About the Author

William Navidi received a B.A. in mathematics from New College, an M.A in mathematics from Michigan State University, and a Ph.D. in statistics from the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Navidi is a professor of applied mathematics and statistics at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado. He began his teaching career at the County College of Morris in Dover, New Jersey. He has taught mathematics and statistics at all levels, from developmental through the graduate level. Dr. Navidi has written two engineering statistics textbooks for McGraw-Hill and has authored more than 50 research papers, both in statistical theory and in a wide variety of applications, including computer networks, epidemiology, molecular biology, chemical engineering, and geophysics.

The book explains concepts fairly well, and has decent example problems. However, I have an issue with it especially because it is a statistics book, where there are very minor equation shifts for very similar types of problems--it would be really nice if the book included a sort of equation sheet at the end of each chapter, stating the type of problem that each equation is useful for. Like after the chapter on hypothesis tests (which really blend together), it would be great if there were something like "Two-tailed hypothesis test, large sample: this equation; Chi-squared hypothesis test: this equation," etc. It had little boxes where there were important equations, but a summary sheet would have been incredibly helpful.

My students, on the whole like statistics. I think the text plays a key part in this. The problems are realistic and not over repetitive. I use R as my programming language for the course, with no difficulty.

Awesome book. Great examples and easy to follow hw problems.

Reading though the text book isn't too horrible, the book generally makes sense. My two main vices with this book is that it is sometimes difficult to understand what a specific symbol represents or where they got the value for it. I also don't like how you have chapters 1-10, the tables, answers to odd # questions then the index. It makes the tables incredibly difficult to find (except for the ones on the front and back cover. I recommend putting tabs into your own copy so you can find the tables easier.

The textbook served the purpose well for my stats class that it was required for. The book is pretty well laid out and has good summary boxes after each section. The one thing I would warn is that the same professor that wrote this book also wrote "Principles of Statistics for Engineers and Scientists", which is not the same. If you are getting this as a required textbook for a course, make sure you are getting the right textbook!

This book was alright for learning engineering statistics, but it wasn't as easy to follow and 'dumbed down' as I hoped it would be. It was a very challenging class and I wish the text book had done a little better job of explaining.

This is a wonderful, clear book for an introduction to statistics. It has plenty of concrete examples and it's well paced and laid out. I've used it extensively for my Ph.D. research in space physics. One word of caution: there's not really any discussion about time-series data, so if you're dealing with dependent samples or an autoregressive process, this book will only get you half way there.

This book is clear and concise. It's also very easy to understand and follow. I would've given 5 stars, but there was a little tear in the back cover.

Philosophical PragmatismThere are a handful of teachers/elders out there at this moment who are emphasizing the importance of ancestors and relating to them. Daniel is the only one I have come across who is actually teaching the practical steps of engaging them in a safe, direct, effective, compassionate, and intimate way. He generously shares dozens of powerful ways (specific rituals) to work with ancestors of blood, place and spiritual traditions. These are informed by a myriad of traditions he has studied with impressive depth (Important note here: the author is sensitive to and courageously addresses cultural issues such as appropriation/misappropriation with compassion, humility, and accountability, which is such a rarity amongst white teachers in spiritual settings). His methods are also informed by his clear connection to his own ancestor work. One of the things that the book discusses is how ancestors are basically subject-matter-experts on what our life purpose and destiny is while we are their face here on earth. And it is clear by this book that the author is well in touch with his ancestors, and is right on track with his own personal calling. Honestly, if you are looking to engage your own ancestors, this the primary book I would recommend.Non-Dogmatic DirectionIt is so rare to come across a book discussing spiritual ideas these days that is not New Age and full of what increasingly seems like not-very-well-thought-out advice. If anything, Daniel’s book is the opposite of new age. Rather, it is a contemplative, proactive reclamation and restoration of something much more ancient, powerful, relevant, and what to me, feels like truth. All of this said, one of the most endearing traits of the author and the book, is the recurring theme of offering up direction based on experience and research, in stark contrast to the dogmatic approach so many others seem to be taking these days. The humbleness of Daniel and the accessibility of this book in the face of the fierce competence clearly gained by years of experience and education in his field, is a worthy feat and I think it’s notable enough to mention here. Usually folks who are this competent in their respective areas of study tend to have a confidence that feels overwhelming, especially to folks new to the topic. This wasn’t the case at all with this book. It reads as much more of a sweet invitation to the work, as opposed to an onslaught of facts, inaccessible knowledge, etc.Radical ResultsThese practices have, and consistently continue, to transform my life. I don’t share this lightly. Since embarking on this journey, building real relationships with my own ancestors based on the practices in this book, every area of my life has shifted. Many of the shifts have tended to center on figuring out why I’m here and why I am needed at this moment. I’ve learned how to step into my destiny with more purpose and have received increasingly clear direction on bringing forth the gifts that are particular to me – becoming braver and a bit more healthily unapologetic about doing what I was born to do, and understanding the ways in which I am necessary in the world at this moment. These practices and the cultivation of coming into deeper relationship with my ancestors jolted me to face the (urgent but not desperate) reality that my attendance on this Universe at this time means that my presence is mandatory, and so is the courageous bringing forth of my ‘me-ness’. Gratitude and respect to Daniel and his ancestors for bringing this book into the world at this time.

