Readable, clear, well-documented, with invaluable maps in the front (which I referred to countless times as I read) and augmented by a nice collection of illustrations. A consistent, honest portrayal of Marion (de-mythologized but not adversely so), and sufficient suspense to keep the reader interested and reading quickly. A long-overdue account of this compelling figure. Four and a half stars.

If you interested in Francis Marion, aka the Swamp Fox, this is new and fresh look at his life and his legacy. This book is well written and thoroughly researched. The author does well, in my opinion, to explain why Marion's guerrilla style warfare tactics were crucial to defeat the British in the American Revolution. Always fascinated by history, and I found this especially good.

A number of years ago Walt Disney released the first three episodes of "The Swamp Fox" on DVD. Sadly, the final five episodes remain "hiding in the glen." Author John Oller does things differently. He gives you the complete story, and a good one it is. Of all the fine books written about Francis Marion, this one is the best. I learned several years ago that the Swamp Fox wore a red coat during part of the Revolutionary War, but no other author explained why. John Oller, however, supplied the answer. The book is very detailed and interesting and helps one to know Francis Marionbetter and appreciate him even more. Marion is deserving of the highest respect for the part he played in securing our country's liberty, and John Oller is to be commended for this wonderful biography he has written.

This is a fine biography of Fancis Marion, the "Swamp Fox." His irregular fighting against the British and loyalist forces in South Carolina was an important element in keeping an American military presence in the south. With other irregular units (e.g., Sumter and ), the4se patriots were able to take up some of the slack after Horatio Gates' crushing defeat at Camden. The American army had largely disappeared. Later, Nathanael Greene began to rebuild a force to obstructs Lord Cornwallis' efforts.The book begins with the historical context for battle in the south. There is also a nice portrayal of Marion's youth. From his youth to adulthood, he finally created a life style that allowed him to live fairly well. When war came, he threw his lot in with the Americans. After the defeat of Gates' army, he and others began a hit and run guerilla warfare against the British. The work does a nice job of outlining his strategy, his realization that his troops would come and go as the season or some occasion called for such departure. He was also adept at finding "hideouts" and keeping them invisible (not always successful). He developed generally positive relations with nearby settlements.He developed a useful working relationship with Greene and, thus, aided the larger military strategy of Greene. The book discusses ups and downs of Marion's military career, a few failures as well as his many successes.In the final analysis, this is a satisfying work on "the Swamp Fox," including a nice analysis of his live after the Revolutionary War. . . .

Family lore had it that Francis Marion was an ancestor. Both my father and grandfather had Marion for a middle name. However, reading this book I learned that could not have been the case. My disappointment notwithstanding, this is an interesting and very flowing narrative on the Swamp Fox's exploits and their importance in our defeat of Britain in the Revolutionary War. The common narrative of that war suggests that it was won at Lexington and Concord, Bunker Hill and Valley Forge. As a southerner I was pleased to see the critical importance of South Carolina so fully recognized. Ancestor or not, Francis Marion was an important figure in the War of Independence, and it good to,see him and his efforts in South Carolina given their due.

Despite having lived in Savannah, just south of South Carolina, for most of my life and having a practically lifelong love of History I never really knew much about Francis Marion beyond the myths and legends that sprang up about him. Even then, the myths were mostly about his military activity and not the man himself. This book is a compelling story of not only Marion's military activity but about Marion himself. Knowing who he was as a person is key in understanding why he did what he is famous for and it gives you a window into his decision making, explaining why he was as successful as he was. Oller has done a wonderful job telling us about Marion the man, so in this book, we not only have a record of what he did but a much better understanding of how and why he did it. I truly enjoyed reading The Swamp Fox and heartily recommend it to anyone who's familiar with the myths and wants to know more about who Marion was and what he did.

I thoroughly enjoyed Swamp Fox. Having grown up watching the Disney series on Marion, I always wanted a book to tell me more about this fascinating figure. I was surprised at his accomplishments for a man that was barely 5 feet tall. I'm a long time reader of history; and, recently, the Revolutionary era has been a period of interest. The contrast between Washington and Marion are amazing. One at 6'2" and the other at 5'2" with engaging personality and no personality; however, they both accomplished far more than would be expected. I think Marion did far more with less resources and support than the iconic Washington. A great read!!! Enjoy!!!

having sold most of the products in the book from the first model 1964 205 right up to the 1970s it has brought back plenty memories I am now retired after around 60 years radio engineering

lots of information about Grundig satellit radios. Great collector's book. The book is filled with details on every model, again useful to collectors.

