I had a lot of fun filling this out. It helped me reflect on how much my mom has done for me, and all the ways she has shaped who I am. I spent about a month filling this out and gave it to her for Mother's Day. She loved it. She cried. I am officially her favorite child.I liked that this book allowed for a good mix of sappy moments and funny moments. My mom is both the loving, caring type AND my hilarious best friend. Some prompts lend themselves to recounting funny inside jokes and memories, while others were the perfect moment to let her know just how much I appreciate her love and support.There were several sections that called for drawing. I suck at drawing. I do not like to draw. It worked anyway. I used a mix of silly doodles and pasted in family photos, and it worked out just fine despite my initial unease with the drawing portions.I live on the opposite side of the world for my mom, and her life has been rough lately. She told me recently that when she's lonely or sad she looks through this book and it makes her feel like I'm at home. Definitely what I was going for.This review has been a bit rambly. Clearly I am not an eloquent writer. But the guided prompts in this book helped me make something my mom truly cherishes, so I think that's a good enough reason for you to buy it.

Okay, so for the person purchasing this, be informed that it will take a while to fill this whole book out! But believe me, it will be worth it...my mom was absolutely thrilled to get this for mother's day. She pored over every page and, since it was a group gift that each kid (ranging in age from 18-38) in my family picked up and filled out on their own copy of, she had so many memories and pictures nicely compiled. It took me an entire rainy day to fill it out properly but it was so, so worth it. It works for sons and daughters and there are even a few entries that apply if you are now a parent yourself (but not so many that it throws of the tone of the book/feels awkward if you don't have kids yet.) The fact that it's a nice hardcover makes it seem more suitable as a gift and not cheaply made. Take your time, enjoy finding some photos, mementos, and memories to fill it with, and you'll have really nice, personal gift for a mom in your life.

Eh... It's a sweet idea but I find some of the stuff in there quite tacky. I didn't like how they prompted you with examples of what to write after certain questions. ie: Things that remind you of mom and it goes on to list perfumes, or whatnot. Didn't give you the freedom to list what you want because it's basically guiding you to write certain stuff. I think it's fine for less creative types.

Gave this to my mom for her birthday and she loved it. I believe "This is my most prized possession" were her exact words. It didn't take an excessive amount of time to fill out which I liked (I worked on it oven a weekend). And the promps were really good too. Much better then similar products, would definitely buy again!

A very thoughtful gift to get. It takes a little effort and thoughtfulness to complete it but it's bound to pull your mothers heart strings. Some of the pages and questions are a little silly/pointless but overall very thorough and brings you both down memory lane. I would have given it 4 stars but it made my mom shed a tear so how could I not give it full plate?! Highly recommend!

Got this for my mom's 44th birthday. There's a lot to this little book. Some things are repeated with different wording, but still really adorable and heartfelt. Probably best for someone older, maybe in their late 20's. I'm 19 and it had me answer questions about children and marriage, but it also gave me the option to say "what I would think" or "what I would like" for the future instead. Really nicely made and even has a section in the back for other loved ones to write their own little notes. :) Gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because of the repeated questions and the strictness to who can use this. I would not recommend this to anyone under 18. All in all a great purchase and I really think she will love it.

I bought this a few months ago to write for a Mother's Day gift. Like other reviewers, this book takes time to fill out. I made sure to order it far in advance so I could put thought and time into it. I did a page or two most days until I completed it. I also put a bunch of pictures in it for her, personal quotes, memories. These things all took time to make it heart felt and sentimental. I mailed it to her and am excited to find out what she thinks! I think she will be very surprised.

My mom said this book changed her! It's 60 + pages with areas to fill in stories and pictures. It definitely takes some time to complete but is SO worth it!

