My brother and I are collaborating on a graphic novel. He is writing it and I'm illustrating it. He bought this book and I ordered a copy on my own so that we'd be on the same page. I was pleasantly surprised and highly recommend this book. It is geared towards the writer but is also good for those writing and drawing their own project. I found the book so engaging that it was hard to put it down, when's the last time you honestly felt that way about something you were reading? The author gives plenty of examples to illustrate his points throughout the book. It was a real eye opener for me and I would highly recommend this book for anyone considering working in the comics field, and not just writers either.

I bought this book simply looking for examples of comic script format but got a good general reference book instead. Don't get me wrong, there are tons of examples, way more than I anticipated but this is really a solid textbook and I would suggest it to anyone interested in comic writing.

I feel like a turtle trying to get to the finish line. But let me explain. I am not a writer. I have created my comics on an iPad. I enjoy it and I feel that I could improve with some help. I am only about 44% into this book. But I have to say that although I feel like a turtle because I just can't get to the juicy parts, the author provides many good tips for writing comics. I wish that there were more comics writers who would write about the craft - we really need them to help us. I find that many comics writers put their own work out there in order to sell rather than to help others. I can understand that because I know that it's difficult to make a living writing comics. Not everybody enjoys reading comics. Most people enjoy reading novels. But here is an author who wants to share his secrets for writing comics and who does it well. I have dozens of sample books on my kindle for iPad. But I'm glad that I own this one!

I have a weakness for the SCAD books published by Watson-Guptill, they are usually beautifully laid out with a lot of useful information. This one is no exception. The writing is clear, concise and scholarly without being overly academic or dry. This book will help you structure your story and create the script in a technically correct format. I dabble in comic writing in my spare time and this book has already saved me time and headaches finessing my own story.

A lot of concise information on scripting, writing, and pitching comics. It has a lot of good advise about crafting your comic and setting it up while covering pitfalls new writers make. Being able to look at comic scripts with notes of what is working and why and vise versa was good because that is never something anyone just sees from reading comics. Something, though, while I was reading kept making me feel that the information was too quick, that there was more to say on stuff yet it was a decently long book so I'm not sure what could have been missed. Also, this is just personal feelings but, I don't like the word "definitive" in the subtitle because no writing book ever has all the information you need which even the author said to keep working on and learning. Yet, this is a book I will be referencing as I work on my first comic script and would recommend to those interested in learning the craft.

I started writing my own comic book and realized there was a lot I didn't know. I saw this book and it had good reviews and it looked to have exactly what I needed.I am so happy I purchased this! I learned things I'd have never thought about on my own. Things about presentation and how to use organize illustrations to highlight story. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in writing a comic.

Just what I needed to hear. Have been round and round with standard writing as an end in itself, but this opened up a whole new way of looking at writing in collaboration with an artist. Very clear and usable no matter what you're writing toward.

Purchased it for a class and it was very helpful. I often felt it might have been handy to have more examples on how to draw out a character...my drawing is pretty crappy and I'm hopeful for some sort of miracle, hah!!!

From School Library Journal

Gr 3–6—Astronomy comes to life in this activity book of science labs. Astronomy educator and professional Nichols has used her 20-plus years of experience to pen a fun, educational compilation of simple astronomy labs for children. It begins by helping children develop background knowledge in observational skills, angles, and directions before it increases in complexity. The content is well organized, and each lab layout is consistent with headings and photographs in addition to enrichment opportunities. Time constraints, materials, setup, and safety cautions precede instructions, followed by a "The Science Behind the Fun" blurb explaining the activity for students who may be less familiar with the subjects involved. Especially valuable are images that illustrate each step in the instructions. The projects are divided into units, such as "Size and Scale" and "Light, Motion, and Gravity," making it easy to follow and locate relevant materials to aid or accompany classroom learning. A comprehensive list of additional resources is provided. VERDICT A creative way to offer hands-on learning for science educators, parents, or students interested in astronomy.—Doneanne Soult, Westampton Middle School, NJ

This book is beautifully organized and the experiments are great. The author does a great job of connecting experiments with the science, experiments with other experiments (building on the knowledge), and inspiring creative thinking about how the child could extend the experiment with their own flavor or twists. My kids have had fun with other experiments, but this takes things to a different level and really inspires critical thinking and investigation of the natural world around us. It starts from the beginning with a helpful guide on creating your own science journal and encourages constant note taking and recording the data all the way through. I look forward to doing all of these experiments and extending through the creative enrichments.

