In this book, author Paul Kengor draws parallels between Pope John Paul II and Ronald Reagan. Not only in their great desire to rid the world of the threat of communism but also in events that happened during their lives. The focus is mainly on the history of these two individuals and their combined efforts against what they saw as the greatest threat to liberty and faith but there is considerable thought and room given to the historical stance of the leadership of the Catholic Church. As I am a Christian but not a Catholic, much of this information was new (and informative) to me.The events the two leaders shared start with their childhood influence of a deeply religious parent (father with the Pope and mother with President Reagan) to their first careers as actors to the loss of their fathers mere weeks apart in 1941 and then to their attempted assassinations (again weeks apart) in 1981. The two men, once they met in 1982, developed a good relationship in their efforts and became close friends with what President Reagan called a shared “Divine Plan”.The book also chronicles some of the history of the Catholic Church's stand against Communism when the rest of the world seemed to see it as less of a threat. It also touches on the history of Nazi Germany and other totalitarian movements but the main focus of the book is the relationship and the actions that two of the foremost Christian leaders of their time took to bring down what President Reagan dubbed “the evil empire”.While I generally read historical accounts of much older events than these (some of which happened during my lifetime), I found the book both interesting and thought provoking.

In 1989, Ronald Reagan pointed to a framed photo of Pope John Paul II in his California home and explained the Polish pontiff was "My Best Friend." Like Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill, their friendship was forged by historic events and their place in history and together, they changed the world. More dramatically, Reagan and JPII were shot six weeks apart, miraculously survived and were convinced God has saved them for a special purpose (to relegate the Evil Empire to the Ash Heap of History). This amazing and detailed book, building on earlier masterpieces like "The Second Greatest Story Ever Told" by Michael Gaitley and Newt Gingrich's "Nine Days That Changed the World," authoritatively documents the story of atheistic authoritarianism vs. faith and freedom, Fatima, the 20th century and Reagan and the Pope, showing how the lives of the Polish Catholic and the American Protestant paralleled each other, how they overlapped and intersected. Read this book. You won't regret it.

Before I read this monumental book, the best book I had read on Ronald Reagan and Reagan and winning the Cold War was The Crusader, Ronald Reagan and the Fall of Communism, also by Paul Kengor. It greatly covered in specific detail the precise steps and the risks Reagan took to bring down the "evil empire" and the Berlin Wall. It included Reagan's defense build-up, including missile defense, and his efforts to bankrupt the Soviet Union, all playing a pivotal in Reagan bringing down communism. It's been a while since I have read the book, but, as I remember there was much about Saint John Paul II's major role as well, especially of course in Poland, that proved the be the linchpin in the eventual fall of communism in eastern Europe and Soviet Union. And it was in that book that I first heard that President Reagan considered Pope John Paul II his best friend.I have read a number of books on Ronald Reagan and his role in ending the Cold War, so I thought I was well informed on the subject. I had never heard though what was revealed in this great book. A Pope and a President, John Paul II, Ronald Reagan, and the Extraordinary Untold Story of the 20th Century. I knew of course that Pope John Paul was shot of the Feast of Fatima, May 13, but had no idea how much Reagan was interested in Fatima and its messages and the role it, and the Blessed Mother Mary overall, had in the Pope and the President's ongoing efforts to end communism. I also didn't realize or had forgotten how much President Reagan literally preached a faith in God in his numerous historical speeches in the Soviet Union and elsewhere in the communist world. And the confluence of dates is amazing as well. The Russian Revolution was in 1917, the same year as the Blessed Virgin appeared to the 3 peasant children at Fatima. And I had never realized that Archbishop Fulton Sheen played a role in influencing the Protestant Reagan and bringing down communism. He had given many talks on the evils of communism and how it is a Godless evil. Both Sheen and Reagan are products of the Illinois prairie. I knew that communism is of course and atheistic evil that killed over 100 million in the last century, but did not focus so much on it being a problem of spiritual desolation. Reagan and Pope John Paul II knew though that it was largely a problem of being a Godless system with a spiritual vacuum. Yes, there were specific tactics that Reagan initiated to bring down communism, but his emphasis on the spiritual aspect was what finally did it, even likely playing a role in influencing Mikhail Gorbachev to resign as head of the Soviet Union and thus make way for its demise.Reagan was a life long Protestant, though he had much Catholic influence throughout his life, starting with his Catholic father, his great friend and confidant, Judge William Clark, who served Reagan so well in many posts and played a major role in Reagan's efforts to bring down communism, a long time goal of his too.(Paul Kengor's book on Judge Clark is great as well and highly recommended.) And of course, his "best friend," Pope John Paul II. Reagan also had a great affection for the mostly Catholic Polish citizenry, and so wanted them to be out from under the shackles of communism.I'm a slow reader and rarely read books twice. Even though it is over 500 pages, I plan to make this great book an exception and read it at least one more time. There are so many great lessons, including spiritual lessons, from the examples of two of the greatest men of the millennium, Saint John Paul II and President Ronald Reagan. This book gives one hope in mankind that the world could produce two such great and good men. I cannot recommend this great book highly enough.