Groucho Marx dropped out of school when he was 12 years old. Even so, he was considered the "scholar" of the family, compared to his brother Harpo, who dropped out of the first grade. While other poor Jewish families stressed education as a means of moving up in the world, Minnie Marx put her faith in getting her five sons into show-business. Despite the fame and fortune he achieved as an entertainer, Groucho Marx always longed to be a writer.And thanks to a lifetime of reading, he became a writer and a damned good one. He's quick to correct any impression the reader might have that this book is another "as-told-to" celebrity memoir. With typical self-deprecating bravado, he brags that, " every word of this stringy, ill-written farrago is being sweated out by me."It's far from ill-written. Instead it's a wonderfully readable autobiography and it tells his version of the amazing journey of the Marx brothers from a New York tenement to Beverly Hills mansions. They were an "over-night" sensation in the sense that they burst into prominence after years of making a precarious, painful living in small-time vaudeville. Once they played the Palace in New York city (ultimate venue for vaudeville performers), they went on to Broadway productions, and then into the movies that would make them a household word. When television eroded the popularity of movies, the versatile Groucho exploited his quick wit to become a successful TV host.When this book was published in 1959, Marx was approaching 70 and living with his third wife Eden and with Melinda, the daughter of his second marriage. There are funny stories about Melinda, portraying him as a loving, if grumpy father. Eden is praised as a "beauty" and very little else is said about her. In a few more years, that marriage would go the way of the first two and his relationship with Melinda would become as strained as his relationships with his older children.He tells his life story in a series of amusing anecdotes that pretty much ignore the hardships his family experienced. He says in his introduction that he believes it to be impossible to write a truly honest autobiography and warns his readers not to expect one. The weakness of this book is not that he's dishonest, but that he reveals almost nothing of himself to his readers.We learn nothing meaningful about his relationships with his parents or siblings. His first two marriages are ignored. There are funny stories about his son Arthur Marx, but his older daughter Marion is never mentioned. Typically, he dedicates the book, not to his parents, wife, or children, but to six writers who inspired him. He seems to be saying, "My private life is none of your business." A legitimate attitude, but a strange one in a man who's writing his autobiography.You finish this book having enjoyed lots of belly laughs. You marvel at Groucho's skill at telling amusing stories. You feel privileged to have a peek into the fascinating, almost unbelievable world that was the entertainment industry in the first half of the 20th century.You meet some incredible people, but you never really meet the man who wrote the book. He uses laughter to hide his emotions. His son later wrote that his father consistently used jokes to maintain an emotional distance from his wives and children. A very, very funny man, but not one you want to live with. As entertainment, this is a fine book. I wish that this sensitive, intelligent man had opened up his heart, but apparently he couldn't. That was the great tragedy of his life.

Without even trying, Groucho Marx was a very funny man. He was irreverent and cutting, but never malicious. You should read his letter to Warner Brothers when they sent him a 'cease and desist' letter about the movie Night in Casablanca. If you are looking for a non-autobiography autobiography, this is it. He constantly tries to avoid talking about his personal life, but the whole book is clearly about his personal life. There just aren't any like him left out there anymore.

This wonderful autobiography of Groucho Marx that will leave you laughing from start to finish. It is very thought provoking and timeless in nature despite the many pop and historic references. Some you will probably not understand because pop culture has long since forgotten them. The chapter describing the time leading up to the stock market crash is both remarkably insightful and comedic. It is one great read.

More oblique humor, much less direct sense of the person. I liked "Harpo Speaks" much more. Groucho and Me does report what author considers some facts of his early natal family, early entertainment, vaudeville circuit, movies, celebrity, but he's miserly on him as a person—except what reader infers by the lack of such content.

Despite many infuriating typos, particularly in the first ten pages, this was a fun book to read. The humor still shines through. It is more of a memoir than an autobiography, though. It’s not a comprehensive account of his life.

