Leo Marriott is a retired Air Traffic Controller who has had more than thirty books published on his specialist subjects: naval warfare and aviation. He is an experienced pilot and accomplished aerial photographer.Simon Forty was educated in Dorset and the north of England before reading history at London University’s School of Slavonic and East European Studies. He has been involved in publishing since the mid-1970s, first as editor and latterly as author. Son of author and RAC Tank Museum curator George Forty, he has continued in the family tradition writing mainly on historical and military subjects including books on the Napoleonic Wars and the two world wars. Recently he has produced a range of highly illustrated books on the Normandy battlefields, the Atlantic Wall and the liberation of the Low Countries with co-author Leo Marriott.

If you want a book with high quality photograph reproductions you should try another book.This is a book of maps, historical photos and recent photos of the D-Day sites. Most pages are 3/4 or more photo and map with the remaining portion of the page being caption. The captions and explanations are very good and add a lot of value. Many of the historical photographs are juxtaposed with a modern aerial photo of the same area. The maps and historical B/W photos are reproduced well here but the recent color images are dull and the aerial photos are sometimes poorly focused.The D-Day sites themselves are well worth a visit. Two years ago I visited the D-Day beaches and cemetery with a tour and on a blustery April day many French school kids and families were visiting the sites.

This book makes the D-Day battle sights come alive, at least in this readers opinion. We have all seen the black and white photos, and newsreels. But viewing these sights in color really brings them alive, color makes all the difference. It is still amazing that these brave men managed to establish a foothold, and drive inland in the face of determined german resistance. The germans knew that the cross channel invasionhad to come, they prepared for it , and it still suceeded, in spite of Rommel's best efforts. This book is well worth buying for anyone interested in WW2, it adds another dimension to this stirring story. JRV

My wife and I have been to several WWI and WWII battlefields and national cemetaries. This book has great photos and is an easy read. For those of you that have been to Normandy, it will vividly bring back your visit. For those who have not gone, this book will give you a decent overview of the invasion's successes and failures. It has a lot of information as well: Most Americans do not know that there were more British and Canadian troops in the invasion than American; that 80% of the ships that took part were British and that aside from Eisenhower, the four other top commanders under him including his top deputy and those commanding land, sea and air operations were all British. This book honors all who fought and died and survived during the invasion and is worthy of reading.

There’s a lot here. The research looks to be impeccable—gratefully without the usual—look how wonderfully the Commonwealth troops performed while the poor Americans foundered. Getting harder and harder to find that as history is slowly rewritten.The passages are apparently backed by informative photographs. The problem is they scale poorly if you try to enlarge them, to even a small degree—no big shock for 70 year-old prints. And the captions get difficult to follow since they’re rarely on the same page as their photograph, but sometimes are—back & forth etc.However, since it’s electronic, you’re able to take screenshots of everything you’d like to see and then use it as a very handy guide—as I plan to during my 75th anniversary visit next year. Should be much easier than the books with notes I used for the 70th anniversary visit 5 years back.If this is your only source with no visit planned, definitely buy the hard copy.

Bought as a companion book to After the Battle Then and Now book on Normandy. It did not have the heft or volume of those books and that was why I could not give it more stars. Some of the shots from above are fantastic, There just not enough of them

I like "Then and Now" photographs and the effort the current photographer tries to shoot from the same point of view to compare spaces and time was lacking in this book which I find would have it easier to envision the changes of the battle fields terrain and landmarks. Perhaps this was not the intention of the author to present this form of photographic detail. On in all if you are a D-Day scholar and buff you will get enjoyment from adding this book in your collection..

My brother has always been fascinated with WWII. Our dad fought in the European Theater through the whole war so we have heard many stories. Dad parachuted into the Normandy frey. My brother and his family will be going there this year and he was so happy to get this book. Thank you.

"No food translates into more carefree fun than a singing dish of queso fundido," declares the author. Following the lead-in, a paragraph provides the "Traditional Benchmark," wherein the ideal version of the dish is captured. Thus, readers learn what makes the perfect flan or Pozole (Pork and Hominy Stew). Next come a few words on "When to Think of These Recipes"DChiles Rellenos when you're pulling out the stops, Tamales for hanging out with the gang. A third paragraph offers "Advice for American Cooks," such as what peppers you can substitute in your Adobado Chicken. Then, at last, come the recipes. Bayless provides both a traditional and contemporary version of most dishes. Among his many happy surprises are a relatively unknown "street-style" enchilada, which is dipped in chile sauce and quick fried, and a grilled Cactus Salad. I am a homesick Texan in a place where Tex-mex does not exist. Real Mexican cooking and Tex-mex are two different things, but they are similar enough that Rick Bayless's books are just what I needed.I am by no means an expert cook, but the directions are easy to follow. I haven't made every recipe in the book, but of the recipes I HAVE made, I haven't not regretted a single one. There are some that have become standard dishes in my kitchen. I highly recommend this book.

