I stayed at an artsy hotel in Louisville and this book was in the room. After reading a few pages, I ordered one via Amazon (it was cheaper and I wouldn't need to worry about carrying another thing home). I keep it on my ottoman and guests enjoy reading through it every time they come over.

I think i bought this because an author i love was connected to it, I don’t remember. Total waste of money. It’s just a graphically appealing collection of quotes with no context or writing, bound very nicely so it looks quite good for display i suppose but really no value in reading it. My mistake in not investigating further. One of the worst Phaidon books I’ve purchased.

The title is what drew me in. I am a student of hope, and had not previously thought much about the linkage of hope to art. it's a delightful, far-ranging collection of funny and often irreverent quotations. A good addition to my library. Choose Hope: (Always Choose Hope)

The most wonderful book for creative types who like to think outside the box. The quotes are so well chosen. Every one makes one think, not only about art, but about life itself. I gave several away as gifts and received very positive feedback. Thank you.

Great book.

I like this book a lot. Its a compact but weighty little hardback with chapters divided by theme, and fonts that keep you from getting bored reading it (take note publishers!) Pithy, and encouraging for any artist. Choice of artists are well known who's opinions are trustworthy. Phaidon usually does a good job with art themed books.

Carla Neggers again delivers an amusing and powerful story about the town and people of Knights Bridge MA. The best thing is the cheat sheet in the front with an outline of the town. Great way to refresh your memory. Adrienne & Adam are a fun couple for their similarities as well as their differences. Their romance had a few zig and zags which were enjoyable to follow. You feel for Adrienne as she struggles to find her place in the world - is it in Knights Bridge or will she be on her way to her next adventure? It is also enjoyable to catch up with other citizens whom we met in other books.

A really good and enjoyable experience.I laughed and laughed until there were tears running down my face.This was a romantic story I won't soon forget.

I enjoyed this book. Adrienne and Adam were both likeable characters. Not much drama, just an enjoyable addition to the series.