Odd that a book written by someone I consider the Funniest Man In The World, my single favourite comedian of all time, should be such a disappointment. Published in 1959 at the height of his popularity on the comedy-quiz radio and TV program You Bet Your Life, this is more of an anti-autobiography, Groucho Marx characteristically doing his anarchic thing by telling only briefly of his youth and early stage successes in vaudeville and on Broadway and then veering off constantly (and unsteadily) into meditations on love, sex, marriage, Hollywood and even the poor souls at the publishing company who actually expect him to write a "straight" account of himself, which he of course refuses to do.Groucho Marx, it's been said, had a natural inborn greatness that defied analysis (but I'll still try!). There was something about his silly walk, his nasal whine, his defiance, his sudden punning broadsides, and sheer anarchic presence that just was Funny Incarnate. He is famous for a long stream of clever, provocative one-liners and for just saying such random, improvisational things onstage as "Pardon me while I have a strange interlude", or, "You're very fortunate the Theatre Guild isn't putting this on. And so is the Guild".Just looking at those isolated lines in an Amazon.com review you already see it; this is a type of comedy that's probably not so good on paper.Dick Cavett always says Groucho was "a great writer", but I disagree. I think Cavett's appraisal is colored by his personal fondness for his old friend, the irresistibly playful and sneaky sound of Groucho's voice, and this is what Cavett really cherishes and misses. I believe a great deal of what made Groucho funny was thus performance; unlike Peter Cook, Woody Allen, Monty Python, or Bob & Ray, whose material was funny just to read. Groucho and the Marx Brothers benefitted enormously from their writers, George S. Kaufman, Morrie Ryskind, S. J. Perelman, Arthur Sheekman, Nat Perrin, etc. Basically they provided the structure and the brothers would polish and embellish. It's possible that Groucho's, dare I say it, shortcomings, are less noticeable in the Marx Brothers' many wonderful movies; flanked as he was by brother Chico's malapropisms, illogic, and crazy piano playing, plus Harpo's madcap pantomime and harp playing. The Marx Brothers as a unit are as strong and entertaining a comedy team as I could possibly imagine. Their originality and talent remain stunning, their mark on comedy history of course indelible. But on his own, Groucho always seemed too meandering, which is what Steve Allen might have been getting at (in his book Funny People's chapter on Groucho) about not considering Groucho's own "act" as being very strong. There is some truth to it; after the Marx Brothers amicably broke up Groucho never even tried to be a regular stand-up comic in nightclubs, which was wise. He was clearly at his very best in impromptu conversation, something his producers on You Bet Your Life seemed to know better than Groucho himself.Ultimately he's a good writer because he's charming. The reason he isn't a great writer is his disregard of structure. That's why The GrouchoPhile, his later autobiography, is so much better; the structure. And, tellingly, it was written by Groucho and Someone Else.Groucho and Me, by contrast, is good but not great. Still, I love and cherish my 1960 paperback copy of it...because it's got that iconic Groucho Marx rolled-eye, chin-on-fist-holding-cigar-pose and a facsimile of his signature on the cover. Pathetic fan-boy that I am. ☺

Rather good book when it comes to method and where to start but I found the Ed Roth booklets to be a lot more helpful on the basis of Ed made you feel like he was your buddy ACTUALLY giving you useful information (the one thing this book lacked in comparison to Ed's is this says nothing about how long it takes for a brush to break in and make precise lines.) Overall a good book for getting started, but once you finish this one buy "101 Pinstriping Tips" and "Pinstriping" by Ed Roth.

In this book, Alan Johnson goes from start to finish of the world of pinstriping. He discusses paint choice, brush choice, proper bruch care, handling techniques and tutorials. All of this comes with great photographs and proper narration to help understand what is going on. If you are looking to learn how to pinstripe, pick this book up and go from there.

There are a bunch of books out there and most of them call out your lack of ability and talent. Alan says getcha a gallon of paint, a brush and when the gallons is gone you're a striper. But there's a lot of stuff between the top and bottom of the gallon... This has helped tremendously. Color theory, and encouragement throughout. You'll like this one. And it will help you become a better striper.

When I think back to when I first read a thumbnail sketch of the first instalment of this tale, I remember thinking "here comes another cleasha rom-com. Fun read. I continued to read hoping that somehow he would find a way to have everyone understand him. Many threads seems to be at play, looking forward to see what happens.

I've watched the anime years ago and the plot is sooo cliché i never had any high hopes for it, then later this year i came across these light novels and decided to give it a try.. now I've been hooked! This book gave me feels man! That scene with wiene! Any body who read this would know what I'm talking about, but dang! Got me all teary eyed and goosebumps all over! Its that good!

A great finish to the story arc. Didn't want it to end.