Chef Rick Bayless is a celebrity chef who is widely known as being an authority on Mexican cuisine and culture. This cook book was written as a companion to a television series that was aired. The cook book peers in to various aspects of Mexican cuisine and is very informative and easy to follow. Throughout the cook book, Chef Bayless fully examines each recipe, sometimes providing his own variations based on modern interpretations. I like how Chef Bayless presents the information for each recipe. He makes educated suggestions of when to serve the dishes and tips for work that can be done ahead. I further like the fact that there is an "FAQ" kind of section where answers are provided giving the reader more information. There are pictures throughout the book but not in a way that they are intrusive or take away from the amount of information that is being given. The pictures range from photos of finished dishes, images of traditional Mexican ingredients, and cultural shots that give a further glimpse into Mexican cuisine and lifestyle. The recipes in the book include starters, light meals, soups, stews, entrees, side dishes, and desserts. There is a brief section toward the end of the book that discusses beer and tequila. One of my favorite parts of the cook book is a Mexican ingredient glossary at the end that not only shows pictures of the different ingredients being discussed but also gives the reader tips as to uses for the ingredient, where to find them, how to choose them and how to store them. Overall, this book is very informative, engaging and is very easy to read and follow. Luckily, I purchased this book used and it arrived quickly and in great condition. If you are at all familiar with Chef Rick Bayless from watching him on television you will know his friendly and positive demeanor and this book does an excellent job of capturing that same spirit in its presentation.

Good choice of recipes, appealing format, nice color photos, and good description of Mexican traditional cooking methods.Cons:Description of how to make dishes is confusing and often needs to be read several times. It could just be me, however I have a lot of other cook-books and have never encountered this problem. Again, nothing major, just think the descriptions could have been a little better organized for following an easy step-by-step process.

I am of Mexican descent and I don't even know most of the recipes, I don't even cook this good with delicious being extra.Rick is so knowledgeable, you would think he was mexican. I have tried so many of his recipes, and they are all mouth watering. Mexico should get real and give him citizenship because he truly represents the best of mexican cooking.I wish he would get into making mexican candies such as the dulce de calabasa, dulce de coco, leche quemada...these are a lost art, but I just know that once Rick starts making them, the tradition will live on.Thank you Ricardo for a job well done. And even if i don't cook the recipe, the pictures are so delicious looking that my mouth starts watering and makes me want to be there. By the way, your spanish is not bad. I bought this book for myself to get a tamale recipe that it contained. I had eaten them at my son's home and they were the best I'd ever eaten. I purchased this book as a gift for my daughter, who had also eaten the same tamales I did, and who wanted the recipe also. The thought of tackling Belgium without Rick Steves was daunting when we booked our flights earlier this year. Thankfully, this 1st Edition was released and available on Amazon! With overnight shipping, it arrived just 12 hours prior to boarding our flight on April 2.Rick's recommendations have accompanied me through 12 countries (and many major cities) since I started vacationing in Europe on and off since 2005. These books have NEVER ....repeat NEVER....steered me wrong. My journeys were planned using the always-reliable guidance; my travels were enhanced by information that helped me be a bolder adventurer; and my experiences were richer for the treasures revealed by entering "Through the Back Door".And, with this guide, he's done it again!

In the opinion of this frequent traveler, Rick Steves's guides are the ONLY ones you need if you're going anywhere in Europe! In the past, I've bought two or three guidebooks for the same country before I felt like I had all of the information I needed. Once I found the Rick Steves books, I have never bought another vesion of any travel guide again. The Rick Steves guides are so thorough, that the only way you could get better, more complete guidance would be to have Rick or one of his tour guides along with you.Each guide takes you through the country city by city, including what to do before you leave home, what to pack, where to stay, where to eat, and what to see. He'll tell you what sights will need advance booking or reservations. There are walking guides for cities, as well as detailed walking tours for museums, churches, and other major sights. For the history lovers, there are beautifully written sections to educate you about what you're seeing, which makes your experience measurably more meaningful. The information is so detailed that Rick tells you things like, "When exiting the front of the train station, turn to your left and walk 20 yards to the bus stop. Take bus #11 to go directly to the castle." It doesn't get any easier to plan your sightseeing than that! And of course, there are simplified city maps to help you navigate once you get there, usually marked with his suggested walking tour route.Other helpful sections include tips about money, shopping, climate, and transportation. But one of my favorite parts of Rick's books is that he tells you how to really see a place by becoming what he calls a "temporary local." In other words, don't miss the real heart of the country by seeing only the well known tourist hot spots. He tells you how the locals live and how you can have that experience, too.Finally, each book includes a list of survival phrases and words to help you communicate while you're there. As Rick says, and I can confirm, the locals will very much appreciate your attempt to use their language instead of just assuming that they speak English. Don't worry about your pronunciation - just try it!There is so much valuable information in the Rick Steves guides that I'm sure I'm leaving something out. In my opinion, they have no equal!

