I came at this book as a former home winemaker, with all the sanitizing fuss and bother that goes with that. The idea that you could clean but not have to sanitize equipment and still get drinkable, quality products that wouldn't kill you was a whack across the head for me. But the more I read, the more the author's playful, what-the-heck experimental attitude appealed to me. He's made me want to dig out my carboys and airlocks and start wildly throwing things in to see what happens. I've even looked up a couple of local honey producers.In addition to his playfulness, Zimmerman's passion for all things Viking shines through in this book. He gives a good grounding in Norse mythology and culture, the history of and changes in mead making, and information on a wealth of variants that fall broadly under the "mead" category (even some on beers). Also, he's included recipes he's used and developed--although perhaps it would be better to call them guidelines, since he freely recommends departing from them at your whim.The concept and information on wild fermenting is, I think, worth the cost of the book all by itself. It had never occurred to me (why, I do not know) that yeasts abounded all around me and would be happy to leap into my primary fermenter and start having bubble-making parties. Nor had it occurred to me that the pellicle (a barrier layer) formed by top-fermenting yeasts had a protective function; I always thought it meant "batch spoiled; throw it out" (but then, I was making wine, not beer, and top-fermenting yeasts are important in beer). It's eminently sensible; nobody in neolithic times had packets of yeast, for pity's sake, but they certainly had fermented beverages.I suspect this will become a favorite gateway book for those wanting to try out mead making or take a less intimidating pathway into the world of home brewing. It's an easy, enjoyable, and absorbing read, one that takes frugality, sustainability, and responsibility seriously, and one with enough depth that you'll keep going back to it.

This is an amazing book. It inspired me to order mead and try it which opened a new world of wonder and enjoyment. It's a wonderful book that makes it possible to make mead like a Viking. We will be. Everyone has enjoyed this book. Many parts were read as a family and everyone enjoyed it. It makes sense of a natural process that has been completely complicated even though it doesn't have to be. I am also new to brewing mead. I can highly recommend the book make mead like a viking by Jeremy Zimmerman. Not only is it well written, with some interesting bits on the vikings, it includes details on how to make a staggering vatiety of meads. It is easy to follow and well worth the price tag. I came across an old blog Jeremy did and I sent him an email asking for some advice. He was super helpful and insightful. I subsequently bought the book and am very glad I did. You need to be a chemist to get involved in brewing. I was put off brewing beer because it seemed to be such complicated process. Mead can be brewed as simply or complicated as you like. This book is good not only for people new to brewing, but is also great for those interested in the vikings and gaining insight into their life that is often excluded. This book is also great for anyone looking to try brewing like our ancestors did

This book balances cleanliness with practicality, which sounds right if you want to make mead "like a Viking." Interesting background on myth and legend, the culture of "the Vikings," and history give this book a helpful context to the theme. It includes herbal and fruit notes as mead additives you may not find elsewhere, at least not as presented here. Its a unique, practical, and natural approach to mead-making. But, the author--who admits he is not (yet) a beekeeper--assumes his Viking approach will also translate to bee-keeping. As a beekeeper and mead-maker, here is the truth: if your mead goes bad, oh well. If your bees all die, you've been bad. Beekeeping is a minor part of this book, but it's in there. Make mead like a Viking. But treat your bees like a modern person, know what you're doing, and give them medicine if they need it. Five stars for the mead topic, minus one for the bad info on bees.

An inspirational romp through the world of mead (though this review may in no small part be due to the consumption of a blend of spring honey, oolong tea leaves, ground cherries, (dechlorinated) municipal water, and sourdough starter that was stirred occasionally in a covered glazed clay pot for a few days before being left in an airlocked glass vessel for some amount of time).

I have a lot of praise for this book. I have been making mead for about a year and a half, and have scored well in local competition. I wanted to add to my references on the topic, and I am glad I read this book. Really nice info about my Scandinavian history and cultural items in here, drinking games and customs along with good recipes. Great reading on just how simple it is by a guy I'd drink in a mead hall with. Skál i botn!

This is a very interesting book. In addition to data on making mead it gives a good background on traditional fermenting processes. And its a good read. After going through it I gave it to a friend that is into all sorts of fermenting food preservation methods and she found it very interesting - particularly on the sections on how to find yeast sources without ordering them.

Wonderful book. Great starter information. Makes you rethink all the sanitation so many other books preach. Just remember, we brew for the fun, for the experimentation of different ingredients, and for keeping in touch with our more ancient non sterile past. I think I will incorporate the recipes and trying brewing at the campsite or on the beach or on vacation since most times, a gallon jar takes up so little space!

