The book begins with general information regarding herbal medicine including how herbal medicine developed, herbal traditions from different parts of the world, and a history of the origins of herbal medicine. It contains information about more than 550 plants including both pharmacological information as well as the lore and traditional uses of plants.The author estimates that of the 500,000 plants on earth, about 10,000 are used medicinally on a regular basis (Chevallier 55). The book provides detailed information on those plants which have been carefully researched for safety and efficacy are used most frequently. Entries include information regarding the cultivation, natural habitat, key actions and preparations of the plant, cautions and self-help uses. The book is generously illustrated with many full color photos and illustrations. Some of the items included are common food items including, for example, thyme, nutmeg, peppermint, asparagus, and oats. Many other plants will be much less familiar. LOTS of helpful info. More info than you would probably ever need! Reading about herbal medicine history was interesting. I wish that the plants were organized by common name instead of scientific name. It's tedious to look up the plant than I want. The font in this book is too light and too small, however that may be necessary considering the amount of info contained on each page...or maybe I need new glasses!

I'd heard the author was very good, but I still was a bit skeptical since many herbalism books are terrible or a little sketchy on their research. I was very happy when I opened it up and saw the level of detail in this book. It's a very good reference guide from what I can tell. I haven't poured over the pages much at this point, but honestly, it looks fantastic if you need something that covers many, many herbs and their effects on the body.

Excellent book. Gives a broad range of plants. Not an in depth kind of book, but works great for quick look ups of plants not listed in many other books. I order herbs from all over, so this helps me find what I need, then I can do further research if I choose.

It's a good "first book" for those interested in commodities, but it's about a mile-wide in breadth and maybe an inch deep, so even complex topics, instead of being clearly explained and saying "do more research to understand X better" you instead just get the basic, dumbed down explanation, which misleads those newer to commodity markets into thinking they grasp at least 50% of the topic. In reality, it teaches 100% of the basic concept, and ignores 95% of the complex parts. All commodities aren't thought of, analyzed, traded, stored or leveraged the same - and the book doesn't really go into depth on this, which is pretty critical.

More of a book to try to convince you to use a full service broker, which the author is. This book did not and will not help me become a better trader, but is useful as a general reference book in some aspects.

This book by Carley Garner introduces you to the world of commodities trading in the futures market. She begins by making a descripction of the rally in 2007 and 2008 and the crash of the commodities market in 2008-2009, that caused hugh loses to many traders.The book contains not only an explanation of the markets and how they work, but also some very interesting chapters on how to select a broker if you want to risk your money in these markets. Then she explains the different type of orders that operate in relation to the futures markets. Finally she does an overview of the different commodity markets. One of the most relevant aspects of this book is that Ms. Garner has been a broker for many years and knows first hand the operation and risks inherent to these markets.She explores also the emotional aspects of commodities trading, and how many people excel in simulated trading using sensible strategies, but when real money is involved they tend to 'follow the pack'. A very interesting insight into waht is required to become a mature trader.Something that you will not find in this book are the kind of 'magic' - 'win always' recipes. If those were true, all traders would become rich in a couple of years.I think this book is a must to anyone who wants to risk his or her savings in the futures and options markets. The most important phrase in the book is "The typical trader is a net loser". This book convinced me that futures and options trading in the commodities markets is not for me. That is already a plus and a good reason to purchase this book.

Let me start by saying that the book is great and I am glad to have read it. A newcomer to commodities like myself will have many questions answered as well as discover much about the field that they may not have known. I highly recommend it for all looking for a first book.The only draw back that I found at times, which may be due to the nature of the topic, was that there are some instances where the author assumes some knowledge already. At least it comes across that way. Most of the time as you get further in the reading things will explain themselves but then you will have to go back (possibly) to fully understand what was read previously. This is not a common thing in the book, but it does happen.I don't believe overall that this should affect one's decision to purchase because like all such books it is not good enough to simply read, but rather to study. Going back and re-reading parts to gain a better understanding is what you should be doing anyway.

This, to me, reads more like an ad for the broker who wrote it than anything. She seems to think everything is too complicated for a trader to do on her own. Hire a broker to do it for you~ Pfffhhhht! And although it was written fairly recently, it had misinformation in it about commodity markets not being electronic. These days Think or Swim carries all that the retail trader could ever need. And I bet there are other electronic platforms that do too. So, I would find another book, for a "first" book. Very disappointed. I have bought her other book on Commodities and not read it yet, but I promise to keep an open mind.

The author does a very good job of describing the world of futures trading. This is not a book about how to trade futures. Instead it is an introduction to how you would go about trading futures. If you are curious about trading futures, read this book. It will give you insight into whether futures trading is something you might want to consider.

