he was a pretender. The work Lawrence did after the war was never going to be heroic...the stuff of headlines.... But he was an intellectual who wrote two books and translated others. The letters he wrote were long and interesting and send to a wide circle of acquaintances yielding who collections of text. Yes, Lawrence was not like the rest of us... and that is why his legend, myth and enigma endure. In Anderson's Acknowledgments at the end of his book Anderson gives high recognition to Jeremy Wilson whose authorized biography, LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (1990) and says, "While I respectfully disagree with Mr. Wilson on several aspects of Lawrence's actions in Arabia. I am deeply indebted to the astounding amount of scholarly research he has done on Lawrence......" If you're a fan of all things Lawrence you no doubt know that Jeremy Wilson and his wife Nichole own Castle Hill Press. They have been publishing fine collector quality books by Lawrence for some twenty years. I own several of these the two most recent being THE MINT and BOATS FOR THE RAF 1929 - 1935. I recommend the Wilson's work to you as well as Wilson's T.E. Lawrence Studies page on internet. (Here he also does a good power point presentation covering the historical accuracy of the movie.)For those who like and collect things Lawrence I want to also mention a book I found very well published and presented. It is in part what one might term a small coffee table book. It is Joseph Berton's T.E. LAWRENCE AND THE ARAB REVOLT (2011.Lawrence is now but a drifting bit of sand blowing across the landscape of a land and people he loved that today is fractured by human intolerance. He became the medieval knight he dreamed of becoming. And I think that is what drew my Father to Lawrence.

This book is a very worthy attempt to endow a much-told tale with a contemporary perspective. The history of T.E Lawrence as Lawrence of Arabia is well known, and Anderson tries to tell story of the “man behind the myth”, with much emphasis on his family life, and early interests in mediaeval history and archeology. He traces the development of Lawrence’s growing involvement with the cause of Arab self-determination – initially as part of the British war effort against the Ottoman Turks, and increasingly motivated by his empathy with the Arabs and their cause – to the extent that he often defied orders from his superior officers and took actions that were not necessarily in the best interests of Britain’s strategic objectives. He tries to analyze the motivations for many of the more troubling (to contemporary sensibilities) actions or incidents during Lawrence’s time in Arabia , and picks apart the various accounts of them - often contradictory - in Lawrence’s own writings and in those of others that knew him. The author seems intent on establishing a consistent and objective “truth” about Lawrence’s nature, which may not recoverable. The book is much larger than just the story of Lawrence, because Anderson deliberately sets out to create an epic narrative. He introduces three other characters, whose lives and activities during the war years are recounted alongside those of Lawrence. They are William Yale, a young American oil man who almost serendipitously became the then rather amateurish US State Department’s expert on the Middle East; Curt Prufer, a German intelligence operative, and Aaron Aarohnson, the Jewish/Palestinian agronomist who formed the NILI spy ring in Palestine working on behalf of the British. Following extensive background on each of these three, the author uses the standard epic novel technique of interspersing contemporary narratives of the activities of each of them with those of Lawrence. Much of it is interesting; for example, the very detailed account of Aaron Aarohnson’s trials and tribulations in attempting to get the British to take his spy ring seriously, or his involvement in the Zionist movement. But overall, much of it is just filler; Lawrence was a “mover and shaker” who influenced events on a massive scale; the other three are minor characters, for the most part observers who had little or no influence in shaping either the war efforts or strategic outcomes of their respective nations. The account of Lawrence in Arabia gains nothing – other than length – from this treatment. This is clearly a book written by a journalist, rather than a historian – not because of any deficiency in the author’s research – but because it takes a very moralistic contemporary point of view of British and French imperialistic policies, how the war was mismanaged with a reckless disregard for life, and how the peace was so badly compromised. This is with the benefit of 90 years’ hindsight and the sensibilities of a contemporary liberal outlook , although a clearer understanding of past events is usually better seen from the perspective of their participants. One gets the impression that the wartime Anglo-French jockeying for control of large parts of the soon to be ex-Ottoman empire is the whim of individual English and French players, rather than a strategic rivalry between these so-called allies. James Barr’s “A Line in the Sand” does a better job of this, because it follows the rivalry through the next 30 years after WW1. Anderson of course is concerned primarily with Lawrence, so his book ends with Lawrence’s exit from the scene, and subsequent events are only covered very briefly in the epilogue. “A Line in the Sand” is no less replete with interesting characters than “Lawrence in Arabia”; but the difference is that in the former, the characters subserve the narrative, rather than the other way around. If you are interested in reading an in-depth analysis of T.E Lawrence, then this book will give you that – but you will also have to learn almost as much about Yale, Aarohnson and Prufer. If you are looking to understand, as the cover blurb says “… the making of the modern middle east”, there are more complete and less judgmental accounts to be read.

As more than a thousand people have already noted, this is a good book. It is not some dusty historical account. Although Scott Anderson seems to suggest he is a historian in his opening notes, he is not. This is an entertaining treatment of the WWI Middle East theater, written by an accomplished journalist and novelist. It is not entirely about Lawrence, the would be archaeologist and insurgent, either. Three other main characters are added to tell the story from a variety of angles. There is an American Standard Oil man turned spy, a German language professor become intelligence officer, and a Zionist agronomist working as a double agent against the Ottoman Empire. All four unlikely persons become increasingly intertwined in the conflicts between British, Turkish, German and Arab regional interests. There is also a well developed supporting cast of the requisite military men and period politicians who need to be to be introduced along the way.The plots and subplots are woven together in a writerly manner. At times you can almost forget that you are reading about actual events. The opposing factions are layed out clearly, and are easily understood. Anderson is witty, if somewhat glib in his portrayal of the actions and intentions of the players. Should I have a complaint, it would be that the book is too entertaining in a facile way. It reads like a screenplay; when will the movie be out? Oh right, it's already been done.