In a world filled with strife, deception and betrayal, author Carla Neggers takes us to a small-town calked Knights Bridge reminding reader that there are people in this world that are honest caring and devoted to family values and morals. When three young boys go missing and they leave a shirt trail of where they might be, family members and new innkeeper Adrienne van together to search.As the search party forms, they are worried about the three boys and their safety as Maggie their mom has a fall and a head injury that looks serious. Adam Sloan and Adrienne join the search as the author creates an electriccharge that might ignite even further as the storyevolves.There are several storylines within this novel as we get to know the backstory about Adrienne why she came to Knights Bridge and why she decided to take on the position of innkeeper. Adam Sloan is a stonemason and quite talented as a photographer too. They seem to have some type of chemistry but what I like is that the author is allowing their relationship to take on a slow and steady pace letting them time to understand their hopes, wants and needs and to get to know each other’s pasts and what they want in the future. Added in we learn about her father Vic who was kept in the dark about her as she was his existence until she was much older, Staying with him for a while and then moving to the Inn to work, she allows herself to get to know him but in a slow and methodical manner as he was a diplomat and it seems he might be reentering that part of his life once again.With a town where everyone knows most everything about everyone and a favorite in this book is Gran Sloan who might be older but is straightforward, no holds barred and says whatever she wants, you must love the Sloan family and the younger children too as I love dinosaurs especially T-Rex.The story continues letting readers know that Maggie might think she is okay, but you wonder if the head injury might be more serious and needs further attention. While Olivia is about to her a child and Adrienne feels the tension when she is with Adam, will she remain in Knights Bridge, she more of the Stone Bridges or do what she has done before, relocate and move.Author Carla Neggers allows readers to get deep inside the minds of each character’s thoughts, hopes and fears so that they become part of our own world as we get to understand theirs. The way they all came together to create the outstanding girl’s weekend and the expansions they are hoping to create for the Inn and the second one too, the author created a vivid picture of this picturesque place and course Violet and Rohan the precious dogs within this novel that are paramount to the plot and to both Vic and Adam.Getting to learn more about Adrienne’s ex-boyfriend and why it did not work out and that Adam read her wine blog which she is thinking of bringing back you get to know their flaws, their thoughts and her guilt for not telling Vic who she was on day one. Not begin critical of her and sharing many magic moments swimming, seeing the stone bridges, getting to know the area and deciding where each one wanted to go from there, the story is about a town of closely-knit people that still must find their way.Justin and Samantha are renovating their Inn and Carriage Hill has many other improvements that still need to be made but with Olivia and Maggie behind her will she remain in this picturesque place or will she resume of nomad ways? Added in she deals with her mother’s short and yet at times critical phone calls and learns that she too wants more out of life and who knows where she will wind up is that where Adrienne gets her feeling of discontent that she needs to move on? What about her feelings for Adam will they evolve into something else?I love Gran Sloan and that she is doing research for her trip to England and wants to learn more about Churchill and the history of the country and many places before going there for one week and deciding where she wants to tour and what she will see allowing readers to know that age knows no bounds when it comes to knowledge and desires.Added in we learn more about Adrienne and you can feel the tension rising between her and Adam, but will it go anywhere and then she emails her father just to stay in touch and let him know she is thinking about him but will their relationship flourish?When someone odd shows up Adam take the initiative to learn more. Just what is Vic up to and when will they decide they are perfect for each other. Plans change, venues are decided, and the final reveal will bring smiles and tears to the reader’s eyes as Vic’s destinations and decisions will surprise Adrienne as someone shows up and takes her by surprise. A family filled with love, understanding and each one judgmental for the right reasons as Justin and Samantha and Eric, Adam, Brody and the Sloan family must decide if they are ready to welcome Adrienne or not into their fold. A father who learns about his daughter and a mother who comes calls and hopes they will connect.Once again Carla Neggers takes us deep inside the small closely-knit town of Knights Bridge hoping to unite an Inn Keeper of Carriage Hill and a Stone Mason who will enjoy the scenery and cherish and learn more about the STONE BRIDGES that line this town.

If you’ve read any of Carla Neggers’ other Knights Bridge books, you know what you’re getting - a leisurely paced romance taking place in an interesting small town where everyone knows everyone else and most of them are related to each other. But fear not about keeping people straight in your head even if this is your first novel in the series. The author provides a “cheat sheet” to help the heroine, Adrienne, who is relatively new to town keep everyone straight. I have read all the other books and enjoyed them very much and I was surprised at how much I remembered about each character and his/her romance. Usually, the plots of series books all seem to melt together in my mind.I just really like the setting of this town in western Massachusetts. There is a real sense of place and I always finish reading these books and wishing I could travel there.Adrienne and the stone mason, Adam Sloan, seem like an unlikely match, but I enjoyed how their attraction builds. Soon Adrienne will realize that there is a lot more for here in this small town than a temporary stop in her rambling life.I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book that I received from Netgalley; however, the opinions are my own and I did not receive any compensation for my review.

Adam isn't what Adrienne was expecting. Certainly he's different from other men she dated before arriving in Knight's Bridge to confront and get to know her father. She's working as an innkeeper in this delightful small town - and I read this as a standalone so I think I might have missed a few smiles others would have at some of the relationships but it's still a place I know I'd like to visit. These two move into a relationship slowly but don't worry, there's a good payoff. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. I'm now a Neggers fan!

Adrienne Portale has settled into Knights bridge, NH. She originally came to the town to connect with her Father she just learned about. She is working as an Innkeeper.This is part of the Swift River Valley series but could be read as a stand alone. It is a romance in a small town setting. It is a good addition to the series. The romance is slow to develop and along the way you get to know the people and experience life in a small town. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.

Excellent addition to the Swift River Valley series! This is a story with plenty of emotion, chemistry, friends and family relations, love. Adrienne and Adam are strong characters with an obvious attraction to each other. Both are weary of that connection and getting involved. Reading previous books in the series isn’t necessary (the author does a good job of explaining who’s who), but it’s a series worth reading!