I wish bell had leveled up again, but he stays level 3 by the end. I bet Asterios will eventually save bell and his party in the deep levels.

This was well worth the wait, i loved the twists, the turns, the schemes,and the unexected miracles that throw everything upside down.

Bonfire of the Vanities has made me a Tom Wolfe fan. It paints a truthful picture of late 20th Century morality. There are no heroes in this book. The egos and dark flaws of its characters are on display for the world to read. Who knows? You might find a bit of yourself in this classic. I don't consider myself a student of literature, but I'd be surprised if this book wasn't required reading for literature majors, or perhaps social studies and first year law students . It's a great read.

After seeing the movie numerous times, I thought it was time to finally read the book. Although sometimes the language can be colorful and literary, overall I could not put it down, and finished it in just a few days.

After 30 years it still resonates -- kind of sad really. Excellent read, for "readers," not for those who like snippet type reading. Only beef. Why of all possible endings did he choose this one?! Very unsatisfying after a substantial commitment to the story. Feels like he rushed the ending.

This book is about the Mercury Project, NASA’s first manned space missions, and the origins of the astronaut program.Tom Wolfe was a practitioner of “New Journalism.” The only previous experience that I had with that style was with Hunter S. Thompson’s alcohol-and-other-drugs-fueled escapades in Las Vegas while covering a race for Sports Illustrated and his alcohol-fueled experiences at the Kentucky Derby. Based on those reading experiences, it was my understanding that one of the hallmarks of New Journalism was Journalist-as-Participant. The historical record, however, is pretty clear that a drunk Tom Wolfe had not, in fact, been blasted into orbit with John Glenn or any of the other Mercury 7 astronauts. How then is The Right Stuff an example New Journalism?Well, Tom Wolfe wrote his butt off. The book reads more “literary” than as an object of traditional journalism. Let me explain…no, there is too much…let me sum up…A traditional journalistic or scholarly book about the early astronauts and “what made them tick” might include quotations from interviews with those astronauts and people that knew them, government officials and news reporters from the time, and maybe a few academics to provide some Authoritative Interpretation. The writer wouldn’t put forth a theory of their own about the astronaut motivations, or, if they did, there’d be a ton of explicit sources backing them up.Tom Wolfe just puts his theories out there, front and center, and then writes with such force – with repeated interjections, sometimes with exclamations! – and capitalizations and callbacks and pretty descriptions and literary techniques that the reader will forget that they are reading some nonfiction book; this story may be (at least in some sense) true, but it reads like a novel. It never really dives into the minutiae of bureaucratic organization nor is it really interested in any one’s point of view other than that which drives the author’s central point: the astronauts were military test pilots fueled by a Manly Competitive Desire to BE THE BEST and that performing well under pressure in that competition exhibits The Right Stuff (which is never explicitly defined, although I have my own theories).I am a fan of David Foster Wallace’s writing, and I could see a clear influence from Tom Wolfe’s style in Wallace’s writing. And David Foster Wallace was certainly not the only literary writer influenced by Wolfe. Fans of literature really should check this out, just to trace back certain styles to their creator (or popularizer). Science fiction fans could be inspired by a (more or less) true account of fighter pilot personality and how their influence (or lack thereof) could impact a fictional space program. Fans of nonfiction could see that there are ways of telling a nonfiction story rather than the usual, traditional methodologies. I’d recommend this book to anyone, just with the disclaimer that it is NOT like the usual biographical or documentary-style rendition of the Mercury Project. The writer’s style is definitely noticeable, and some might be distracted by it (or it could just not be to their taste).

The Right Stuff is the story of 7 men chosen for the Mercury space program and also about the life of Chuck Yeager, a very talented test pilot. Most of the story takes place from the late 50's when the U.S. was in a race with Russia to reach outer space. There was a lot of pressure on the U.S. because Russia had already sent out the first manned space flight. Personally I liked the story a lot, it was very interesting, but I feel like the story spent a lot of time around things that were not important to the progression of the story. Examples of this is when they are all sitting around at their hangout, not really doing anything. The characters were very interesting though, at first they were kind of low down and rowdy, but as the story progresses they end up much more mature and helpful to each other. I learned a lot from this book, such as: Who broke the sound barrier first, who the first to go into space were, and how they all got there. I would recommend this book to those who are looking for an interesting story about the advancement of our current technology.