This is an excellent book for someone who is interested in learning the very basic fundamentals of trading . I personally teach & tutor Futures trading on a limited bases and I recommend this book to someone who has zero knowledge of trading but has a desire to learn . Very good basic information !

Most reviewers of "Life after Life" have taken the main character's multiple deaths and resurrections as evidence that the novel is about second chances, the option of having a new life after the previous one has been snuffed out. I read it differently. On one occasion Sylvie Todd, the sharp-witted mother of the protagonist Ursula Todd, calls her daughter "Cassandra," referring to the mythical figure who had the gift of delivering dire prophecies that nobody listened to. Accordingly, I viewed the multiple calamities that befall Ursula - umbilical strangling, drowning, political assassination, rape, marital homicide - not as "what ifs?" imposed by a post-modern tease of a storyteller, but as projections of a mind uncannily attuned to the precariousness of living. How Ursula manages to create her own, authentic life in the face of such mind-bending catastrophes is the real story of Atkinson's oddly constructed ode to a very human heroism, and it is the beacon that leads the reader through the maze of dead ends. Set largely against the two greatest (real) disasters of the 20th century - the two world wars - Ursula's journey is an often scintillating one, deftly told. But, at some 500 pages, it's an awfully meandering trek, requiring you to maintain a balance between empathy for Ursula's trials and awareness of being manhandled by a relentlessly clever author. The experience is both exhilarating and wearying. Whether it's worth it in the end is a question that Atkinson leaves entirely up to you.

This fascinating novel is based on the premise that death isn't necessarily forever. The central character, Ursula Todd, is born on a snowy night in England in 1910. In the first account of this, she dies almost immediately, strangled by the umbilical cord with no doctor or midwife to help her mother through the birth. In the next account, the doctor has arrived, the umbilical cord is cut, and the baby lives. And so on and so forth -- Ursula's life follows a different pattern each time, which leads to her death but then to a new pattern. The book is full of philosophical questions, but they do not intrude; it works brilliantly as a novel. The narrative carries the reader right along with the strongest of hooks: what will happen next (time)? The descriptions of time and place are haunting, particularly those of World War II London. The characters are rounded, and some engaged at least this reader emotionally. And they are diverse -- Ursula, of course, is not the only one whose life follows a different pattern in her various iterations, and it becomes almost a game to figure out what has changed for which character. The ending is mysterious, but that is appropriate a novel that explores so many possibilities.

This novel is not for everyone. It does not follow a linear story line. It jumps from one period to another in the life of an English woman, Ursula Todd, from her birth in 1911, through WWII and into the post-war period. Moreover, it jumps not only from one period to another but from one version of Ursula's life to another. In one version, she remains single and stays in England and spends the harrowing war years in London. But in another, she goes to Germany, marries, has a child and, victims of the post-war suffering and starvation in Germany, kills herself and her young daughter. The book, in fact, opens with Ursula in Germany. As a friend of Eva Braun, she is trusted by Hitler, and tries to kill him. There are many examples of double, sometimes triple, versions of events in Ursula's and in her family's life. Everyone will have their own interpretation of the meaning of this book. It certainly precipitates thought and discussion. It's about possibilities, and the role of choices, and the role of chance in life. It's also about the power of the novelist to lure the reader -- and perhaps herself -- into that "willing suspension of disbelief" that critics talk about. The interweaving of many stories makes us understand the power that stories have over us. This all sounds very trendy, but the book is fascinating -- if the reader can tolerate some perplexity.