During the long death rattle of the empire, amidst a scorched field of orphaned hearts, how can we feel that we belong? And belong to what? To whom? When even belonging itself has been subverted by social oppression, we must still find a way. Is that way new, or ancient? Can we remember beyond our modern amnesias to a way of communicating that is uniquely mammal uniquely human? I searched, transpersonally, for many decades, seeking to heal the deficiencies crowned upon me by those who did the best they could. In my disgust I disregarded anything having to do with blood family, having been shown no reason why that would result in goodness. Down the line i discovered that in indigenous cultures, the 3 pillars of spiritual connectivity were Land, Ancestor, and Diety. Being fine with the first and last, i noticed my strong aversion and confusion to the middle sibling of that trio. Asking for guidance from the spirit of google, i began to search for non culturally appropriative ways of dealing with the sticky question of ancestry, and happily discovered Daniel Foor and his work. Having taken some of his workshops and had sessions with him over the phone, i can say that the practices have changed my life for the better, and have allowed me to cast off that heavy crown of recent history and look towards both a better future, and a better past.

I am 80% of the way through my kindle version of this (I use an accessibility feature to have it read to me aloud) and I almost stopped in the middle of the bustling downtown Seattle sidewalk this morning from pure amazement. And it wasn’t the first moment I thought this: “Is this really happening? Do I really, for under $20, get acces to a breadth and depth of concrete, practical, instructional wisdom from someone’s lifes work?” I mean seriously. When I picked it up I had no idea it would have so much helpful step by step instructions for doing the work. I still do hope to study with Daniel Foor in person or online,but in the meantime I have lots to do working from this book.

This book is important, especially for white folks who have lost a lot of their culture (hello America!) Putting us back in touch with our Ancestors works to heal a lot of things, epigenetically, socially, culturally, and in our own hearts. The actions recommended in the book encourage us to seek out what we've lost and to learn who our ancestors were, what their lives were like-reconnect with the DNA we still carry from them....This book is not light reading-it calls you to work through the process. It is probably the most valuable, soul-reclaiming work I've ever done. It will change how you see yourself. I highly recommend this book, this author and his online classes as well.

I am now reading my third book. The first was outstanding, the second was also very good. Now, I am reading 'The Laws of Medicine'. As a Physician, I am truly enjoying it so far. The concept of Teds Books is superb, and I am loving it! I am sharing with my Physician husband who gave me this 'gift' for Christmas.I must admit that the first book, 'The Terrorist's Son', just blew me out of the water! It was a mind changer for me, as an American. It is a 'must read'!

Such a pleasure to read! Obscure but fascinating subjects, well written. About (100) pages each, which is cool since you get a very good feel for the concepts, but needn't devote the time to read entire volumes on the matters. If you like TED talks, these are perfect - and quite a bit cheaper than the real thing;)

I got these as a gift for my boyfriend. He loves them.

It brings convenience to my life .