This book shows black and white photographs of the line of Grundig Satellit radios from their inception. It includes the more recent Grundig Satellit 800 which was produced by the Eton company. The newer Grundig Satellit 750 is not included in this book if you are wondering.The author, obviously well versed in these radios, presents a chronological listing of the line of Grundig Satellit radios and I thank him for that work. I am glad to own this book.I gave the book only three stars for two main reasons. The sentence structure and consequent choice of words was very distracting to me and often prevented me from understanding just exactly what the author was saying. He obviously knows his subject but English is not his first language and, because of this, the information transfer to me has gaps.The second reason is that the grayscale photographs are poorly presented. They appear grainy or as low resolution images. He does mention that if you go to his website there are higher resolution color images there. I will do that in the near future.Books, such as this one, are very useful over time. Collectors are kept informed and so are more likely to seek models that they wouldn't have known about, thus making the hobby of radio collecting interesting and active. So I would recommend you purchase this book while it is still available.I would love to read a book about the inside, behind the scenes, events that led up to the production of any or all of these radios. But that would take an author interviewing and researching those people and documents that are still available. Then, once the book was produced, it would need be critiqued by someone who spoke and wrote the language fluently for the country it was to be published in. Otherwise, too much would be lost in the translation; to 'coin' a very old phrase.By the way, I read this entire book in two relatively short sittings. I will seek out and examine the author's website soon.

Her lively and insightful account of Nasir's hajj and his stops along the way make him come to life and illustrate how his experiences shaped his philosophy and influenced his timeless writing. Dr Hunsberger's artfully written book is must reading for those curious about the development of civilization in the Middle East.

Dr Hunsberger's biography of the seminal Persian poet and philosopher is a must read for anyone curious about the state of affairs in the Middle East a millennium ago. Her exhaustive research and insight gives ballast and meaning to the personality of Nasir Khusraw as well as his travels and his journals. I highly recommend Dr Hunsberger's most-amazing book to any scholar devoted to Middle Eastern, Arabic, Persian or Islamic studies. Nasir was a dedicated scholar and so is Dr Hunsberger.

Nasir Khusraw is from Balkh Afghanistan. He went to Iran to meet with Ismaili Imam and came as a Da'ai back to Balkh. He died in Badakhshan(a province in Afghanistan). All claims to call Nasir Khusraw and Mawlana Balkhi as Irani is not true. They are all from a great nation Afghanistan.

This book answered a lot of questions that I had about the people of Badakshan and surrounding areas. Extremely readable book. Age old philosophies disclosed, still relevant after 1000 years. Great poetry and translation by Alice Hunsberger. Must read by all Rumi fans.

After reading through half of the Art of Meta Object Protocol I was finding it the book a good read but now here near the epitaph endowed by Alan Kay: "The most important book about OOP in the last decade". So a friend recommended that I read this book first to understand the importance of having a Meta Object Protocol to understand the importance of the book and he recommended me to read this book. Boy was I for a treat.This book concisely tours through the features of CLOS, generic dispatch, method qualifiers (before/after) and how to modify the generic dispatch that comes built in with CLOS! Python may have meta-classes, but without a MOP one can not modify how methods are dispatched in a portable way.A must if you are serious about Common Lisp. Don't let Paul Graham's infamous attempt to pass his own ignorance as the ignorance of others discourage you, CLOS is not a crutch for developers of lesser languages but a powerful tool that is a testament of the power of Lisp and the residue of a better world that never was.

This is a great book. It shows everything about CLOS (except the metaobject protocol, which is just mentioned but not explained in detail). The explanations are very clear and the author does every possible thing to make you understand all details (a bit too much for me, but that's a matter of taste).For anyone interested in OO programming in Common Lisp, this is an essential book.Even if you are interested in OO programming in general, this book covers a different approach, so it is nice for a comparison (in CLOS, methods do not belong to classes, and there are lots of interesting tricks that you can do that are not possible in other languages).

