Lets face two facts: 1) Kids in grades 7-12 do not like having to learn history(their loss, as they all realize when they are 30). 2) Schools in this Millenial world or newer have cut the hearts out of the schooling curriculums in lieu of teaching to "basic achievement" and "Standards for Graduation"(so called proficiency testing) that has to be repeated frequently that the "contact time" for students to get history, language, "the Humanities" has been axed in those curriculum cuts (the Nation will be the loser here...it's already showing). And teachers will take the wrap for the kids not leaning! (I'm a retired public school (history) teacher.) This book, and the others by author Nathan Hale (and yes, the story of secret agent/spy Nathan Hale is utilized in the text and background for each title in the growing series) please me to no end. They are written, aimed at a kid's reading level and makes the history being taught (yes, being taught) enjoyable to the adolescent reader (or any age reader, for that matter). Cartoon /comic style illustrations (very well rendered) in pen and ink draw the eye and the characters tell the (hi)story with no haughtiness that might be found in a dedicated history book of the same topic. It's good, because the readers are teaching themselves, and that sort of helps make up for the deficiencies in schools as described above. I've seen a few of these books, and really like them. They would easily make a great child's personal library collection. Some are worthy of adult collections! An example being the telling of the story of the WWII Doolittle Tokyo Air Raid. There are quite a few more, and I urge you to consider these books as gifts to any adolescent reader or adult with an interest in the subject matter of the book or history in general. My only gripe so far is with this particular title! The author/illustrator decided to tell the historical path of WWI using animals instead of humans...the animals are dressed as the warring soldiers and have human bodies, but with animal heads and paws, etc. That really wasn't necessary, and might even put off some more mature adolescent readers. Otherwise, a high recommendation from this old retired teacher guy!

My 10 year old son absolutely LOVED Donner Dinner Party, One Dead Spy, and Big Bad Ironclad, so I pre-ordered Treaties, Trenches, Mud and Blood. We've had it for two days, and he's reading it for the third time. Glad it comes in hardcover, because otherwise it would wear out too quickly!Having read Donner Dinner Party myself (to make sure it was appropriate for children - the topic certainly seemed questionable!), I can confirm that Hale does a great job of educating while entertaining. He keeps the story appropriate for kids without speaking down to them.My son is also reading the Eyewitness: World War I volume for more detail. I would recommend any of Nathan Hale's Hazardous Tales, but this is definitely my son's favorite to date. Keep them coming! Would love to see one about the war in Vietnam.

I bought my son the Hazardous Tales series for his 8th birthday, and we have both absolutely loved them. I'm learning nearly as much as he is. Prior to reading this book, my knowledge of WWI was embarrassingly spare, and now I feel like I at least have a grasp on the basics. This is the only one I've read so far that wasn't that funny, but when you consider the millions of people who died in WWI, it makes sense that there's not really a place for humor. I'm glad to know that my son will go into 3rd grade with a broader knowledge of American history than most adults, and I'm happy to finally be learning this stuff myself!

If only all history books made history this easy! Mr. Hale uses the graphic novel format to its maximum potential in this highly engrossing read. With clever humor, anthropomorphized animals representing their respective countries (bunnies!), and powerful imagery (without the gore prevalent in your run-of-the-mill graphic novel about war) we get a clear and concise basic understanding of the events that led up to, and that occurred during The Great War.

My 8yo son has read each of the NHHT books multiple times. He keeps one with him wherever he goes. They can have themes that may be shocking for some, but those opened good discussions for our family. For example, _The Underground Abductor_ exposes some atrocities of slavery that I wasn't aware of. Our kid asked questions, and we talked them out.If you have a kid who loves learning and humor and you can handle having discussions about hard stuff occasionally, then I highly recommend these books. We have loaned a couple to friends who don't love reading for pleasure, and they also LOVED these books.

When it comes to what my kids read, I really only care about one thing--if they were enthusiastic about reading it. Bonus points if the book gets reread or I get begged for other books by the author. Reading is a chore for my youngest child, but he loved the book so much that we are getting the rest of them for Yule gifts. I haven't read it, so I can't say if there are mistakes or bad grammar or attest to the quality of the illustrations, etc...but in the general scheme of things, those factors matter far less than enthusiastic reading.

I bought this for my 11yo homeschooled son who has developed a fascination with WW1 and 2. He loves to read in general, so I wasn't surprised when he quickly devoured the whole book on the day that it arrived. But then he read it again. And again. And again. And then my 9yo daughter, who is decidedly less interested in reading than her brother, asked me where it was. She's been reading it, and now my 7yo daughter appears to be engrossed by it. They all seem to be captivated by the author's use of animals to represent the different countries involved. I, myself, have not read the book yet but will probably do so soon since it has gotten my 3 oldest children so excited. I'll also be ordering the Donner Dinner Party book by the same author.
