From School Library Journal

Gr 3–6—Astronomy comes to life in this activity book of science labs. Astronomy educator and professional Nichols has used her 20-plus years of experience to pen a fun, educational compilation of simple astronomy labs for children. It begins by helping children develop background knowledge in observational skills, angles, and directions before it increases in complexity. The content is well organized, and each lab layout is consistent with headings and photographs in addition to enrichment opportunities. Time constraints, materials, setup, and safety cautions precede instructions, followed by a "The Science Behind the Fun" blurb explaining the activity for students who may be less familiar with the subjects involved. Especially valuable are images that illustrate each step in the instructions. The projects are divided into units, such as "Size and Scale" and "Light, Motion, and Gravity," making it easy to follow and locate relevant materials to aid or accompany classroom learning. A comprehensive list of additional resources is provided. VERDICT A creative way to offer hands-on learning for science educators, parents, or students interested in astronomy.—Doneanne Soult, Westampton Middle School, NJ

This book is beautifully organized and the experiments are great. The author does a great job of connecting experiments with the science, experiments with other experiments (building on the knowledge), and inspiring creative thinking about how the child could extend the experiment with their own flavor or twists. My kids have had fun with other experiments, but this takes things to a different level and really inspires critical thinking and investigation of the natural world around us. It starts from the beginning with a helpful guide on creating your own science journal and encourages constant note taking and recording the data all the way through. I look forward to doing all of these experiments and extending through the creative enrichments.

Book is interesting and has good color to it. Grandson had me order it for him. He loves reading it.

My niece (7y.o.) is very interested in science and LOVES doing experiments. Astronomy Lab is a great fit for her. She was engaged in the experiments, and the explanations for what is happening and why were easy for her (and me) to understand. The book is written to be fun, not like a textbook, and it was really enjoyable to spend time together learning (though it seemed it was really just fun). I would highly recommend this book as a great way to get kids and teens involved in, and more curious about, our world.

Very do-able experiences that provide illustrations for somewhat abstract concepts. Help your child grasp a variety of topics with these clearly written procedures. The 6 units covered include: Observing, Scope It Out (focus, telescopes, etc.), Size & Scale, Light/Motion/Gravity, Exploring Our Solar System, Seeing Stars. Each section includes "The Science Behind the Fun" offering thorough explanations and additional information for parents to share with their younger scientists. A "Creative Enrichment" note also includes ideas and tips for successful experiences.

Love this activity book! Most of the activities require regular household supplies so no special shopping trips required. They are simple to put together, explained in an easy-to-understand way, and include good safety and set-up tips. The activities are fun for families to do together, but older children can do many on their own. The "The Science Behind the Fun" section adds interest and background for adults and older children, while also connecting the activities to others in the book. A great book for kids interested in exploring their world...and other worlds!

The author does a good job of explaining the WHYs of astronomy and the practical HOWs of observing and exploring it. Each experiment is layed out well and easy for both parents and kids to set up and execute. They get to learn while doing which is the best form of instruction. This is a great book to introduce children to what ultimately will be our civilization's future...the exploration of space.

This will be a great resource for the science fair. It gives great ideas for projects. This book is going to the grandkids.

Great holiday gift idea! If you're looking for a fun science activity book for your 8+ year old, this is a great one! They can learn about astronomy using everyday materials from around the house. My 9 year old thought it was really cool.