Book is interesting and has good color to it. Grandson had me order it for him. He loves reading it.

My niece (7y.o.) is very interested in science and LOVES doing experiments. Astronomy Lab is a great fit for her. She was engaged in the experiments, and the explanations for what is happening and why were easy for her (and me) to understand. The book is written to be fun, not like a textbook, and it was really enjoyable to spend time together learning (though it seemed it was really just fun). I would highly recommend this book as a great way to get kids and teens involved in, and more curious about, our world.

Very do-able experiences that provide illustrations for somewhat abstract concepts. Help your child grasp a variety of topics with these clearly written procedures. The 6 units covered include: Observing, Scope It Out (focus, telescopes, etc.), Size & Scale, Light/Motion/Gravity, Exploring Our Solar System, Seeing Stars. Each section includes "The Science Behind the Fun" offering thorough explanations and additional information for parents to share with their younger scientists. A "Creative Enrichment" note also includes ideas and tips for successful experiences.

Love this activity book! Most of the activities require regular household supplies so no special shopping trips required. They are simple to put together, explained in an easy-to-understand way, and include good safety and set-up tips. The activities are fun for families to do together, but older children can do many on their own. The "The Science Behind the Fun" section adds interest and background for adults and older children, while also connecting the activities to others in the book. A great book for kids interested in exploring their world...and other worlds!

The author does a good job of explaining the WHYs of astronomy and the practical HOWs of observing and exploring it. Each experiment is layed out well and easy for both parents and kids to set up and execute. They get to learn while doing which is the best form of instruction. This is a great book to introduce children to what ultimately will be our civilization's future...the exploration of space.

This will be a great resource for the science fair. It gives great ideas for projects. This book is going to the grandkids.

Great holiday gift idea! If you're looking for a fun science activity book for your 8+ year old, this is a great one! They can learn about astronomy using everyday materials from around the house. My 9 year old thought it was really cool.

Leaving Church: A Memoir of Faith, by Barbara Brown Taylor

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. A widely acclaimed preacher, Taylor draws on her homiletical skills in this finely crafted memoir with a simple plot: an Episcopal priest exhausts her inner resources, first in an urban church and then in a small country parish; she changes jobs, struggles and finds renewal. Such a synopsis, however, does not do justice to Taylor's literary style in this rich evocation of her lifelong love affair with God. "When I think of my first cathedral," she writes, "I am back in a field behind my parents' house in Kansas, with every stalk of prairie grass lit up from within." Drawn to the church, she compulsively overworks: "I had such a strong instinct for rescue that my breasts fairly leaked when I came across those in need of rescuing." Though she has found new employment, she realizes she is still a priest: "I miss being a lightning rod, conducting all that heat and light not only from heaven to earth but also from person to person." Current and former clergy will relate to her comical and sometimes touching descriptions of parish life, while memoir buffs will savor her journey as she identifies her core beliefs, sets boundaries and learns to relish her "blessed swath" of the world. From Booklist

Episcopal priest Taylor, a respected and beloved preacher, ended a 20-year career when, after much reflection, she left the church. She had expected to spend the rest of her life writing sermons and leading worship. Instead, she now teaches full time at a college in Georgia. With its three indicatively titled sections--"Finding," "Losing," "Keeping"--Leaving Church aims to explain her compulsion to leave the familiar behind. When she was first ordained and for years thereafter, she felt certain about the fundamentals of her own faith and what it meant to be Christian. But she slowly realized that she was conflicted, internally and with the church, in large part because of church-inclusiveness controversies, including gay and lesbian issues. She laments that while ostensibly protecting the integrity of scripture and church doctrine, people can trample the rights of others. She discovered that change isn't easy. Sometimes, even getting dressed in the morning seems an insurmountable challenge. Ultimately, Taylor's is a luminous portrait of faith not lost but questioned, refound, and regained. So grateful to find a voice of experience who walked the very path that I am currently hiking along, especially with regards to how I should be serving the Divine Presence and following the leading of the Holy Spirit's soft voice. I thought, like Barbara, that the best way to do it would be with a collar and pulpit of my own. I'm beginning to realize, and Taylor's words have confirmed for me, that being a professional servant is not the only way to serve, and that I should not rush the Spirit's message - she'll fill in more of the blanks when I'm ready for them. Until then, Taylor's book has been a great encouragement to continue on the spiritual divine goose chase called being a follower of Jesus Christ.