About the Author

Ben Connelly is a Soto Zen priest in the Katagiri lineage training with Tim Burkett at the Minnesota Zen Meditation Center. Connelly began teaching at MZMC in 2006, was ordained in 2009, and was made shuso, or head monk, in 2012. Ben is also a professional musician and developed and leads Mindfulness in the Mountains backpacking/meditation retreats in Northwest Montana. He lives in Minneapolis, MN. Taigen Dan Leighton (foreword) is a Dharma teacher in the lineage of Shunryu Suzuki, leads the Ancient Dragon Zen Gate in Chicago, and teaches online at the Berkeley Graduate Theological Union. I've been reading widely in the Buddhist literature for over 50 years. And I've been a meditator in a number of different traditions within Buddhism for as long a time. Every once in a while I come across a book that is so clear, so heartfelt, so honest that I am spellbound reading it. I was not familar with Shitou or Ben Connelly and bought this book when I saw it on Amazon when I was looking to buy another book. I haven't gotten to the other book yet as this one has my complete attention--heart and mind.Phillip Z. Author of A Skeptic's Guide to the 12 Steps--a non-theological mediation on the 12 Steps by a recovered compulsive overeater.

I rarely rate books because of the many variables to a person liking anything at a particular time. This book is an exception. Ben Connelly has done a masterful job of bringing the reader something useful no matter where you are on the path. The reader without any background in Buddhist teachings who is wondering what it is all about will find the teachings to be remarkable clear and easy for a western mind to understand. The poem itself is a deceiving little thing with many layers of meanings, most of which have been touched on in an easy to read book. If you shave your head and have been practicing for many decades you may still find things here of interest. This a book that can be read more than one time and new treasures may be found. If after reading this book you disagree with my opinion please write and tell us why as I have read it many times and still am unable to find a reason to not like it.

Inside the Grass Hut: Living S***ou's Classic Zen Poem should appear on every Zen library bookshelf.S***ou, author of "Sandokai" ("Identity of Relative and Absolute") was a Zen monk who lived in 8th-century China. Sandokai, written in the third person, is part of the liturgy of many Zen temples. "Song of the Grass Hut" is a first-person recounting of direct experience, and perhaps less suited to formal rituals.I find "Song of the Grass Hut" and "Sandokai" have virtually the same content, but presented at different levels of granularity, if you will.I heard Ben Connelly, author of this translation, speak at ZCLA. He signed my copy afterwards. His insights into this work are well worth reading.RECOMMENDED.

I even laughed out loud a few times at how well this author sums up what it's like to be human: our foibles and frustrations. Ben Connelly offers authentic words to guide you to a peaceful place, away from the constant worry-state that we all know so well from our daily lives. He shares his own personal struggles with attaining joy and breathes new life into an ancient poem: thoughtfully, gently, and uniquely. I highly recommend this little book - I will read it over and over and find something new every time. Thank you Ben!

There is a peerless insight in this work that sees through the centuries and into the heart of a simple mountain monk. I would recommend Inside the Grass Hut to anyone who is interested in Buddhism, from beginners to experts and everyone in-between. The book speaks in a contemporary language that makes Shitou's teachings available and relevant to people in the 21st century. I loved it and plan on reading it again.

Ben Connelly's commentary on "Song of the Grass-Roofed Hut," by Shitou, provides a nice balance between monastic contemplative and lay life, with practical applications on how to merge the two, which a lot of American Buddhists attempt to do, more or less successfully.

It's 20 years too late for me to have been saved from all the malarke I put up with in graduate school, but better late than never. I just wish I'd known about this book when it came out.

A necessary read for anyone trying to understand post-modernism. Using Ockham's Razor as a guide as any scientist should, this book clearly in concise clear wording brings out the contradictions of post-modernism including an analysis of its need to reject the principle of non-contradiction.

Humorous and tragic, illuminating and infuriating. A guide for our “post-truth” times and the masturbation fantasies that neutered the left. Or, why a feminist critique of quantum gravity isn’t worth reading, or writing.