Dr Kengor weaves, or more appropriately interweaves, the lives of two contemporaries into a tale of how communism was brought down. Finding both contrasts and parallels in the lives of Saint John Paul II and President Ronald Reagan, the author shows how their interaction and alignment of temporal and divine forces broke the back of the Soviet Union. Intertwining so many of the major figures of the 20th century (Fulton Sheen, FDR, JFK, Mother Teresa, Gorbachev,....), he showed how interactions led to building a common plan, all against the backdrop of the Marian apparitions at Fatima. So much of what's discussed went unreported or the full significance can only be seen in hindsight. It's a great recap of the Cold War through the impact of two men working together for a common purpose.

I am a preschool teacher and I purchased this book to a do a theme on Eric Carle. This book is a great book to set up a child's imagination and to let him/her believe that there is no wrong way to create art. Anyone can be an artist and art is in the eye of the beholder. It is an easy read. I read it to my 2 year old twice and she can already read it back to me. Cute book with a great message!

We bought this book for our 15 month old after borrowing it from our local public library. The book is a tribute to Franz Marc and the freedom of creative expression. My little one loves the bright colors and unexpected animals (red crocodile, polka dotted donkey). It's a simple quick read and we throw in animal noises to enhance the story. When we retuned the book, my little guy kept going to where we keep the library books pointing and crying. Thank goodness for Amazon Prime because we had the book again two days later. This is one we visit daily!

This is the most wonderful book I have seen for children. I purchased it for my new Great-Grandchild and it is an imaginative and creative delight. It is perfect from rocking chair reads through adult hood. In the last pages, the author relates his inspiration as Franz Marc's Blue Horses paintings, so besides teaching creativity and fostering imagination it finishes with exploring artists and art history........

My son and I have enjoyed reading many of Eric Carle's wonderful books since he was born (he's almost 3 now) and this book is no exception. This book is particularly special for us because my son really loves horses and for some reason or another he recently went through about a 4-month spell where he kept telling me he wanted a "blue horse" (I think maybe it is because there is a blue horse in 'Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you Hear?'). So this book was like a dream come true for him. He loves to look at and comment on every animal/illustration in the book, and of course he especially loves the blue horse. So, in short, fans of Eric Carle (big and small) won't be disappointed with this latest installment.

Nice message - that it is OK to paint what you want. You don't have to stay in the lines and you can paint things 'as you see them' - not as they are 'supposed to be' using someone else's standards.I think this is a great lesson for both adults and children. It is OK - even Good - to be yourself. The very simple message stays with you through the 'different' images he offers - thus the recommendation for both child and adult artists.

Good quality board book with a simple charming story. It will help with animal names, colors, and the silliness/creativity of painting things the “wrong” colors. I bought this to go with a rubber horse hopper for a 1 year old’s birthday gift. The rubber horse is blue of course.

As always, the illustrations by Eric Carle are exceptional, as is the "think outside of the box" message. The first blue horse I ever saw was a very very long time ago. It was in an art class at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, MI in 1967. The man who painted it was Franz Marc. It was a "think outside the box" moment for me back then. I was delighted to learn that it was Franz Marc who also inspired Eric Carle!

Who could not love the bright colors and simple shapes! I was so pleased that a kindergartener could read this to me. I love all of his books and I know I am in good company!