Barbara Brown Taylor is renowned as a preacher and teacher of religion. An ordained, episcopal priest, she is no longer in congregational ministry. Couldn't stand it, couldn't set limits, couldn't manage time, couldn't handle the stress, left her idyllic, rural church in a spectacular melt-down, found a more suitable niche teaching in a small college, and, it appears, is still searching. It was hard for her to be a "professional holy person," understandable. It is also hard for her not to be one, not to wear the distinctive regalia of a priest, not to have people look at her the way they look at clergy. But with her new freedom she is exploring other traditions, other types of community, and she's learning a lot.Episcopalians like to do spiritual autobiographies, and this is a great one. Of course, it doesn't have a beginning, middle, and conclusion. The journey keeps changing as she pursues it.Author Taylor writes lush, delightful, descriptive prose, evoking the rural environment, sights, sounds, smells, and ever-recurring conflicts. It's hard to put this book down. At the same time, it leaves too much unsaid. What really happened in the small country church that led to her abrupt resignation? She gives hints and allusions. One senses the parish was relieved to see her go. What is clear is that she is still searching, growing and learning. Should you go out and buy this book? It depends. If you're looking for definite answers, certainty, and biblical literalism, you won't like it. If you're comfortable with ambiguity, uncertainty, mystery, and inner conflict, this may be just the book you've been searching for. I certainly enjoyed it and recommend it. Reviewed by Louis N. Gruber.

This book is about Rev. Barbara Brown Taylor, and her search for herself and her identity. She begins her search as a young girl, eventually winding up in the Episcopal church, hoping desperately to find it in her vocation. She goes through a journey and a process that describes in great detail, what clergy burnout looks and feels like, and an identity crisis from ordination, to large church, to small church, to no church at all. Her restlessness stems from a lack of identity, and uncertainty. She eventually comes to the realization that her identity is not in what she does, but who she is at her core, and that in order to be able to give out, one must let God pour in and replenish on a daily basis.(Sabbath Rest) Unfortunately, she doesn't come to this epiphany until after she has completely given up her ministry, in my opinion, tragically. This book is a good lesson for anyone thinking about ordained ministry, or new to ordained ministry, of what NOT to do.

As a non-religious person I had assumed that the title inferred her "leaving church," but instead it is really about her leaving the priesthood of the church. However, she is an excellent writer and vividly describes her path leading to her decision to leave her position in the church. Looking forward to reading her followup to this book.