Tom Wolfe’s account of the test pilot program in the time of Chuck Yeager and the Mercury astronauts is a fascinating look back at a special time in American history. His sardonic take on many details had me laughing, and his genuine love and admiration for the men involved comes shining through in his writing. A line from the end probably sums it up best: “but the day when an astronaut could parade up Broadway while traffic policemen wept in the intersections was no more."This was the story of that time.

Deborah L. Rhode is the Ernest W. McFarland Professor of Law and the Director of the Center on the Legal Profession at Stanford University. Good: This book addresses a very important topic, raises a lot of relevant issues, makes some important points, and is pretty shortBad: The arguments are often pretty fast - Rhode prefers to skim over a lot of the key issues in feminism by glossing over things and deciding to focus on "refocusing the feminist critique" (pg 88) which is really just code for 'I'm going to ignore a lot of the deeper challenges to my work that come from various strands of feminism and instead make fairly uncontroversial points.' For a topic this interesting it would be good to have a more detailed, strenuously defended argument.As it stands, sympathetic readers are going to wish there was more substance, and hostile readers are going to find plenty of holes to poke. The book also contains a few factual mistakes and hasty over-generalizations, which it could certainly have done without.Overall: Worth reading if you're interested in the topic and want to get some of the issues out onto the table, but not so great for digging really deep and figuring stuff out for good.

This book has a really great idea about how there is a beauty bias and the discrimination between those who are attractive and those who are not. But I wish the author were less repetitive and instead wrote more about the psychological aspects for why this bias exists and what we can do.The book is basically a long list of various types of biases and repetition. I was really excited when I read the description of the book but was disappointed when I actually read it.

The topic of the book is very interesting yet I fell like a paper would have been more appropriate because after chapter 3 it is just too repetitive. The introduction gives a good idea and actually makes you expect a lot from the book, however I feel that it actually givesThe whole book away because after it there are no more surprises, same examples, same arguments with no more depth or data.

Very interesting, but too technical for "in bed reading". I didn't finish reading it. I usually find that books by journalists are fun and easy to read and books by professors are not.

The book puts alot into perspetive and makes you think about "beauty" in a different context. The legal angle was a new one for me and I really enjoyed the writing.

The title notwithstanding, the book isn't really about "the beauty bias" as either a psychological or social phenomenon (Rhode is a lawyer, not a social scientist). It is rather about appearance discrimination in general, focusing mostly on discrimination based on race, disability, and obesity. I have no trouble believing such bias exists; sadly, though, Rhode does very little to prove it.Rarely have I seen a valid point so poorly argued. Rhode's argument is ill-supported, faulty in logic, frequently off-topic, and repetitious. I'm not sure how one manages to continuously repeat oneself in only 161 pages of text, but Rhode accomplishes it. Overall, the book gives the impression of having been an over-long law review article that the law students at most major universities justifiably declined to publish.The major problem with the book is that Rhode does not seem capable of formulating a coherent argument starting from a well-supported premise to a logical conclusion. Instead, she starts with some irrelevant personal anecdotes, throws around a number of disorganized facts gathered and claims made by others, impugns appearance-based discrimination with only minimal and unsatisfactory refutation of counterarguments, and makes some mostly arbitrary policy recommendations unsupported by any evidence of their effectiveness. By the end, the impression is that you have been the victim of a peroration rather than a scholarly work, and been made to pay for it in the bargain.One irony here is that I believe the problem Rhode discusses, identified by psychologists long ago (taking one incarnation as the "Halo Effect"), is perfectly real and deserves serious consideration. Another is that this book is written by a chaired professor of law at Stanford Law School, conventionally ranked among the highest in the country. It is published by one of the most prestigious academic publishers in the world. Both of which prove that reputation ranks among the least reliable indicators of quality. This gives me an idea for another book: "The Unmerited Reputation Bias." I want back my money and the 6 hours of my life spent reading this.