I used the sections on Bruges intensively, and also used the sessions on Ghent and Brussels. They were helpful, though I was sad about the omission of the "Jerusalem" church and home from the list of sites, as I would have made it my business to get there if I had known about it.Two things bothered me using the guide on the Kindle:One was the extensive section about the Museum of Torture right in the middle of the Bruges guide. I had to keep flipping through to get to the parts I needed, and I had to see this long part about torture, with some kind of picture, many times. I did not enjoy seeing it even once. I don't think these museums should be encouraged, but at any rate, why does it need so much space in the guidebook?Second thing was that on the Kindle the city maps, because they are intended to be on facing pages, are just half maps, and really not useful at all unless you are trying to navigate between two places which are due north or due south of each other.

Used Rick Steve’s book while in Belgium. I god sent. The info provide was worth its weight in gold, especially train info. We made the mistake of doing our bookings in Amsterdam. If you want to ride the Thaley make your reservations at least two weeks in adavanced, even that might not be enough. We wanted a early Thaley to Schiphol, but found out it was sold out. We took the regular train. Due to mechanical problems we had to change trains twice. Consequently we got to the air port 90 min b 4 boarding. Wanted to be at Schlphol earlier to do some duty free shopping. Order the book early, read it and plan plan plan!!!

Thick book that does a great job covering your quick need to knows in Belgium. Loved that it went over many cities and their details. Helped me yok look more into what we had time for and could do. Remember to not only use his restaurant and bar guides. Some have become touristy and there are better places around!

Fabulous as always! Thank you Rick!! Used for 3 weeks this summer. As a medically fragile traveler, this helped us decide what to do, what to spend my energy on. While not written for that purpose, it helped tremendously. Followed suggestion of ripping out just the pages for countries we were visiting. Hard for this book lover to do, but helped keep things light.

Typical Rick Steves quality guide book. We have been purchasing his European books since 1999 and they are helpful and the print size and color is easily readable. We don't pay much attention to his lodging and restaurant recommendations anymore but his descriptions of sites to see, choices of places to visit on a schedule and other basic information are very good. When we plan a trip to Europe our first purchase is his book but we always do so with other books and especially internet research.

Rick Steves is the best travel book out there. It is not even embarrassing carrying this around because you get to meet other Rick fans. My daughter and I just returned from the Netherlands and Belgium and these were constantly with us. We especially like Rick's philosophy about traveling--it's not about shopping, but about gaining experiences. His suggestions on where to eat were especially helpful. And the walking tours in each city were terrific.

Do not buy this ebook version for Amazon Kindle fire devices and definitely do not buy this if your device is smaller than a tablet.This ebook is a low resolution scanned copy of the textbook; every figure is nearly impossible to read and the images have shadow over the text so you can't clearly see what they are referring to. Even zooming in on the images doesn't help because they will still be blurry and will have shadows over them.Reading the actual text is difficult, it is so small that it hurts my eyes, I have to zoom in on every page to read it, then zoom out so I can get to the next page, then zoom in again to read. My vision is not bad and I have never had this much difficulty reading an ebook before today. I opened a few different ebooks just to make sure I wasn't crazy, and I saw that other books are mobile compatible (they have text optimized for the device size, the font size is larger and the images are clear (no shadows)).Send yourself a sample and compare it to an actual electronic book. Good ebooks are mobile compatible and won't strain the reader's eyes the way this book will. The only reason I chose to the ebook version vs getting the hardcopy is to save space on my bookshelf. I wasn't expecting this level of frustration with the quality of the ebook and I am disappointed in Amazon for continuing to sell this ebook.

I had to get this book for class and I absolutely hate it with a passion! First off the MSDN guide for the Microsoft website is out of date in this book. The steps in the lab aren't accurate at all. And I wish there were more/better examples in the chapter. I think after this semester my teacher will definitely be revising the textbook for this course.

I love it! I will never let go of it!!!

This book is so full of grammatical and logical errors it isn't even funny. Even our instructor hates the book.