Although this is an important book it is not a very enjoyable one to read for the simple fact that the authors felt compelled to quote at length from some of the most disfigured and meaningless jumbles of words that I have ever seen sewn together in the guise of sentences.A major portion of the book is given over to reproductions of original 'postmodernist' sources that ramble for pages on end, with trifling comments by the authors on how the different scientific concepts have been misinterpreted or misused. However, the long barrage of academic verbiage is such manifest nonsense to begin with that there is little left for the sagacity of Sokal and Bricmont to say.There are only so many ways to call a fraud a fraud, so many ways to point to a syntactic confusion of adjectives and say, 'this is gibberish.'The reason for the extensive quantity of quoted material, the authors explain, is that they do not want to be accused of misrepresenting the sources, or cherry-picking their quotations. This may be an admirable intention but it does not make the situation any less painful for the reader who is forced to slog his way through the sentences.If a reader is not convinced of the absurdity of the postmodern examples within the first two sentences of a quotation, they probably so completely lack the discriminating facility that another twenty pages will not do them any more good.Much more instructive were the sections between the criticisms of the individual postmodern authors, that dealt more broadly with the roles of science and reason in the humanities and politics. Despite what other reviewers have said, there is nothing in these parts which does not seem to me to be thoroughly reasonable and correct.Most incomprehensible is how anyone could have ever taken these postmodernist authors seriously in the first place - how entire segments of the academic world could have so completely taken leave of their senses as to give even one of these imposters an academic post - let alone legions of them spanning several generations.By sheer chance, I recently ran into this comment by Jonathan Swift which seems to have some bearing on the situation:"There are certain common Privileges of a Writer,the Benefit whereof, I hope, there will be no Reason to doubt;Particularly, that where I am not understood, it shall be concluded,that something very useful and profound is coucht underneath." (1704)

Alan Sokal and Jean Bricmont analyze and critique the use, or rather misuse, of scientific language by the postmodernists. Sokal and Bricmont argue that these postmodernists use scientific concepts and terminology out of context and also target the notion of epistemic relativism (the notion that modern science is no more than a myth or social construction). I liken the postmodernists to Deepak Chopra in their use of such language as pseudo-profundity to support obscure theoretical arguments. Alan Sokal rose to notoriety in the debates around postmodernism a couple decades ago with his famous hoax article “Transgressing the Boundaries: Toward a Transformative Hermeneutics of Quantum Gravity.” As Sokal and Bricmont note, “the article was accepted and published. Worse, it was published in a special issue of Social Text devoted to rebutting the criticisms levelled against postmodernism and social constructivism by several distinguished scientists. For the editors of Social Text, it was hard to imagine a more radical way of shooting themselves in the foot.” In Fashionable Nonsense, Sokal and Bricmont study the texts of a handful of the most prominent postmodernists and social constructivists: Jacques Lacan, Julia Kristeva, Bruno Latour, Jean Baudrillard, and Gilles Deleuze. Sokal and Bricmont do a wonderful job at revealing the abuse of science present in postmodernist texts. Postmodernism is not scientific, indeed it is deeply ideological, as Sokal and Bricmont show in the epilogue while focusing on the political angle. In terms of a general critique of postmodernism, this is a classic and well worth reading. I’ll end my review of this work with one last quote from Sokal and Bricmont: “Postmodernism has three principal negative effects: a waste of time in the human sciences, a cultural confusion that favors obscurantism, and a weakening of the political left.” As postmodernism has taken over many areas in the social sciences, critiques such as this are very much necessary.

I was really back.“About [expletive deleted] time,” I grumbled. “I could have really used my help just a minute ago.”“Come on now, Vander,” I answered myself. “Do you really think it’s just a big [expletive deleted] coincidence that this is the moment I returned to my side? What changed? What is the only thing that just changed?”“The statue,” I said. “I restored Qaar’endoth.”“Yes. This shrine is the heart of the temple. This book is a very entertaining read. It's like a combination of the fun and excitement of Conan the Barbarian with the depth and detail of The Lord of the Rings, but it's all its own original story. I enjoyed the way the author made the protagonist uniquely human, and at the same time so much more. Can't wait for the next book in this epic fantasy series.

This book has interesting characters (including lovely women), awesome action, good adult scenes, and a badass protagonist. If you like any of his other books the. You will probably like this book too. If you like herems in this (dark/fantasy) genre then you will love this book.

The book was fairly well written and the story wasn't bad. I just didn't like any of the characters. Couldn't care less about them. I haven't the slightest desire to read the sequel.

Really interesting story and fun characters with well drawn personalities. I enjoyed following along in their adventure a lot, and will for sure buy the next book. I think this is the best book Logan Jacobs has written. Well done!

While fantasy isn't my highest on my priority list, this was a unique MC and a potentially very interesting world that the author has created. I'm looking forward to more.

