Well, I bought this book as a preparation for the MCSD exams. It is a nice book but the author wrote a lot of redundant sentences in the exercises for example stating the same exact instruction on each exercise which doesn't make any sense. Another thing with the book is the errata I found plenty of it, e.g page 128, 129 in the sample code forgetting to declare the variables, also in page 372 having two different names for the same call back function in JavaScript AJAX example.But I gave it three stars because I like it, I'm still reading it and I've gained some nice knowledge so far
If you're an experienced .NET developer, but new to HTML5, JavaScript and CSS this book provides the perfect introduction to those topics. The author explains each topic with simple coding examples and then builds on the examples to explain more complicated material. There is a lot of code in this book - I loved that. I ran most of the examples in Visual Studio and didn't have any issues. I am very glad the author used the test driven development approach because this is a solid approach used to build and design solutions, by writing tests first.
I cleared the 70-480 exam this week and this book has been very helpful. The material covered was relevant to the exam and the practice exercises were very good. I learnt a lot about CSS3 and JavaScript objects especially. And all the HTML5 features were covered, though not in depth, but enough for the examination point of view. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone taking the exam, or even for one who wants to find out what the buzz about HTML5 is all about.

I haven't gotten very far into it yet but I've wasted a ton of time trying to get everything to match the tutorial.I am a professional C# developer and run VS 2015 premium on Win7 Professional. I have a personal laptop running Windows 10.So far, the book's exercises focus on creating store apps and examining Javascript projects in VS2012 Web Express. Well, those project templates are only available on Windows 8. It's been a frustrating waste of time trying to get a machine configured to match the book.I'll forge ahead using what I have, but not having the project templates shown in the book will slows things down, as I now have to find a roughly equivalent template in VS2015. I also wasted a good bit of time installing VS2012 Web Express on my Windows 10 and getting it to work, only to discover the templates used in the book aren't available in Windows 10, either.
good book
I've been a developer for 3 years, but very little exposure to client-side programming. I always had difficulty with CSS and JavaScript. I primarily used this book as my study material and studied for 2 months about 4 hours a day. I passed the 70-480 exam on my first attempt with a score of 812. NOTE: there are some topics on the exam that aren't covered in the book such as, Flex grid, mobile gestures. This book provides really good tutorials and progressively builds on topics. I strongly recommend this book for anyone looking to pass the 70-480 exam.4 stars instead of 5, because I think the book needs updated to cover a couple missing topics that are on the exam.
I used this book and Microsoft's virtual academy to prepare for my 70-480 and score a 910/1000. This book is littered with great examples and code snippets. Although, I wish the material was less about TDD and more about JavaScript real-world use cases and implications.