Best of all, it's funny! And that is quite a feat considering the bulk of the story takes place during the brutality of World War II, especially the Blitz in London.This book is a testament to author Kate Atkinson's imagination, storytelling creativity and literary genius. Brief summary and review, no spoilers.This book is narrated by two different women at different points in time. The first part of the novel takes place during WWI and tells the story of Sophie LeFevre, who owns and helps run a bar/cafe in a small town outside of Paris. The town has been taken over by Germans and the locals have all suffered from deprivation and oppression at the hands of their captors.Sophie and her sister Helene are both concerned about their husbands who are French soldiers and possibly in a prison camp or worse. Sophie's husband is a talented and fairly well-known artist named Eduoard, and Sophie's most prized possession is the portrait he did of her shortly after they first met. She has it prominently displayed on the bar wall. When the German Kommandant sees the portrait, he becomes enthralled with it and with Sophie as well. What will happen to Sophie and her family and to their town if the Germans don't leave? And what will Sophie do in order to save her husband and see him again?The story then moves to the present times and we meet Olivia (Liv) Halston, a woman who's been in a state of depression and grief since the death of her young husband 4 years earlier. Liv is struggling financially and emotionally but things seem to take a turn for the better when she becomes attracted to a man named Paul McCafferty. Paul works for an agency that tries to give priceless paintings stolen by the Nazi's back to their original owners, and when he spots Sophie's portrait in Liv's home, he feels he must take action.I really enjoyed the WWI parts of this book, which pretty much make up the majority of the first half. I thought this part of the book was stellar and I loved reading about Sophie and the descriptions of her life and of the conditions during the occupation were vivid and educational.My problem came when we come to the present day. As believable as I found Sophie and the decisions she had to make - I had the opposite reactions to Liv. I didn't buy into her character and found myself often annoyed rolling my eyes at her actions and thoughts. I don't necessarily have to like the characters to like a book, but I think we were supposed to like Liv and at times I just didn't. I also had trouble buying into the relationship between her and Paul.My biggest problem, and this is without giving away any spoilers, is that I don't like books that try to wrap up all the loose ends with a bow. I thought the book could've had a stronger impact without this and I thought there were way too many coincidences and convenient twists along the way.So this was a mixed bag for me; I loved the WWI bits but was frustrated by the present-day storyline.

I made a mistake when I started reading this book. I made the mistake of starting on a Saturday morning. Before I knew it, half of my Saturday was gone because I finished it in a little over four hours. I have loved each of the Jojo Moyes books I have read previously and she does not disappoint. This was a tale of two women: Sophie, who was struggling during WWI with her husband at war and then nearly a hundred years later Liv, who was still grieving the loss of her husband. I was so incredibly engrossed with Sophie's story. This author does a great job with historical fiction. Somehow I could imagine very clearly this small town of Paris in 1916 dealing with the occupation of German soldiers. But I had to take a star away because of Liv's story. I really wasn't as engaged and she kind of annoyed me a bit. I could not put the book down though because I was so anxious to see what happened to Sophie. I won't give away any spoilers, but I do think the author took the easy way out with that one. There were too many coincidences and twists that basically had everything wrapped in a neat bow at the end. I think it was actually too neat. But I loved the story and I love happy endings so I still gave this book four stars. I can't wait to read the author's other novels!

The Girl You Left Behind is a very sweet story. Like all of JoJo Moyes' books, I enjoyed every page and devoured it in a very short period of time. Having said that, I think some of her other works are more compelling.There are two parts to The Girl You Left Behind--the story about Sophie, a woman running a bar/hotel, in small-town France, during World War I; and the story about Liv, a widow struggling to survive following the unexpected death of her husband, in current time. What unites these two woman who are living 100 years apart? Liv is now the proud owner of a painting made in Sophie's likeness, which was painted by Sophie's husband, a Matisse-inspired artist.The problem? The two stories don't really mesh. It's truly like reading two different novels. Beyond that, there are several little piddly things that really bothered me. For example, a big deal is made about a baby pig during Sophie's section of the book. They hide it from the German soldiers so it will grow and provide sustenance for them and their neighbors. The problem? Where in the world are they getting the food to feed this pig? These people are surviving on some atrocity called black bread, a food which likely tasted as atrocious as it sounded. There were no leftovers. And it's not as if the pig could roam free, finding truffles in the yard. It had to be hidden from the Germans.That's one of many minor oversights I found in this book. Am I being picky? Perhaps. But if an author chooses to write historical fiction, accuracy equals success. Anything less isn't acceptable to readers.Overall, if you've enjoyed Moyes' previous books, you'll enjoy this one as well. It's worth reading.3.5 stars rounded to 4.

This is a great book with great pictures. My son is 3.5 & loves this book. It tells the basic story of Channukah.I read in other reviews re the menorah in the beginning of the story being different than the one at the end of the story. The reason for this: the menorah in the beginning of the book has 7 candle slots, as used at temple mount in Jerusalem back in those times. This illustration is a clear depiction of what was really used. The modern day menorahs-the ones we use for celebrating Chanukkah have 9 spots for candles...this is because the miracle of oil burning for 8 days. 8 candles representing the the 8 days & the 9th (in the center) is the shemash....the candle we use to light all the other candles with.I recommend this book to help explain the story of Chanukah to little ones.

