She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband and daughter. Mika Song grew up in Manila, Philippines, and Honolulu, Hawaii before moving to New York to study at Pratt Institute. She worked in children's educational animation before devoting herself to writing and illustrating children's books. She lives in New York City with her husband and daughter. I ordered this book after receiving a breast cancer diagnosis at the age of 31. I wanted something to help us start the conversation with our almost 4 year old daughter, and this book is perfect! It touches on treatment types (surgery, chemo, and radiation), hair loss, mommy feeling tired and sick and possibly sad, but the main theme is very positive and empowering. It goes through all the things cancer hates, so those are the things we need to do lots of to fight cancer (kisses, hugs, laughter, compliments, etc). We have a list of all those things on our fridge while I continue my fight (I'm still going through chemo and have surgery and radiation ahead of me). Our 4 year old has been pumped to be my sidekick and help her cancer fighting superhero mom fight cancer since we first read this book to her. I'm so thankful for this book!
It takes a master craftsman - or, should I say woman - to not only write about such a delicate topic, but to write about it so eloquently and down to earth that children are able to grasp a gentle understanding of what's happening in the world around them. Talking with children about what's happening to their loved ones isn't easy, and Cancer Hates Kisses helps to lighten that load. I recently sent this book to a friend struggling with how to talk with her children about their father's cancer. She hadn't quite figured out how to explain why Daddy was so sick, but this helped them all to feel a little more in control. I love that this book portrays the mother, not as weak with cancer, but as a Cancer Fighting Superhero. I love that this book shows kids that they don't have to sit on the sidelines; they can kiss and dance and fight to help push the cancer away. And mostly, I love that the author found the silver lining in her own diagnosis to help others.
I have 3 small children and this book was such a lifesaver for us during treatment. So many children’s books on a parent coping with cancer can be scary or over a child’s head with issues they aren’t fully ready to grasp. This was a light, fun but yet very important and poignant book for our family. Although I just finished treatment, my youngest daughter still likes to read it becuase it means we get to snuggle and act out the “POW-POW†parts and laugh. And that is the best medicine for us all:).
Even my 12 year old loved it and it gave me a new outlook about myself as I fight through this. I am a super hero and I will beat this with the love and kisses from my family.
This is a beautiful, positive book that celebrates the healing power of love. I'm not a cancer survivor, but I took care of my father as he was battling cancer, so this story really resonates with me. It would be perfect to have read to the grandchildren who were also going through this battle with him. Something as simple as a hug or a kiss or laughter are little things that bring both the person fighting cancer and the caregivers comfort. I bought a copy for myself and I also brought it to my OB/Gyn's office to share with them. My doctor and nursing staff were thrilled to have this resource and plan to purchase the book for their waiting room! Will be buying a second copy to have in case I need to give it to someone.
As a young mom recently diagnosed with breast cancer, how my family and specifically my children (ages 6,4,and 1) would be affected has been my biggest worry. Cancer Hates Kisses, is a beautiful book with a powerful message! I bought a copy for my mom, who was diagnosed with cancer nine months ago. My mom is now cancer-free, but is still dealing with the ongoing turmoil of being in remission (such as the side effects of medications, radiation sickness, never ending doctors appointments, etc.). My mom had tears in her eyes while reading this book, and it truly meant the world to her. She now keeps the book on her nightstand, as a reminder that she's a warrior and a superhero!

We are a family impacted by cancer, although not breast cancer, and we still read this book to our daughter.