Barbara Taylor is an excellent writer and storyteller, and this autobiographical book is a compelling read. In this book, she writes about her own journey in faith and a life-changing decision: After twenty years of ordained ministry in a church position, Taylor resigned as rector of a relatively small Episcopal church in the North Georgia mountains to accept a position teaching religion at a small college nearby. The title "Leaving Church" is inaccurate, of course, because leaving ordained parish ministry is not the same as leaving church. Taylor is still an Episcopal priest, but even if she had resigned as a priest, she would still not necessarily have left church. The title stems from Taylor's resignation as a church rector, which surprised many people, and some apparently misunderstood her choice as really leaving church and/or losing her faith. In this book, Taylor explains the journey that led to her change in direction, providing an overview of her experience of ordained ministry and her transition out of church employment. Overall, she regards the decision to leave as spiritually liberating.Unfortunately, in my opinion, Taylor says too little about the actual decision to leave, other than emphasizing that she was tired and depressed. Although Taylor emphasized how hard she worked, so much so that it's almost exhausting to read about it, her decision to resign as rector of a church never seems adequately explained. From the viewpoint of many -- particularly those engaged in ordained ministry -- she has lived a charmed and even enviable life. First, after an apparently easy ordination process, she immediately received a position at a large and wealthy multi-staff church in central Atlanta, working with a popular rector. Then she was called as a rector of a charming church in exactly the area she and her husband wanted to live - the kind of location that people retire to because it's so beautiful. Taylor appears to have been financially comfortable throughout her ministry, and the couple were able to build a dream house on 100 beautiful acres in the mountains (with three streams on their property!) In the meantime, she was developing a widespread reputation as an outstanding preacher while authoring a number of popular books. What's not to like about this life? Sounds ideal, right?Apparently the author didn't like it, or at least the part about being rector of a parish, because she resigned. Exhaustion and symptoms of depression appear to have played a major role, as well as conflict in a church split over the issue of homosexuality. However, little time is spent discussing the decision to resign and even less on the reaction of the church members. Some of this may have been unavoidable, because of concerns about confidentiality and washing dirty linen in public. Taylor mentions that she had committed to stay 10 years when she accepted the position and left after 5 1/2, but other than that, says little about breaking that agreement. Additionally, she mentions only in passing that her recently hired assistant had to resign when she did (it's the rule). She hints that some in the church were unhappy with her (perhaps because she was spread too thin?) Certainly, one wonders about the wisdom of her initial commitment: 10 years is a long time to commit to. I wish she had felt free to tell more about that part of her story and spent less time describing finding God in the beauty of nature. I get it. Nature is lovely. The mountains are lovely - it's easier to find God there than in a church hall of angry people. Life in the church can be as messy as any barnyard, and that no doubt contributed to her decision, but she barely mentioned it. It was frustrating when she skipped quickly over her farewell party but spent pages on birds. It seems likely, also, that much of the author's exhaustion came from her own very high standards and successful outside endeavors. Taylor barely mentions her increasingly busy schedule filled with engagements outside her own church, as her reputation as preacher and author grew. She was no doubt traveling frequently while living in a remote area, accessible only by mountain roads. Additionally, Taylor's many publications during this period would by itself be sufficient work for most people! She says virtually nothing about these activities but instead describes the demands of providing pastoral care. It's amazing she managed to do all that she did for as long as she did without completely burning out. This book would be great for use by a book club, particularly those in a church setting, as it raises some provocative questions. I wonder if the author will find that even after "leaving church," she will continue to find herself over-scheduled, with more demands on her than most people could manage. I hope not, because she's definitely gifted as both an author and preacher.

Overall this book is great! We have a kindergartener, and she loves this book. Many great examples of how/what the right choices are. The only odd part of the book is about keeping secrets: one of the captions has a little girl saying to her friend "my parents are getting a divorce, please don't tell anyone". Just seems a bit out of place with the rest of the book. We change the verbiage when we read this page, as divorce isn't a topic we feel we need to talk about with our preschool/school age children, especially about it being a "secret". The illustrations are great, lots of visual details and examples that my kids love. Other than the random "divorce" sentence, this book is great.

Overall I think it's an alright book and will be keeping it. The main issues I have are with the brief, comic-like parts of the book where characters show an example of what the author is explaining.- A girl mentions that a boy is her boyfriend which seems inappropriate for a book geared at children- A girl mentions that her parents are getting divorced, and wants it to be a secret. I'm on the fence about this one, because it could be a good lesson and is probably something that happens a lot, but seems a little intense.- In an example of how not to be a friend, someone calls someone else a Stupidosaurus, which you may not want introduced into your kids' vocabulary. It wasn't a particularly fun read, more informative, but surprisingly held my five year old's attention, and he seemed to take away some good info, so still giving it 4 stars.

This has been a great book for my 3 year old son. He started his first year of preschool this year and sharing, taking turns, and playing nicely has been bit of a problem for him! We sit down and read this book often to remind him "how to be a good friend"! I feel that he understands what's going on in the book and has seemed to pick up on good behaviors from this book also! They have pictures and examples on ways to be a "good" friend. We read each picture and then I ask him questions about the pictures and we discuss what's the right and wrong thing. It has also been helpful between him and his little brothers. All I need to do is remind him about this book and things seem to go a little smoother!