William Navidi received a B.A. in mathematics from New College, an M.A in mathematics from Michigan State University, and a Ph.D. in statistics from the University of California at Berkeley. The book explains concepts fairly well, and has decent example problems. However, I have an issue with it especially because it is a statistics book, where there are very minor equation shifts for very similar types of problems--it would be really nice if the book included a sort of equation sheet at the end of each chapter, stating the type of problem that each equation is useful for. Like after the chapter on hypothesis tests (which really blend together), it would be great if there were something like "Two-tailed hypothesis test, large sample: this equation; Chi-squared hypothesis test: this equation," etc. It had little boxes where there were important equations, but a summary sheet would have been incredibly helpful.

My students, on the whole like statistics. I think the text plays a key part in this. The problems are realistic and not over repetitive. I use R as my programming language for the course, with no difficulty.

Awesome book. Great examples and easy to follow hw problems.

Reading though the text book isn't too horrible, the book generally makes sense. My two main vices with this book is that it is sometimes difficult to understand what a specific symbol represents or where they got the value for it. I also don't like how you have chapters 1-10, the tables, answers to odd # questions then the index. It makes the tables incredibly difficult to find (except for the ones on the front and back cover. I recommend putting tabs into your own copy so you can find the tables easier.

The textbook served the purpose well for my stats class that it was required for. The book is pretty well laid out and has good summary boxes after each section. The one thing I would warn is that the same professor that wrote this book also wrote "Principles of Statistics for Engineers and Scientists", which is not the same. If you are getting this as a required textbook for a course, make sure you are getting the right textbook!

This book was alright for learning engineering statistics, but it wasn't as easy to follow and 'dumbed down' as I hoped it would be. It was a very challenging class and I wish the text book had done a little better job of explaining.

This is a wonderful, clear book for an introduction to statistics. It has plenty of concrete examples and it's well paced and laid out. I've used it extensively for my Ph.D. research in space physics. One word of caution: there's not really any discussion about time-series data, so if you're dealing with dependent samples or an autoregressive process, this book will only get you half way there.

Philosophical PragmatismThere are a handful of teachers/elders out there at this moment who are emphasizing the importance of ancestors and relating to them. Daniel is the only one I have come across who is actually teaching the practical steps of engaging them in a safe, direct, effective, compassionate, and intimate way. He generously shares dozens of powerful ways (specific rituals) to work with ancestors of blood, place and spiritual traditions. These are informed by a myriad of traditions he has studied with impressive depth (Important note here: the author is sensitive to and courageously addresses cultural issues such as appropriation/misappropriation with compassion, humility, and accountability, which is such a rarity amongst white teachers in spiritual settings). His methods are also informed by his clear connection to his own ancestor work. One of the things that the book discusses is how ancestors are basically subject-matter-experts on what our life purpose and destiny is while we are their face here on earth. And it is clear by this book that the author is well in touch with his ancestors, and is right on track with his own personal calling. Honestly, if you are looking to engage your own ancestors, this the primary book I would recommend.Non-Dogmatic DirectionIt is so rare to come across a book discussing spiritual ideas these days that is not New Age and full of what increasingly seems like not-very-well-thought-out advice. If anything, Daniel’s book is the opposite of new age. Rather, it is a contemplative, proactive reclamation and restoration of something much more ancient, powerful, relevant, and what to me, feels like truth. All of this said, one of the most endearing traits of the author and the book, is the recurring theme of offering up direction based on experience and research, in stark contrast to the dogmatic approach so many others seem to be taking these days. The humbleness of Daniel and the accessibility of this book in the face of the fierce competence clearly gained by years of experience and education in his field, is a worthy feat and I think it’s notable enough to mention here. Usually folks who are this competent in their respective areas of study tend to have a confidence that feels overwhelming, especially to folks new to the topic. This wasn’t the case at all with this book. It reads as much more of a sweet invitation to the work, as opposed to an onslaught of facts, inaccessible knowledge, etc.Radical ResultsThese practices have, and consistently continue, to transform my life. I don’t share this lightly. Since embarking on this journey, building real relationships with my own ancestors based on the practices in this book, every area of my life has shifted. Many of the shifts have tended to center on figuring out why I’m here and why I am needed at this moment. I’ve learned how to step into my destiny with more purpose and have received increasingly clear direction on bringing forth the gifts that are particular to me – becoming braver and a bit more healthily unapologetic about doing what I was born to do, and understanding the ways in which I am necessary in the world at this moment. These practices and the cultivation of coming into deeper relationship with my ancestors jolted me to face the (urgent but not desperate) reality that my attendance on this Universe at this time means that my presence is mandatory, and so is the courageous bringing forth of my ‘me-ness’. Gratitude and respect to Daniel and his ancestors for bringing this book into the world at this time.