Amazing how this book is still so invaluable if you are serious about programming in CL. It teaches you the necessary basics you need when using the CLOS which in my opinion is a very easy way to develop real world stand-alone applications. Mix this with the functional programming features Lisp offers and it makes for very expressive and powerful software. It's funny how this continues to be be such a hidden secret.

While the introduction suggests non-Lispniks can benefit from reading this book, I would strongly suggest you can read Lisp to make sure you understand what's going on. It's a quick read (about 220 pages, excluding the appendices), the language is unfussy and clear, and the concepts are simply explained.The hoary old shape example is used briefly (perhaps it wasn't as tired in 1989), but the two main examples used in the book is a simple locking mechanism for concurrency, and multiple inheritance based disk and tape stream classes. Both example do the job well of highlighting the unique flavour of CLOS. The metaobject protocol is touched upon only briefly, but there's more than enough of the standard object protocol described for you to be getting your money's worth.Other introductory books do cover CLOS (Practical Common Lisp has a good chapter), but this is a very nice standalone volume devoted to CLOS only. Well worth reading, object (and Lisp) fans.

This is a nice "tutorial style" walk through much of the functionality of CLOS.It doesn't get into examples that are of _spectacular_ complexity, either in size or in difficulty of concept, but that strikes me as being just fine. The dialect of CLOS in use predates the final version that was released, so a few examples require a little modification to work with modern Lisp releases.If you're looking to get into the sophistication of redefining your own metaobject protocols, the MOP book is surely more suitable. But for most of us who just need to figure out what CLOS is good for, this book provides a very nice presentation of that.

I am happy for the other person who loved the book. In fact, that moved me to buy this one, along with the Baltimore area map.However...Due to a shrunken book size yet no evident increased sharpness of printing, the print is now difficult to read throughout, compared to older ADC maps I've enjoyed. I checked against sample type in Microsoft word. The font for street names now is equal to MS word's font size 6 at "life" size. The typeface is sometimes in bold, mostly not. My eyes were straining with hundreds of place names at that size, along with poorly contrasted colors throughout the pages. There was an occasional uncanny feeling of motion while looking at these maps. Some optical mayhem - for me, the pages have now become way too busy per square inch. This is a shame, as I've always admired the ADC map series.It really deserves only one star, it's truly unusable for me...but I'm giving 2 out of fondness for prior editions.But I'm returning this one, today.

This was a gift for a person who wanted a spiral-bound map of the towns of Southern Delaware. It was a tall order, and this was the only atlas I could find that fit his criteria. He got it recently and absolutely loves it, for the reasons mentioned in the title.

This is excellent especially if you are trying to learn a new sport or if you are trying to be part of a community. Refreshing. Reassures one that not everything takes a ton of money to do/learn. It is a solid reminder of the gifts of caring, sharing and being interested, and involved in the community. It is all in the making of success - successes.

This book gives an excellent glimpse into how children do when parents give their children the tools and space to be independent. The stories are a good reminder to take a step back from your child’s life. I only wish there had been more perspective from the parents point of view.

In the crazed age of "helicopter parents" there is a lesson to be learned on virtually every page, and through Karen's keen eye...an Olympian way of telling it.

The book itself is nice, hardcover and has many nice portraits. Here's the criticism:1) The book is small and that is easy to MISS when ordering it (make it clear to buyers it's tiny size book)This needs to be pointed out in BOLD letters for all potential buyers2) There is nothing more about each pic than country, date i.e. "pakistan, 2001" - really?!3) The size prevents you getting a good look at the details of the images, which is the WHOLE point of buy a hardcover book so that you can enjoy it up close. This is why I absolutely cannot recommend this book.

The portraits are very repetitive (like the photographer is somehow trying to recreate the cover photo with different people) and they are not the best quality of printing.

I am a parent that is design obsessed and have a bit of a chair collection and FINALLY there is a children's book that reflects our home/family in this unique interest. I suspect there are more of us out there. I am excited that my daughter will be able to read about some of the chairs in her nursery (Eames) and pieces we have in our home. It's never too early to teach the little ones about timeless and unique designs. I also love that this book features both designers and architects such as the late Zaha Hadid. Definitely 5 stars and I hope to see more of these types of books in the future. Buy it!