This book is not for everybody and not for any age.I was bit disappointed with negative reviews about this book who spoil it for older kids parents. This book is dealing with attitudes of older 5 6 and 7 years old and younger kids should NOTeven be exposed to that because they indeed make pick up some from those.Older kids however can really use this book to express their problems with friends, their problem with their friend making and find solutions. My son has problems with a friend who tells all his boy scout friends what to do all the time.He could not fix this and we could not fix this, but one day he has him over and showed himthe book and that other boy red the one page about BOSSESand he blushed. He saw himself in it. It gave very clear examples of a child whowas bossing others on this page and he took it and got it.Yes, this is awesome and amazing book and helps to see what is good and what is bad when comes to friendship. There is tons books about bullies and how to deal with them but this book is a simple visualguide to situations among school age kids in K to 2 and how to navigate in that when you are that age. It is book for kids not for parents and kids really GET IT.There are good examples to follow for those who need them and bad to reflect on themfor bad behaving kids and for good kids to help to see how and what to say and what to do.What not to love?It is very affordable book, one Starbucks coffee really, no risk to me and I think it was so much wisdom and so much learned from it. Nothing to loose all to gain.Again, DO NOT buy for younger kids no matter how advance readers and smarts they arebecause this is the same problem as with those smart pants ending send to Kindy one year earlierand then being socially inadequate for most situations. Being smart and advanced is one think, fit socially another. therefore do not expose younger kids to those problems, just as you should not send younger kid early to Kindy :)

My 4 year old son's neuropsychologist highly recommended it as a great way to teach him about social norms so that he can build some good friendships instead of turning all the kids off with his boisterous and sometimes overbearing reactions (and affinity for pushing and chasing) Well, both of my kids (my youngest is 1.5) absolutely ADORE this book! They have wanted to read it every single day since it arrived. My son seems to be taking some of the lessons to heart, as he will bring up ways to be good friend or how not to be a friend randomly throughout the day. Our first playdate since getting this book also went swimmingly! There are a couple of more mature themes mentioned in this book- divorce being one of them. Not that I personally think it is an inappropriate topic, but if you have a child that you don't think is ready to discuss something like that, it's something to keep in mind. Though the beauty of reading to small children typically too young for stuff like that is- they can't read! So if you skip over a part, they never even know! (I always skip the part where the mom commits a little B&E and then cradles her sleeping adult son in that-book-that-shall-not-be-named because, creepy. And both kids are none the wiser) So yeah, this book is great, especially if you kiddo needs a little nudge about how to be good friend material. I'm not sure why, but small children tend to take a book's word for it more than if mom or dad tells them themselves... Worth every penny!

Great book, it covers all important sides of being a friend and even bullies and bosses. I wish I had it as a child.

Great, a bit too long for one sitting. Otherwise it gives good examples on what to do and what not to do. This is good for conversation starters and reminders of what options they have in different real life situation.

I've read a lot of books on mental toughness lately. First off, most of them are written for athletes, and though I hit the gym twice a day every day, I'm not technically an athlete. Second, most books on leadership don't give you a lot of detail. Divine doesn't write in platitudes and ideals. He delivers actionable information. The challenge: there are lots of acronyms to memorize in this book. Divine hails from the US Armed Forces (Navy SEAL Commander, Retired), so the love of TLAs is in high effect. But in the end, like all good things, you learn a bit easier because you remember them longer (DIRECT and PROP and SMACC are just things I do now every day). The trick: there's a trick to this book. I almost don't want to tell you. He wants your mind and spirit to work just as hard as anything else. There's tons in here on meditation and on what can typically be considered spirituality. Only, it's written with far less crystals and fussy foo foo language and it's written like the kind of stuff you need to get your brain and soul as tight as your body for the work ahead. The best: Divine gives you so many ways to take action, with a really good progression around it, that this book will DEFINITELY improve your mindset, your efforts, your intentions, and your output. If you do the work. But then, that's the same with anything.I've read a LOT of books on the subject matter covered by Mark Divine in this book but this one stands out above the others. Just as a point of fact, I've purchased the book three times so far, and will likely give out more to people over time. It's a must read. I've been blathering about it far too much.Get on this.