During the long death rattle of the empire, amidst a scorched field of orphaned hearts, how can we feel that we belong? And belong to what? To whom? When even belonging itself has been subverted by social oppression, we must still find a way. Is that way new, or ancient? Can we remember beyond our modern amnesias to a way of communicating that is uniquely mammal uniquely human? I searched, transpersonally, for many decades, seeking to heal the deficiencies crowned upon me by those who did the best they could. In my disgust I disregarded anything having to do with blood family, having been shown no reason why that would result in goodness. Down the line i discovered that in indigenous cultures, the 3 pillars of spiritual connectivity were Land, Ancestor, and Diety. Being fine with the first and last, i noticed my strong aversion and confusion to the middle sibling of that trio. Asking for guidance from the spirit of google, i began to search for non culturally appropriative ways of dealing with the sticky question of ancestry, and happily discovered Daniel Foor and his work. Having taken some of his workshops and had sessions with him over the phone, i can say that the practices have changed my life for the better, and have allowed me to cast off that heavy crown of recent history and look towards both a better future, and a better past.

I am 80% of the way through my kindle version of this (I use an accessibility feature to have it read to me aloud) and I almost stopped in the middle of the bustling downtown Seattle sidewalk this morning from pure amazement. And it wasn’t the first moment I thought this: “Is this really happening? Do I really, for under $20, get acces to a breadth and depth of concrete, practical, instructional wisdom from someone’s lifes work?” I mean seriously. When I picked it up I had no idea it would have so much helpful step by step instructions for doing the work. I still do hope to study with Daniel Foor in person or online,but in the meantime I have lots to do working from this book.

This book is important, especially for white folks who have lost a lot of their culture (hello America!) Putting us back in touch with our Ancestors works to heal a lot of things, epigenetically, socially, culturally, and in our own hearts. The actions recommended in the book encourage us to seek out what we've lost and to learn who our ancestors were, what their lives were like-reconnect with the DNA we still carry from them....This book is not light reading-it calls you to work through the process. It is probably the most valuable, soul-reclaiming work I've ever done. It will change how you see yourself. I highly recommend this book, this author and his online classes as well.

I am now reading my third book. The first was outstanding, the second was also very good. Now, I am reading 'The Laws of Medicine'. As a Physician, I am truly enjoying it so far. The concept of Teds Books is superb, and I am loving it! I am sharing with my Physician husband who gave me this 'gift' for Christmas.I must admit that the first book, 'The Terrorist's Son', just blew me out of the water! It was a mind changer for me, as an American. It is a 'must read'!

Such a pleasure to read! Obscure but fascinating subjects, well written. About (100) pages each, which is cool since you get a very good feel for the concepts, but needn't devote the time to read entire volumes on the matters. If you like TED talks, these are perfect - and quite a bit cheaper than the real thing;)

I got these as a gift for my boyfriend. He loves them.

