Privacy is a hot topic in the news of late. This book goes right to the heart of this issue. The writing is excellent. Julia Angwin speaks from and describes her own experiences with all aspects of the subject. She places her story in the context of her life and her own family. I appreciate this personal touch and the relationship to real life. Too often non-fiction books of this sort present a logical and scholarly analysis of the problem that is difficult to relate to one's own life. This book does not do that; it is relevant.I am a technically savvy person only to an average degree. But I could tell from her discussion that the author is not seriously techie about any of the subjects she discussed. Advanced dissertations on the topics in the book was not what I was looking for when I bought the book, and if that is what you want, this is not the book for you. However, if you want to understand how privacy in your life has been impacted by government and industry, then this book is a must read.

Julia Angwin's Dragnet Nation is a thoroughly researched, ambitious effort to expose nearly every threat to privacy posed by the very technology by which many of us choose to shop, communicate, work and entertain ourselves. In that sense, it serves as a good starting point for those who are just learning about these topics. By indiscriminately bundling those surveillance techniques employed by the government and private sector that pose significant risks to our civil liberties with low level nuisances into a hodgepodge she collectively labels a "dragnet," though, we learn perhaps less than we should about what matters most while wading through what may seem like petty concerns.She begins well enough with a broad survey of all of the ways we can be tracked and our privacy compromised by technology, some more alarming than others. She follows with a history of how they developed from simpler technologies into their current state. By chapter three we see her becoming increasingly foreboding, discussing the East German Stasi's methods and using them as a touchstone to determine how concerned we should or should not be about various activities undertaken by government or the private sector.After these opening chapters, the book turns away from journalism and toward memoir, detailing Angwin's attempt to remove herself from the dragnet. In some cases she is more successful than others. She ultimately realizes there's not much of a developed market in privacy technology, as many of her technological tools turn out to be clumsy, not worth the effort to properly implement, or even downright failures as she illustrates very well in her discussion of companies that offer to disconnect you from the many Internet databases for a fee.Dragnet Nation is at its best when illustrating how law enforcement's keystone cops handing of online chatters can lead us to alter our lives in a way inconsistent with a free society, as in the case of Yassir Affifi or Gulet Mohamed. Her journalism bringing these stories to light is a great example of the sort of reporting we need to keep our government honest. By comparison fretting about how companies might lower her purchasing willpower by targeting discounts at her in vulnerable moments seems comically out of place in terms of its social impact. Sometimes readers will cringe about what sounds like very real threats to their liberty but wonder why they're really supposed to care about others.Dragnet Nation suffers from its failure to consider the government's side of these issues. She takes for granted that privacy is an unquestioned good, never seriously considering whether the government's limited resources might explain its intrusive methodologies. Ultimately, though, Dragnet Nation's biggest failing is that it never establishes what true privacy is and why it really matters. In the last chapter, she offers some tests to use in evaluating when a threat to privacy may be of concern, but her thoughts are left underdeveloped and comes too late to help the reader evaluate whether the many threats Angwin identifies and against which she tried to protect herself are valid. A more robust consideration of such issues up front would have provided her reader with a better guide to understanding what is at stake when dealing with these issues.

This book was not quite what I was expecting, but in the end it turned out to be a readable account of the author's personal exploration of data tracking and privacy, with societal implications emerging from that experience. While I was anticipating a more comprehensive treatment of the actual "dragnet" and all of its players, what we instead are treated to is the author's attempt to tighten up on her own personal privacy, and all of the frustrations in that effort. The author - as a professional reporter - obviously has a good contact list and indeed she consults with a number of well-known privacy experts in her endeavor, as well as experimenting with a variety privacy enhancement tools recommended to her by these various experts. In the end, readers will have a good account of the frustrations of ensuring personal online privacy, and also be treated to the author's reportage about why the online privacy landscape is so difficult, and what might be done to correct it.

This book may seem to be a little over the top, but it also addresses subjects like web privacy.You don't have to look very hard to find yourself tracked by internet advertisers. The sobering part of the book is how the government can eavesdrop on a number of devices. Cell phones, laptops, home computers are all possible targets.I wouldn't go to the lengths the author did for privacy, but I did find some of her advice helpful. Disconnect works and I did find more tracking than I expected on my web browser.Reading this book for me was a sobering experience.

Flocks is an amazing visual journey through all the angst of growing up, but somehow finding our way....L. Nichols has an uncanny ability to translate emotions to his drawings, making that reason enough to read Flocks.The book had a nice rhythm that reflects life. Sometimes life is a quagmire that you have to gather yourself to break out of, and sometimes life hits you at the rapid fire pace and you can catch the wave or tumble around in the wash.The book left me with a hopeful feeling for the resiliency of people, and the importance of friends and community, and motivation to check in with all my friends and reminisce.

I don't think I've read anything before that so nicely combined the themes of:- needing to get away from a restrictive community to figure out how to live a good life- needing the strength and support from that community to learn and achieveLife isn't simple, it's complicated. This book is a quick read and helps you understand how one person navigated life's complexity.

Logan’s creativity and genius shines through in Flocks. I read it within an hour and came away with a “wow” moment. The art is highly impressive and depicts his journey very thoroughly. Well done Logan.