Commander Divine's tools that he developed in his life to succeed at elite levels at all times, including under intense pressure, have proven very useful to me in my life. I have given many copies of this book to others, both at work and in my personal life. I highly recommend this book and suggest that readers really try what he suggests, because it does work.As an example, I have challenged a number of people at work to try the morning 'ritual' for two weeks and have not once had someone not say it made a big impact on their day. Great stuff.

Really enjoyed it. Mark Divine is obviously a master of physical ability and mental control, but what impressed me the most is his focus on balance and promoting being well-rounded. This is not a book about pushing your way through life; but guiding your own path and in relation to others, dealing with your past and emotional s*!t, realizing how much more you are capable of than you realize, and includes the spiritual side too. Recommended especially for those of you who are looking to find direction and motivation in their lives.

Don't think for a minute this book is only about Navy SEALS. It is about a way of thinking, how to think effectively and achieve your goals in a focused and determined manner, build intuition, deal with adversity and do it all with much less stress. What is taught applies to SEALS, executives, athletes, and well everyone who wants to do more than just accept what life throws your way. Coach Divine teaches you how to take back control of your life and drive it rather than just be a passenger. I've read plenty of self-help books and this is seriously a cut above. Throw the rest out, they are now obsolete. I'm getting everyone on my team at work a copy of this book.

This book is full of very practical applications of leadership that incorporate physical, spiritual, emotional, and physical dimensions. For me, I really enjoyed learning about personal and organizational leadership using Navy Seals lingo and examples but I could see how for some that might be challenging. All said and done I'm impressed with this book and I believe this a good read along with other books that talk about business, leadership, fitness, willpower, etc.

I have read tons and tons of self-help books and this is by far one of the best. Aside from Richard Mackowicz's "Unleash The Warrior Within" which is also written by fellow seal Mack, this is one of the best personal development books you can spend money on.I strongly suggest anyone looking to accomplish their goals, beat depression, or any type of life challenge give this book a try! The chapter on creating a Mind Gym for visualization and goal setting alone is worth the price of admission. I can't think of another tool in my arsenal now that has helped me more then that one.Not to mention all of the other gems sprinkled throughout the book. Mark is no nonsense and no joke, but never talks down to his audience. He relates to you and helps guide you the way he was guided himself.Get this book if you are trying to accomplish goals and are experiencing setbacks. You will not be disappointed!

Great book! Really got me inspired to take action. Great tools for life! I will be highly recommending this book to a lottt of people! I love that it has a lot of calls to action, it gets you into actually putting the books theories to work WHILE you're reading. It is written in a way that it can apply to any "type" of person from a stay at home mom, to a business entrepreneur or aspiring navy seal. Its not all "fru fru" like some self help type books. I think my husband would actually read this and not be at risk of loosing his eyes as they roll in the back of his head :)

Wow! Not just some motivation-filled jargon, but an outstanding guide/playbook for life. No matter who you are or where you are in life there's more...plenty more. Need to get your stuff together or win an Olympic Gold 🏅... maybe something in between? It's ALL in here. Make the commitment to yourself and Never Quit! Semper Fi

I first read this book years ago, when it was presented to me by a literary friend. It's continued to provide insights, inspiration and entertainment. I've given it as a gift from time to time, to word & poetry loving friends.

Donald Hall writes about great poets and what they were like and his interactions with them, beautifully. A terrific writer and memoirist (I am not a fan of modern poetry, or even particularly of Hall's poems, but his prose is wonderful, readable, challenging intellectually and emotionally, spare and honest and great fun)If you like writers with great command of voice, and fascinating things to say, this, and String too short be Saved and Life Work are not to be missed.

The fact that this book is out of print is one of the great travesties in American publishing. Donal Hall is perhaps the last living connection we have to the golden era of early 20th century poetry. Here you will find firsthand accounts of his contact with giants like TS Eliot, Dylan Thomas, Ezra Pound, Robert Frost, and Yvor Winters.Hall's prose is so delightfully engaging, and these profiles go far beyond literary namedropping. In fact, [Remembering Poets] should be required reading for any graduate or post-graduate English scholar. Of all of this writer's many accomplishments, this book certainly ranks near the top.

This was a delightful, far-ranging book. DH is a wonderful companion, describing his encounters with giants of 20th Century English literature. We are fortunate to have his insights.
