The Black Campus Movement: Black Students and the Racial Reconstitution of Higher Education, 1965-1972 (Contemporary Black History)

Review

'Rogers has written a powerful account of the role of black student movements in US higher education from the mid-1960s to the early 1970s. The most impressive aspect of Rogers's work is his prodigious archival research. This is an important study. Highly recommended.' - Choice'Overall, The Black Campus Movement is notable for its thorough research and fresh historical analysis. The work breaks new and important ground by providing insights into trends and patterns of Black student activism across geography, institutional types, and time. The Black Campus Movement is the first work to compile such an inclusive account of actions nationwide. Therefore, this text is invaluable for students and researchers of the 1960s, the Black power movement, and Black student protest.'  - Journal of Black Studies

This book is chock full of fascinating information on the Black Campus Movement, which Rogers documents nationally. The extent of his research gives me confidence in citing from this book in my own work. However, the presentation of materials is quite circular with the same event being described over and over, which makes it quite confusing. For example at one point I thought hundreds of black students were being killed and then I read that only 13 were and that I had been reading the same story in different contexts. Also I felt that his four theories of discrimination detracted from, rather than adding to, the book's message, which is that black students played a tremendous role in transforming academia. A good book that needed a good editor.

As someone who wrote thier master's thesis on the Black Studies Movement, i can tell you now....BUY THIS BOOK. It is well researched and written. The author does an excellent job of contextualizing the LONG Black student Movement. From the abolitionist period to New Negro movement to 1930 and 40's labor radicalism this book has it all. i highly recommend this Book to anyone learning more about the Black student movement. A great contribution and needed work.

This book was incredibly informative and well written. It was truly eye opening to learn about the Black Campus Movement and all the work that was done both during and before the movement. I was very impressed with how Dr. Rogers was able to tell such a rich story, infused with well thought out theory (which was understandable to me despite the fact that I am not part of the academy). I would recommend this book to all - scholars of students/campus activism, African American studies, and American history in general; as well as others who are just interested in knowing the story of how colleges and universities in our country have evolved. A truly great read!

This book is the bible for student activist who are interested in organizing students of color. It will give you ideas for outreach, direct actions etc. Many books try to lead you into reformist, lobbying tactics that have been historically ineffective, but this book will get you to meet your goals! I had the honor of having the author of this book as my professor; he is one of the most knowledgeable scholars around. Don't think twice about it, if your an organizer you need this book.

I did not know a lot about subject matter so I learned a lot. The book was very well written and was well researched. Great read for anyone who enjoys history.