This book was the perfect book to introduce our three and almost-two year-old sons to the story behind Hanukkah. It was a very simply told story, the pictures were bright and winsome, the boys really enjoyed the metre of the poem, and it reminded me of some of my favorite books from my own childhood. It was just the right speed and length to tell an interesting story yet end before our kids lost interest. The pages move quickly and the pictures grab a little boy's attention.We have read it several times already and have had it only five days. I can see us reading this book several times every hanukkah until our sons are preteens and this book has whet their appetites for a more in depth telling of the story (if that doesn't happen before then).This book does not discuss hanukkah traditions, so if you want a discussion of menorahs, dreidels, and latkes, go to another book. This does, however, tell the story of the Maccabees and the miracle of the oil in a fun and inspiring way. Would definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting to teach their young children about the Maccabees :)

This little book is great for introducing kids to solid Torah principles, including armed resistance to tyranny. The Tribe could use a well rounded view of the chag, and this book definitely balances trust, obedience and righteous action in a child-friendly presentation.

My 5 yo, 4 yo and 2 yo LOVE this book. We got it in 2015 and it never went away into the holiday box with the other books. We read it all year long non stop and my kids know it word for word. Story flows great and is not annoying to read after 50 times! It's educational and my 5yo was telling her friends about king Antiochus (sp?) and educating them on what Hanukkah is all about. This year we gave it to our friends for Hanukkah!

This is a cute little rendition of the Hanukkah story. It includes the legend of the oil that lasted 8 days, which is debated nowadays, but if you're worried about that, it's easy enough to tell the kids we aren't sure if that part really happened. My favorite part, which makes me tear up every time I read it at the bottom of almost every page, is the line about only a few doing what's right. What a wonderful legacy to build in our children! It's a fun, lively, rhythmic tale that we'll enjoy for years to come.

This was a gift for young family members. The illustrations are very nice. I didn't read, but could tell they would enjoy this very much. And I was correct!! When my great nephew opened this song with Christmas gifts, he was VERY happy. Perhaps, someday, Hanukkah Will be celebrated by him :)

Such a cute book! Perfect for my 2 and 4 year. Has a great message in it that it only take a few people to stand up and do the right thing. A message that crosses over beyond Hanukkah. The art is very fun for the children. We read it three times the first night.

This book is an exciting re-hashing of the first Hanukkah. The kids love the graphic novel type illustrations that are full of action. I read this every year to my Pre-K class to introduce the holiday. My one drawback is that the book is written in poetry that is a bit above their heads. I'm still giving it 5 stars though, because the pictures are so good that I don't mind paraphrasing the poetry.

This LSAT logic game book is invaluable- it is absolutely the most useful LSAT book I have read thus far (and I’ve read plenty of them). I wish I found it earlier. This is the “secret weapon” to logic games that I have been searching for. The methods in this book will give you an edge over most of the other students taking the LSAT as it truly does provide “everything you need to know” about logic games, and with these methods the author instills confidence to tackle games with no fear. Buy this book- it will be to your advantage!

This book is the Bible for LSAT studying. I take this book with me everywhere I go. It is very simplistic to understand and gives the foundation of how the logical games are applied to practicing law. The author Brad has a great sense of humor throughout the entirety of this book which allows me to remain calm and do a better job. I recommend this book to anyone desiring to attend law school!

I purchased this book to help me prepare for the LSAT logic games section. After reading various reviews, I thought I'd give it a try. Unfortunately, this book did not serve me well.The book lacks order and structure, in my opinion, and is extremely difficult to follow. I found myself often having to play detective to put together what I assumed the writer was trying to convey. I literally had to put information together in a format that was understandable, but still the methods were not successful for me personally.Worst part was some of the methods used (in my case specifically winner/loser games, which are also referred to as grouping - in/out games) were not common and when utilizing various sources to check my answers, I had no way of confirming what I learned from the book, which equates to a frustrating experience. Now I understand why people prefer to stick with one company for courses or books because consistency matters and being able to check work with similar methods matters even more.Im considered non-traditional as I have work and other personal responsibilities to tend to daily. It took me about three months to get through the book and when I created charts etc. to help me tackle the games I found that I was stuck on the grouping, in/out games and lacking with the ordering games as well (although, I feel more confident about ordering games because the methods in this book do help with this type of game). I reread the book (at least relevant parts the 2nd and 3rd time around), but to no avail. This is frustrating because I cannot get my time, effort, or money back.I recently purchased the Blueprint to Logic Games in the hopes that it helps me with this important part of the test. Im hoping for order, structure, and a system that is presented in a manner that makes sense. I hope that I am able to switch to new methods easily as I have pretty much learned the methods in this book.

I can solve every logic game I've come across with ease after learning the methods taught in this book. The author's writing style is funny but I found this to be garrulous and distracting. That being said, the instruction and methods for solving logic games were excellent, easy to follow, and provided real results.

