Feathers: Not Just for Flying, by Melissa Stewart Sarah S. Brannen

From School Library Journal

Gr 1–4—Depicting birds from around the United States as well as South America, India, Africa, and Antarctica, Stewart illuminates the various functions of feathers. Presented in a scrapbook format with images and text that appear to be taped, stapled, or pinned to the pages, the book explains that feathers can provide sun protection, assist in carrying nest materials, or attract a mate with sound or color. All of these functions are subtly compared to everyday objects with which young readers will be familiar, such as backhoes and forklifts or umbrellas and sleds. Brannen's captivating, lifelike illustrations bring each bird's feathers to life. An author's note explains Stewart's main sources. With its simple text and captivating art, this title could be featured in a group storytime or in a unit on birds.—Meaghan Darling, Plainsboro Public Library, NJ

From Booklist

Feathers are deceptively simple marvels of adaptation, providing not just locomotion for birds, but also protection, warmth, decoration, and comfort. This book celebrates the amazing versatility of these easily recognizable objects, which young readers might find right in their own backyards. Vividly rendered watercolor illustrations of feathers in life-sized scale complement the straightforward text that describes 16 species of birds and the unexpected functions of their feathers. Common birds, such as jays, cardinals, penguins, and swans, share pages with more exotic species, like the rosy-faced lovebird of Namibia and a type of sandgrouse found in the Gobi Desert. Stewart describes how chicks suck on the wet feathers of their parents to quench their thirst and how males of some species can play a type of high-pitched, squeaky love song by shaking their wings to attract female mates. Part science journal, part read-along nonfiction, Feathers succeeds in what such science books for young readers should strive to do: help young minds spot the extraordinary in the seemingly mundane. Grades 1-3. --Erin Anderson

This is a beautiful natural history guide that should delight children and open their eyes to the many varied marvels that feathers accomplish for birds. Melissa Stewart has researched birds of many kinds all over the world and selected a number of them - some familiar, some not -- whose feathers may be used for different purposes: Providing warmth, protection from the sun, allowing them to float or dive in water, attracting a mate, even to dig a cave for their eggs--and, of course, to fly. For each bird she chooses a human tool with the same function to compare with the bird's. Sarah Branen's illustrations are absolutely marvelous: Each bird is shown in its full view and behavior, And the featured feather from each bird is painted in its full natural size and detail. Any child who reads this book will not fail to look at birds with a whole set of new ideas how it lives and why it lives the way it does.

Another beautifully done book. It does not help in identifying feathers as well as I'd hoped, but that was my fault for not reading the review carefully. I am not disappointed in the quality at all..

love it. so much about feathers i never knew. many more functions than i ever learned. feather help birds go up, go down, give water to young, dive deep, etc, etc. altho i'd now like a collection of specimens, there is also caution that sometimes feathers are appropriated illegally which probably endangers birds.

This book does a very nice job explaining the different structures and functions of feathers. It's beautifully illustrated and very informative, yet written for elementary students. It helps explain how adaptations help different types of birds, making a Big Picture connection for readers.

Wonderful book for all ages. Very informative and beautiful. Perfect for those of us including more nature in our classrooms.

The author and artist worked together nicely. The pictures and text match. This book has a great story and very detailed pictures to help explain the story along with creating a clearer understanding of the text. Will be using this text as a mentoring text when working on my non-fiction unit.

Beautiful illustrations and thought-provoking text, linking the role of feathers on birds to humans' needs. Deserves all the awards it has won.

Wonderful book! We just finished a bird study. This book was a great addition.