Well, I put off buying this book for a long time. Mainly due to some 5-star comments that were placed so close together that it was obvious that they were added for the author to drive up his sales. I personally hate that. That being said, I bought it and thought it was very helpful for a budding motion designer to get familiar with the industry jargon and tips on techniques from the industry leaders. Word of caution, the book is definitely NOT a step by step guide to help you create the cool creations in this book (...thus only 4 stars). It's mostly opinions from industry folk along with client screen shots. And of course tips from the author on what he did in the thought process to create what he did.I was considering returning it but there are a lot of highlightable tips throughout. So, I will read it again to see what more I can gain from it.

If you know nothing about motion graphics, get this book. If you know something about motion graphics, get this book. If you think you know everything about motion graphics, get this book. It is not a technical guide and will not make you a master at Cinema 4D or After Effects, rather it is a book about motion-based design theory. It is packed full of industry advice and artistic philosophy from industry veterans and serves as an excellent reference to kick-start your conceptualization process. This book is not the be-all, end-all of books related to motion design; the descriptions are simply adequate and the majority of the text deals with artistic theory. However, it is a curation of some of the best work and ideas created working professionals; it is simply priceless.

Just finished reading this book. Bought it last year.Disappointing to see a scathing review on this one and I am going to try to break it down for newer buyers. Saying the book doesn't 'teach' or 'simply brings up topics' seems quite un-informed and clearly someone who hasn't faced a real client in the industry.What needs to be said first is that in any creative field - 90% is self learning. There will be no book out there which will give you a step by step guide or teach you how to do it. This is not a tutorial book or a step by step guide book. The internet is filled with those and another book isn't needed for the same. On the contrary, it delves into design principles, rules, techniques, conventions, etc. (so that you can learn to break them) It tells you do's and dont's. Imagine it as a printed mentor. Lizzy Mason prefaces THE ART OF LOSING with her own tale of addiction, recovery, rehab and twelve step programs. She second half of the book was a heavy-handed ode to substance abuse recovery. Mason clearly had a Very Important Message she wanted to convey substituting plot and character for her message.Here are some of the reasons I didn’t rate THE ART OF LOSING higher:-Instead of insta-love, Harley had insta-therapy. During her first session she opened up with no trepidation showing the insight of someone who has been in therapy for years.-Harley’s monologues to Mike and his mother.-Audrey’s traumatic brain injury recovery was plot driven and unrealistic to the levels at which thinking and memory return.-Love supersedes 12 step program.THE ART OF LOSING is a well-written, well-intentioned book that I wouldn’t recommend to anyone struggling with substances or anyone who wants to date a newly sober addict. Raf and Harley acknowledge the recommendation to avoid relationships in the first year of sobriety, but say screw it, our new love is way more important, even after he relapses. Raf says he’ll risk the pain of a possible breakup, but the reason for not dating is more to focus on sobriety as a priority. Harley decides she’s up to dating him after two AA meetings and a therapy session. Not a good message.

When I was a young adult, there were no books like this. This is an entertaining book about a deadly serious subject—addiction and recovery. It depicts the real confusion of a seventeen year old girl, who has to face her poor choices and try to make better ones in the future. The Art of Losing deals with peer group pressure and the importance of appearance. It is the kind of book that will engage young people, while allowing them to question their own lives.

This book is wonderful and a must-read for all teens. The writing is beautiful, and the author deals with hard subjects like teen addiction, betrayal, rehab and more with a deft, unflinching hand. At no point does this book slip into being preachy, and I wish I'd had a book like this as a teen. It would've helped me navigate so many tough social situations; better understand what I and some of my friends were going through; and it would've let me know it was ok to go my own way against peer pressure. Beyond all that though, this is a searing sisters story and a swoony sweet romance that will stay with readers long after they're done reading.

This is a great book for teens and for those who wish to understand them better. It explores some of the pain and decision making that takes place during this difficult period in all our lives.

I have been torn between my competing impulses of not being able to put "Shadows in the Vineyard" down and a contradictory desire to extend the time it takes for me to finish this book for as long as possible so as to prolong its enjoyment. The character development and imagery are incredibly vivid and seamlessly melded across time and geography. When you combine this with a love of historical writing and historical fiction as well as crime and mystery novels, "Shadows in the Vineyard" has accomplished at least a trifecta of everything that is dear to me in a book. Although this book is non-fiction, it reads like a novel and keeps you on the edge of your seat.