A lot of people told me the logic games section was the easiest once you figured out how to do them. Well I wasn't figuring anything out with any of the other systems I was using (Kaplan, Logic Games Bible). This book and this system was the most clear, and most helpful that I found. This book honestly changed everything for me, after I applied it and starting seeing correct answers my confidence went through the roof and my score went way up. If you're taking the LSAT you are going to read a lot of books about the test, the only advice I can give is that this book needs to be one of them.

If you need help with logic games this book is pretty good, definitely helped me. Author has a fun writing style. The introduction and insights on the LSAT give a refreshing perspective.

I've tried numerous lsat prep books from kaplan to princeton review and none of them come close! This book tells you literally everything you need to know to be prepared and attack the logic games on the lsat. Before this book I was scoring in the low 150s, after this book, I scored a 164 on my lsat!

This book is awesome! It shows you how to do everything in games... and do it right.... not kidding. It breaks everything down and is better than any other LSAT book I've come accross.

E.B White never disappoints. This is such an endearing book that communicates hard work, differences, and perseverance in such a creative way. This is a family read aloud for us, and my ten and five year old boys both really enjoy it.

This is the first chapter book that we completed for our homeschool read aloud! It was easy for me to read, and my 7 year old son was able to narrate it well. I love Sam Beaver's character and his appreciation for nature, living things, and journaling. He's a great role model for children. I'm glad that there was a happy ending and we were able to celebrate this as our first big chapter book that we completed.

Excellent natural history, teaching of human-animal behavior, and vocabulary. The story is intriguing and absorbing, good "chapter" book to keep children and parents coming back for more. Worked great for home schooling to study the set up of books and progression of a story. Many characters to interact and keep everyone's attention.

This audio version is narrated by the author and there is always something magical about listening to an author read their own work. Also, a very skilled trumpeter plays at appropriate times throughout the story. This makes a marvelous story even more spectacular. This audio version is a treasure. My son and I really enjoyed listening to it together.

I read this book when I was a kid and loved it. My cousin's son like's books about animals and I was really happy to find a copy like the one I had read that has some pictures scattered through the book to guide the imagination.

I'm a third grade teacher and I read this book to my students every year and every year it is their favorite. The story is so far out there and so imaginative that the reader can't help but get hooked. I love it!There are two illustrated versions of this book but this one is definitely the nicer one. The Trumpet of the Swan turned out to be another big hit for my family and I to share together. You know you have a big hit with my kids when they will do whatever you ask of them just so you will sit there and read the next chapter!!TOTS is told from a number of different perspectives. It starts off from the perspective of Sam Beaver, a young boy from Montana on vacation with his father in the Canadian Wilderness. Sam is an introspective young man. He likes to explore and think by himself, he worries about his future, and he keeps a journal where he asks himself questions to ponder every night before he goes to sleep. My 8-year-old Noah was quite taken with that idea and I am getting a journal book of his own to write down his thoughts and make little pictures to keep. Sam is also brave and patient. His patience pays off when one day the Mother Swan and her Cob allow their new cygnets to meet him. And that is how Sam meets Lois, the little swan without a voice. In a very tender moment little Lois, who has no voice, pulls Sam's shoe lace as a way to say hello. The imagination of my young sons were so inspired with what it would take to have a wild bird like Lois come that close to them. We can't even get the stray cats in our neighborhood to stand still long enough for a pat on the head!!The Cob and his wife have come to Canada for the purpose of raising a family. The first couple of chapters are dedicated to the challenges of building a nest and hatching the young cygnets. This is my favorite part of the book! The cob, is a master orator! He never says in anything in 5 words when 50 will do much better! He is arrogant, verbose, flamboyant and charming. He cracked us all up more than once!But the central character in the book is Lois the swan, a trumpeter swan without a voice! As it turns out this is a major birth defect for this young swan if he ever hopes to communicate with his fellow swans, but particularly if he ever hopes to woo and court a female trumpeter swan. Lois sets out on his own to learn how to communicate and with the help of Sam Beaver, he learns to read and write! With his trusty chalkboard and pencil he certainly can communicate with people. But swans cannot read. My children were mortified at the illustration of Lois swimming around with the sign saying "I love you" trying to woo the swan of his dreams, Serena. Love even makes swans surrender some of their dignity I guess.Thanks to bold and brave actions by the cob, Lois does get a voice through a regular musical trumpet! This series of events sets on on a path that leads him to Ontario, Boston, Philadelphia and then eventually through the American South andthen back up to Montana.For geography, tracking Lois's adventures on the map and learning about each of these places can make for interesting lessons.