As Dr. Fung states in his book “You might think that evolution would perfect our damage control responses, allowing us to live forever. But evolution doesn’t care if you age or even if you survive. It ensures the survival of the species, not the individual. Once you’ve had children, your genes will survive even if you don’t, so there is no natural selection toward longer lived species.”But that doesn’t mean you can’t optimize your health approach to live as long and as healthy as possible. Clearly one of the foundational strategies of achieving a long life in which you maintain all your function into old age would be to make certain you have the healthiest diet possible.Dr. Fung has done an excellent job at summarizing the best tips in his latest book. What I found particularly fascinating was his review of how much protein you need and the timing of the protein. This is important because one of the keys to living long and healthy is to make sure you activate a process called autophagy.Autophagy is from the Greek works for self-eating and describes a process in which your body targets damaged and defective intracellular elements and sends them to lysosomes where they are digested to their constitutive elements so they can be recycled into new proteins and structures like mitochondria.By optimizing the amount and timing of your protein levels you can prevent activation of mTOR that will inhibit this valuable process of autophagy repair and rebuilding. The mTOR pathway is crucial as it is the most potent stimulus to shutting down autophagy. The key is figuring out your “Goldilock’s” dose of protein.Too little protein causes disease. Too much protein causes disease. What’s the right amount? Too little protein can lead to devastating muscle loss and if you have too much that will shut down autophagy. Dr. Fung provides extensive information on not only how to calculate your optimal protein dose but also discusses the timing. I recently interviewed him on my website and if you type in his name in my search engine you can see his video interview in which he provides some of this information in greater detail. His book also extensively reviews intermittent fasting and calorie restriction which is the only non-pharmacological method of consistently extending life span and protecting against many age related diseases. We all know that clean water is essential for health but he has a large section on how tea is the second most popular beverage in the world after water and how you can wisely use it to improve your health. His co-author Dr. Nicolantonio does a wonderful job of describing the most important nonessential amino acid, glycine and how it can serve to improve your health through increasing your glutathione levels and many vital proteins. So if you are looking for some solid recommendations to improve your health I would strongly encourage you to pick up a copy of the Longevity Solution.

I really, really wanted to like this book. I have read two of Dr. Fung's other books: Obesity Code and his Guide to Fasting, articles from his IDM blog, as well as watched many talks and videos by him on youtube.I eagerly pre-ordered this book, as I was hoping to reconcile the conflicting messages from the low-carb lifestyle community and the longevity recommendations from other books, such as Blue Zones, Brain Rules for Aging Well, Spark!, and Aging with Grace (a wonderful book on the Nun Study). The book sort of answers this question by promoting a plant-based (but not vegetarian) diet (similar to Blue Zones and other evidence promoting plant-based) within confined eating windows (intermittent fasting, which brings the benefits of light ketosis). I like this idea as I find it much less constraining than ketogenic regimes, and I also find it very easy to follow.Having said that, the book felt more like a rough draft compilation of one-off recommendations (chapter after chapter about beverage choices...), mixed in with blatant product placement ads right in the text. I found this very disappointing, especially after Fung's straightforward and common-sense messages from Obesity Code and Guide to Fasting. If you are expecting the same quality of work, you will be disappointed. If you are just beginning your book research into aging well, try any of the other titles I've listed above for a more well-rounded approach. I am not afraid of getting old, I am afraid of getting *old and sick*. Other books have addressed this concern for me much more completely than Longevity Solution. If you are brand-new to Dr. Fung's work, I would recommend his other two titles- Guide to Fasting and Obesity Code (I am not overweight, but read this book because of a family history of both middle-aged weight gain and diabetes, I found it extremely useful for preventative practices.)

Disappointed in Dr Fung! I read your books on fasting and obesity but these book contradicts much written in the other books. I don't recommend itðŸ˜ΕΎ

A lot of the information such as calorie restriction, fasting, and some food choices is excellent. However, foods to fight cancer is mostly missing. I would recommend Richard Beliveau's book FOODS TO FIGHT CANCER and checking the internet for articles about food compounds mentioned in the book and how they are being studied in regard to cancer. It's difficult to get everything right and the book's mentioning casein as a protein source gets called into question by the article "A Milk Protein, Casein, as a Proliferation Promoting Factor in Prostate Cancer Cells". Also, the exercise recommendations seem outdated and are missing precautions that would have saved me from needing knee replacements. As author Doug McGuff, M.D. says in his book BODY BY SCIENCE Kenneth Cooper could be called " the man who destroyed America's knees". I think running would be fine if there are sand dunes to run on to reduce the impact on kneesand if your skeleton is perfectly aligned. Also, i would recommend periodic X-rays by an orthopedic surgeon to check for cartilage wear especilly on the nees and shoulders. Resistance training, as well as running, can accelerate cartilage loss. Bodybuilder Frank Zane, a four-time Mr. Olympia winner, has had shoulder replacements.Again, it would be impossible to cover everything in a single book. So I found the book a good read and would recommend it.