Nichols was born in Louisiana (some time in the mid-to-late-1970s, if the rad TMNT reference is any indication!) and assigned female (“Laura”) at birth. Raised in a conservative Southern Baptist community, L. always felt different; an outcast, a freak, a sinner.Throughout his childhood and teen years, L. tried to suppress his attraction to girls – and was further confounded by the occasional crushes he developed on boys. While he enjoyed some parts of the church experience – the emphasis on faith, the sense of fellowship, and the feeling that there are things bigger than oneself – his church’s virulent homophobia and adherence to rigid gender roles alienated L. and led to isolation, depression, and self-harm.But whereas L.’s community failed him on one front, it succeeded on another: despite his being labeled “female,” L.’s family and teachers encouraged him to pursue his love of science and technology, culminating in a Master’s degree from the MIT Media Lab. It was during his college years that L. pinpointed the reason for the animosity he felt toward his body, and decided to transition.FLOCKS is L.’s memoir, told in graphic novel format. The vehicle through which L. chooses to tell his story perfectly encapsulates the many contradictions in his life: while STEM majors aren’t typically considered artsy or creative, L. is indeed a talented artist. His sad little rag doll depiction of himself is at once whimsical and rather heartbreaking (doubly so when we witness stuffing fall out of self-inflicted cuts on his legs). Given all he’s been through, L.’s upbeat, optimistic attitude is downright uplifting. (And I typically consider myself an Oscar the Grouch type, so that’s quite a compliment coming from my neck of the dump.)While the main thrust of the story is L.’s burgeoning sexuality and exploration of his gender identity, he tackles a number of other serious topics as well: his parents’ acrimonious divorce; the pressure of choosing a major and settling on a career path, post-graduation; polyamory; eating disorders; self-harm; depression; binge drinking; an appreciation of nature and the natural world; and the impact of community and in-group/out-group identity on one’s sense of self.It’s an engaging, beautiful story, in both form and content. There’s a little bit of repetition of themes and ideas early on (and not between chapters, i.e. to string them together, but within the same chapters), which does detract from the story. Even so, it’s a must-read, and not just because it’s more or less a one of a kind story, at least at this point in time. (Dear publishers, please give us more of this! Kay thanks bye.)

What I found to be the standout of this graphic novel was the author's repetition of showing us their interpretation of the unseen feelings they experienced through life. Every story is interesting and entertaining. One of my most beloved elements of the MHI series are the dashes of humor even when the monsters are enormous and doom seems inevitable. Many of these stories continue that tradition brilliantly. One thing I can count on in Ms. Phillips’s books: strong, admirable characters. The women are loving and intelligent, with inner strength; the men each love their new-found mate (although that is expressed in a variety of ways), they’re protective, and, yes, possessive.Ella is diminutive, and underestimated by nearly everyone at first. It’s rewarding to watch her blossom under Karthajin’s care. I love her playful demeanor and the way Karthajin is able to relax from his stressful role as emperor.This is an exciting story, with significant danger from unanticipated sources - a page-turner! I know you won’t be disappointed!

I really liked this book though I'm not into anal sex so that was a page skipper for me. But still I can't wait for the next one to be released which I have already bought.

The story was very exciting. Always something going on with the characters. A lot of explicit sex, so if that makes you uncomfortable. Don't pick this book

Who wouldn't fall in love with Ella. She is adorable. I lover her innocent maturity. Great read and look forward to many more.

I absolutely loves this book! Ella is a new slave in the house of the Emperor Karthajin. Thought to be only a child, Ella was purchased by the slave master to prevent her from going to a brothel after seeing how meek and traumatised she looked and knowing what her future would be.After witnessing the murder of her original owners Ella falls completely mute. Upon a chance meeting with the emperor she finds she is drawn to him and begins to seek him out much to the exasperation of the kind slave master.When he feels he has noother choice, the emperor decides to take in Ella until he can figure out a more permamanet arrangement. He quickly grows feeling beyond affection for her which concerns him as he thinks she is only a child, but when he comes to find out she is actually a full grow woman and then his passion flairs. With patience and time she learns to regain her words and they both learn together what love can truly feel like.

I loved this book!!! Loved it!! Ella is a brave vibrant sassy character who may not talk in the beginning but she still gets what she wants. Her innocence is portrayed in a quiet but sweet way that makes her rather adorable. As far as Karthajin, he's a strong character who's self assured and confident but not overly arrogant in his position as a ruler. He wants so much to spare Ella from the harsher side of court life and is pleasantly surprised when she proves perfectly capable of standing up for herself. Their dynamic is fresh and sweet as he slowly introduces her to the sex and intimacy she craves. This book was fun and sassy. It had just enough intrigue and adventure to keep it from having any slow moments. I love the entire series, but this one is my favorite so far. I can't wait for the next one!!I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Although this is listed as book 5 each of the individual novels are about a different relationship and so they could technically be read as standalones. It’s a fairly short novel and is fast paced making it so that I wanted to sit and read the entire book, it’s a real page turner! The men are looking to find their chosen mate and the women are down to earth but still very intelligent. Love doesn’t seem to acknowledge rank or status and what the heart wants it wants! It’s a great story to read and can be explicit at times. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