Love Jillian Tamaki's work. Not as good as This One Summer or Skim - and it's not a single complete story but a series of short stories - but worth owning nonetheless.

Jillian Tamaki's SuperMutant Magic Academy is a collection of a gorgeous and gorgeously weird webcomic. Ostensibly the story of a group of super powered/magical/gifted teenagers at a boarding school, it's most described as a mash-up between Harry Potter and the X-Men, but really it's nothing like these. It's its own strange little thing.I love that you can tell it began as an excuse for Tamaki to just let loose on the page. Tamaki is known for her crisp and clean line art that she uses for her books, but the art in a lot of SuperMutant strips -- and especially in the early ones -- are rough, almost sloppy, as if they were done quickly and in the moment. It fits the throw-away nature of the humor. The art style starts to get tighter as the strip goes on, and the light gags begin give way to darker jokes and meditations. Tamaki never chooses to permanently stay in one form or the other, though, neither in terms of art or story -- they never stop fluctuating. This gives the comic a kind of fluidity that make the strips range from the relatively straightforward to the surreal and the somber -- more or less on a strip-by-strip basis.(My favorites of these are the ones featuring Everlasting Boy, her immortal, silent character, whose strips consist of what I can only call playful existentialism.)The strips are mostly self-contained, one-shot things, although the last few dozen that end the collection feature a poignant take on the Chosen One story that is so wonderfully and beautifully done that it borders on frustrating (it is so short). It's so good that it could have been expanded to it's own graphic novel. Maybe one day.

First off, I love overall the presentation of the book. It's in black and white but tells the story beautifully. The actual paper is thick and it's fun just to have a copy - and I say this as a primarily digital reader.I love that, until the end, each page is related but individual. It makes it digestible. That said, I still read it in one day because I was interested in know what happened to the characters.The mini-stories are like most comics, lessons contained within pop culture references. You'll relate to some, fist pumping the characters, while others you'll roll your eyes at because you totally know someone LIKE THAT.When the overall story ended, I was screaming I NEED AN EPILOGUE, which the author provided. Neat little bow tied up all pretty!

We bought this book based on Amazon’s reviews for our 12 year old grandson for Christmas. He read it in one day, and when we asked him how he liked it, he replied, OK, but he didn’t like the “F” words. His mother informed us later that there were story frames depicting frontal nudity and a suicide where one of the characters puts a gun to his head and pulls the trigger. In a day of increasing suicides, especially among teens, this is deplorable. Though some may find this book to be humorous and creative, we were offended by the vulgar language, inappropriate pictures, and violence shown in such a careless manner. If this book were a movie, it would be rated “R”. Certainly not a kids book. Amazon needs to put a disclaimer on their description of the contents of this book.

I used this book for an assignment in my MLIS program and I really enjoyed it. I liked the 'Sunday Comics' style and how the use of color was done with intent. I also really enjoyed the wit and realism in a book about supermutant teenagers.This is a great book for introducing graphic novels to girls (a vastly underused medium because "comics are for boys" which is such crap) and to encourage reading in those who don't enjoy it.Fair warning: there is some cursing so maybe wait until they're 12 or 13 to offer it.

Haven't splurged on graphic novels in like a decade. Review on NPR drew my attention and immediately it went to my wish list. Then I gifted it to myself for surviving my son's fourth grade year at school. Worth it. Poignant observations of life.

I read all of the comics on the website. Then I bought the book and read them all again, plus some extra fun goodies at the end. It is a magical world full of angst and more angst that Jillian Tamaki has created. I can't wait to see what she does with the series after this or what other projects she will work on but she is definitely someone to keep an eye on.

Although the art varies in quality depending on the time of the section presented, Tamaki offers a story and a quirky set of characters that engage consistently. The book contains the occasional bit of humor too.

I love this graphic novel. The art is fantastic, and Jillian Tamaki does a great job of writing high school students who are believably optimistic, cynical, and foul-mouthed. This is maybe the best book I read in 2015: it made me laugh, cry, and want to draw comics. Highly recommended for teens and fans of YA/graphic novels..
