A Trick of the Light, the midpoint in Louis Penny’s creation of the person, Armand Gamache. You might say he is a fictional character, not a person. Ours is a free country, if you stay shut of the political correctness police, that is, and you can say what you want. For me, Monsieur Gamache may have been a character, but he has become a person. Some of him, I do not want to be, but some of that some, I, with high probability, am. Other parts of him I also am, and am happy to be so. Still other parts I would like to be. Some of that latter, despite my aspirations, will never come to pass.I confess to you my brothers and sisters, I read the first Gamache book, Still Life, at the recommendation of Number Three kid. Half way through the second chapter, I quit. The characters and settings seemed to come too fast and the pace was too slow. I couldn’t grab hold of the characters and settings and I wanted to say, “Make something happen already.” I remembered a literature course I had where the prof told us that we had to work a bit, sometimes, to unearth literary gems. I went back to Still Life and made it to chapter three before quitting a second time. Number Three has always been an avid reader and has recommended great books for me to read. I had never been disappointed with her recommendations before, so I picked up Still Life again. And plowed on beyond chapter 3. Behold, literary gem stones. And ore carts full of gem stones in subsequent installments of the Gamache series.I confess, further, that in one book, a later one, I got to page 400, and was still waiting for the Ah Ha, here it is. I’d begun to wonder if Ms. Penny had squeezed all the juice out of Armand that he had to give, when, Lo, my reading eyes discovered what they’d been (patiently) waiting for.So, Ms. Penny, I give you seventy stars for the fourteen Gamache books on the street. Please tell me that your fingers weren’t crossed behind your back when you promised to publish Kingdom of the Blind next month. And I sincerely hope, for my sake and yours, your pants didn’t catch fire when you made the promise.Till November then.

Penny's mysteries are not traditional classic mystery novels. She writes with a depth and nuance that is remarkable. Her mysteries are more about the human soul, profound questions and deep emotions. Having read almost all of her Gamache books, I feel like she just keeps getting better at her craft. She is gifted at creating a sense of place with her novels. Her love of Montreal, Quebec culture and the beautiful landscapes that about there shines through and provides a rich backdrop for this book and her others as well. Penny is also gifted in her ability to create characters who have depth and realism. This book is set in the idyllic, quiet town of Three Pines with many familiar characters that fans know well. The novel is set against the backdrop of the art world and its many players and the sensitivities, fear and greed that drive that world. Just like her prior books, this mystery is about finding the answers to big philosophical questions to find a killer. New readers and longtime fans will not be disappointed. This is one of her best written.

This is one of those books I kept thinking about for quite a while after I read it - it was almost a week before I picked up another book to read. Complex characters, each with his or her own problems in a tight-knit community that is too small to be on any maps. In the previous book Inspector Gamache and his second in command, Jean-Guy Beauvoir were shot and almost died. They were both sent to counseling when they recovered enough physically. Jean-Guy quit counseling too soon and is trying to take care of himself, but he's getting worse. He's not taking his pain pills the in the prescribed doses and his stomach is too upset to eat much so he's losing weight. In fact, Jean-Guy has become gaunt. He gets very little sleep, which is not at all good. I used to work in a hospital's sleep disorder center where I learned there that lack of sleep can affect you mentally. A lot of this book is focused on mental health.

The books in this series never disappoint. The authors ability to seamlessly overlap multiple stories in the telling of one never fails to astonish me. These are truly "page turners". I know that term gets thrown around slot but this book really was. I'm not overly qualified to properly critique these books some may say because i probably haven't read ALL the BIG mystery writers. But for what it's worth my two favorites are this series, if course the D.I. Thomas Lynly series by Elizabeth George. Unfortunately I'm all fought up in that series and am rapidly working my way through this one.Well i hope you give not only this book a chance but the whole series. You won't be disappointed.

A murder happens in a small Canadian village and the novel unfolds trying to discover the "whodunnit." The writing reminded me of Agatha Christie, complete with a big storm, flickering lights that go out, and a confession to the group. The problem for me is that I just don't buy it. It doesn't seem like modern policing, and since when do murderers actually confess to the group and their reasoning behind the violence? Good character development, with complex and wounded people, and their intertwined relationships. Too much repetition about art, light, shadows, and forgiveness. It was like being hammered over the head - very heavy handed.

Chiaroscuro, the contrast of light and dark in life as in art, is the essence of book 7 with its focus on alcoholism and addiction. Does the acceptance of ones reliance on a substance and sustained effort to change alter ones true self or only give the appearance of change? Can people’s personalities change for the better (and sometimes worse) or are they simply variations on the same theme? Is the light genuine? Set against the background of the art world and through the character of Gamache while trying to solve a murder, Penny probes these subjects as well as hope and forgiveness. I’m addicted to this series!
