I wish I had read this book when my husband and I were raising our children, it is the best non-parenting, parenting book I have ever read. The contrast of pushing too hard and wrecking lives in the first chapter sets the stage nicely for how to do it right. This book deserves a bag filled with cheers, and if you don’t live in Norwich, you will have to read it to know what that is all about.
A deep look at parenting culture in this small town, close to Dartmouth (New Hampshire),in relation to sports' achievement, life and personal growth of the athletes. As a former Vermont resident and Olympics fan,I found this review timely and personal in regards to the people interviewed. Definitely worth a read, especially as a parent of active youths. This is excellent especially if you are trying to learn a new sport or if you are trying to be part of a community. Refreshing. Reassures one that not everything takes a ton of money to do/learn. It is a solid reminder of the gifts of caring, sharing and being interested, and involved in the community. It is all in the making of success - successes.
This book gives an excellent glimpse into how children do when parents give their children the tools and space to be independent. The stories are a good reminder to take a step back from your child’s life. I only wish there had been more perspective from the parents point of view.
Karen is a master storyteller. In "Norwich" she turns the town's "takes a village" approach of introducing sport to its children into high art. In the crazed age of "helicopter parents" there is a lesson to be learned on virtually every page, and through Karen's keen eye...an Olympian way of telling it.
as kid who grew up in Norwich this was a must read for me. I also bought copies for my sister and my my mom. It was well written and fun to read.
Loved this book! I grew up in Norwich so it was great to hear the stories of so many athletes I went to school with.