This book is beyond being entertaining, or informative. It is wise in a pragmatic, life-grit humanistic way, which I find preferable to the crystalline abstraction of philosophy. As I said, it is not a smart book – it is a wise book. To begin with, it is an unusually structured book, and, in essence, it is one continuous exposition from beginning to the end, with stories and facts offered unhurriedly, when they are needed. The pacing is perfect – not hectic-fast, yet not too slow either, requiring reader to slow down just enough to start appreciating the turn of language here and the turn of thought there, and simply start enjoying the process of reading it.Subject-wise, this book mixes history, agriculture, biography, and uses crime more as a pretense to expand on multitudes of topics. If anything, this book falls in line with a well-established literary tradition of books about nothing in particular but everything at once, written by what used to be called “men of letters”. Such mosaic of stories results in a “cumulative” effect, when by the end it grows bigger than the sum of its parts. In other words, one has to complete reading it in order to fully appreciate what a rare gem of a book this is. Which should pose no problem to anyone, unless a truly severe remission of ADHD gets in a way. I personally managed to finish the book in two sessions of about one hour and half each. In this book, which is "the true story of the plot to poison the world's greatest wine," however, author Maximillian Potter, a journalist, takes a much more secular approach to the subject, as he investigates the very real 2010 plot to poison the vines at the Domaine Romanee-Conti on the Cote d'Or. With its Pinot Noir regarded as the world's greatest wine, and its availability limited because the vineyard itself is small, the interest of sophisticated criminals in this wine is not surprising. At auction, a single bottle of Romanee-Conti from 1945 was then fetching as much as $124,000.The 2010 crime within the French vineyard itself is daring, potentially devastating to the vineyard, and both complex and time-consuming to pull off, as an unknown person or persons sets out to extort a million euros from M. Aubert de Villaine, the seventy-one-year-old "Grand Monsieur" who runs the Domaine with his cousin Henri-Frederic Roch. When Aubert de Villaine does not act upon receiving a message, the extortionist gives one last warning, providing more specific information and indicating that he has already drilled the bases of seven hundred vines and has already begun injecting them with poison. He will continue to do this if his terms are not met.Author Potter's broad approach to this subject resembles a compilation of stories about the vineyard, its owners, and its history, jumping back to the time of Louis XV and Madame Pompadour, and then jumping forward to the present, then toggling back and forth. While some might argue that such an approach slows down the narrative, others will treasure the insights gained into the whole subject of wine-producing. Throughout the book, Potter keeps the personalities of his subjects front and center, giving life to a subject which might otherwise feel static. King Louis XV, Madame Pompadour, and the Prince de Conti, an ancestor of the vineyard's owner and cousin of Louis XV, share space with scenes of the extortionist, living in a tiny eighty square-foot cabin carefully disguised on the de Villaine property, while two police try to discover who he is.In the last pages of the book, the author raises questions regarding the succession to M. Aubert de Villaine's position and who the choice may be. He talks about his own background and his reasons for writing the book and his opinions about wine critics with their elaborately over-the-top descriptions of wine, then describes having his first taste of Burgundy in the cellars of Domaine Romanee-Conti, with M. Aubert in decidedly different terms. He tells le Grand Monsieur: "This may sound crazy to you, but when I was a kid there was a candy called Pop Rocks. It was like candied sand and when you put it in your mouth, it sort of bounced around and filled your mouth. "[This wine] is like divine, liquefied Pop Rocks that make me feel lightheaded - the kind of happiness that I felt after I first kissed my wife."

Short, but hot and a bit sweet and it actually had a story!If you feel like reading a short, give this a shot. Avril Ashton writes hot men but she takes the time to explore their connection. It doesn't just read like a bathroom one off at all. (which it isn't, but yanno)I don't know how she made me like 3 guys and invest in their relationship after 70 pages but she did.