Based on other reviews, I was worried about this book being ridiculous. This was recommended to me by my therapist and we're going over the exercises in my therapy sessions. It is a little different, but I do better with unconventional methods. Not that this book is REALLY unconventional; it just uses a different approach. Going through each developmental stage helped me to locate where the disconnect happened and how I can fix it.

I have shared this book with people that I love deeply because I want them to experience the same joy and fulfillment that I have since reading Homecoming and and participating in the activities outlined in this Homecoming. I'm so thankful for John Bradshaw sharing his personal experiences with the world. This book has set me free to be me, finally. Thank God!

The first half of the book is terrific and very eye-opening, and mind opening. The second half of the book is good if you want to actually follow along and practice all of the procedures. This part was a little overwhelming for me. But overall, the book reveals just how messed up millions of people are because they didn't have a good "we" before trying to create an "I".

This is the second time around for me reading this book which initially saved my life. The inner child work is key to successful recovery for me. It helped me change the destructive patterns of behavior that challenged my quest for happiness. I re-wrote my inner script and stopped substituting actors!! Thanks John Bradshaw!

This is my first review ever. To those commenting negatively about the book - all I can say is that you must not have been raised in a dysfunctional family, thus, not understand the deep wounding that this might have left on one's soul. I like the book and I like the exercises. Yes, he makes you revisit parts of your life you may not want to revisit and work through feelings that are scary and leave you incapacitated. I believe the truth in the statement "The only way to is through". I am seeing slow but progressive change in myself as a result of this book. I highly recommend to anyone who's had a rough childhood.

Even though it's written in the '70's and a few words are not used any more like "squelched" and "strokes", it is, in my opinion, extremely and deeply connective to awaken loving compassion in oneself for one's own past selves with trauma. I'm using it for that and it is helping me to keep aware of the healing process while doing other things most days. It describes something called "making an anchor" to connect a positive experience or how you would like an old trauma experience to be re-written or remembered. Nowadays we have EMDR which may do the same thing and perhaps quicker. One thing bothered me: not being ready to read his description of a sexual abuse scenario which came at the bottom of a page I was reading. But once I knew where it was, I could skip it. All the rest is an invaluable treasure trove for learning about the developmental stage tasks we all have to learn as we go on and what to do if we missed any, including healing ways that empower us now.

Brilliant, practical, timeless. Bradshaw covers the stages of early childhood development in a unique way, so that one can easily identify one's own interrupted development at different stages. Bradshaw then offers a simple way to come home to oneself, by embracing, protecting and nurturing the Wonder child within.

The writing is just bad, info could be organized better, informal tone for a textbook. The general lack of clarity is the biggest problem.Ex: "Under stressful conditions, some bacterial species can produce cells that stop dividing (remain in the B period of the cell cycle) but maintain a very low rate of metabolism. These, so-called persister cells, are spontaneously and naturally produced during the log phase of growth and are not the result of unfavorable environmental change"This doesn't make sense, it states a general phenomenon and then gives an example that doesn't fit. If persister cells are produced under favorable conditions, how is that an example of cells that stop dividing under stressful conditions? It doesn't go on to clarify and there are confusing statements like this throughout the book. I googled persister cells, and asked my professor about this too, apparently there is disagreement on whether stressful conditions directly cause dormant cells to form. The textbook should state that there are opposing thoughts on this, not juxtapose the 2 opposing thoughts with no explanation.

I love the Comfort Food Café. I've completely fallen in love with this series, its characters and of course, the cosy setting. Although I am sad that this is the last installment in the series, I think it was the right decision from the author, to end on a high note. Through the series, we have read about 6 amazing women, I have cheered for them and I have shared their joy at finding their own happy endings, and they will for sure keep a little piece of my heart.But let's talk about this story now. It focuses on Auburn, who moved to Budbury a few month ago to help her sister Willow care for their mother. We don't know much about her, other than she has quite a wild past. I was really curious to find out more about her before Budbury, especially as quite a big secret is revealed quite early in the story.This soon creates a lot of problems in her life and affects her new relationship. As we got to know more about this secret, I really had no idea how her story was going to end, as not everything was as black and white as it first looked like. And although I didn't always think that Auburn made the best choices, I liked that she was aware of her faults and always tried to be honest with everyone.But my favourite part of the story was the wedding (and all the preparations leading up to it) of two of my favorite characters in the series, it was a great example of how lovely and supportive this community is and how they are aways ready to help each other. I loved catching up with all the regular characters. It was the perfect end to a gorgeous series. The Comfort Food Cafe might not be a real location but it has become a haven to escape to for a few hours, where there's always good food and lovely people.Rating: 4.5 stars
