The scope of this book is overwhelming. It is a comprehensive guide to personal development. It goes beyond Hardwiring Happiness to show you more specifically how to apply the principles of positive neuroplasticity to different aspects of personal development.If I had to choose one outstanding aspect of the book, it would be how it teaches you to grow beyond victimhood and martyrdom. In psychotherapy and ACA circles, which I have been a part of for many years, there is a proclivity to focus on and enable a victimhood mindset. In the Buddhist spiritual communities I have been a part of for many years, I have felt the opposite pitfall -- that the teaching to "open your heart to everyone" can enable martyrdom. Rick, as usual, holds the complexity in this book, that includes both poles, and a balancing of the various necessary perspectives. His broad-mindedness aims very high -- helping yourself while helping others, never leaving anyone out of your heart, or finding how to bring them back into your heart, while at the same time keeping yourself safe.I have learned from him more than anyone what post-traumatic growth is and how to practice it. The victim mindset feels unsatisfying to me. He offers practices to move beyond that, from many angles. Practicing focusing on the gifts and fullness of any given moment rather than the deficits (this has eased my suffering over time). Practicing considering upstream causes, that resulted in another person's actions toward you (or a culture's actions, etc.). How what comes at you is often not personal or about you. How one needs to discern and self-protect and assert oneself, but one of the best odds strategies for doing that is to help others feel safe. How one can learn to be autonomous or not "in lockstep" with others' actions, so that one can respond with unilateral virtue rather than react impulsively. How to meet the moment "feeling already full" and therefore not be so pulled to and fro by others. There's a strong, complex section on forgiveness.One of my issues is binge eating disorder, and I am having some successes with pausing during meals to notice "how full I am already" -- just with my sense doors -- what my eyes, ears, nose, and kinesthetic sense are taking in -- much fullness there. Or, when I want to eat more after I've had my fill, I redirect my focus to recalling all the delicious food I have already eaten for the day, I'm "already full." This book addresses where you place your focus and how you can work with the brain's various inaccurate biases.In his weekly sitting group, Hanson relates the principles of this book to the 4 Noble Truths (freedom from suffering) and the practice of cultivation (like the 4 Heavenly Abodes) in Buddhism. This book offers highly innovative and accessible ways to practice with craving and not craving, discontentment and contentment. How to focus on, and take in, positive states, to wire them into your brain over time, and make passing states become lasting traits.He is a very succinct writer, and I agree with the reviewer who suggested that if you unpacked all the neuroscience, clinical psychology, and research behind the principles in this book, it would be 1200 pages long. This is a dense and hearty read. Also like another reviewer, I'm finding myself re-reading short sections associated with my daily practice on any given day.This is the book version of Rick Hanson's 12-month, online "Foundations of Well-Being" course, which I took last year, and also highly recommend, for the same reasons.I don't experience redundancy in his books. They each have a separate theme and purpose. This one is my favorite.

This is one of the most useful books I have ever read. I am a retired psychotherapist with 30 years of experience working with clients with trauma. I wish I had had this book to offer as a resource. And even now I see many ideas that I know I can use in my personal life to increase the positives. I am truly grateful for this book and the gentle, loving spirit that runs through every chapter. I think it would be a great gift for every senior who is graduating and beginning to figure out their own lives.

I teach classes for stress and anger management and I got this book to help me practice what I preach as well as add more insight to what I teach. I like how he provides a real world example of each and breaks down each concept so it’s easy to understand.
